X-Men 2 Carphone

thanks, only thing that could have had a little more definition to would of been the center part between the "X" . It could of been a little deeper on both sides. The parts are real light and rough feeling. But as you see with a little foil tape they look just fine. As far as the chrome dipping I do believe that they can tone it down to simulate aluminum. Once the other parts come in. I can start on the mock up for the case. I am going to try to make it look as much like the radio as I can. with a little twist. But I will post the rough designs as soon as I have them ready. But I am sue we can work out something when it comes time.

I agree with the depth of the X detail. When it scaled down it just wasnt as deep as it should have been but that will be fixed for the final casting:). The material will always come like that, its not really the best but it is th cheapest.. Now i just wish mine would hurry up and get here.

How large are you planning to make the case? I'm interested to see how it will look as a display piece.

Answer to your question, "How Big ?". Roughly 10" wide, 4 1/4" high, 6 1/2" deep sitting on 4 1/2" legs. Basically a car stereo on legs. Thought about putting the X logo on top. The case would be molded in black plastic. I found the liquid plastic from a company called smooth-on. I will make the rough pieces out of clay and making the molds out of silicone to pour the panels out of. I have ordered most of the electronics and mechanical parts but they are slow to arrive. If any one out there can get some good detail shots of the front face both out side and inside it would be of great help. Before I got the phone parts in the mail I had no Ideal how big it would be. It all depended on the scale you made the finish phone. I wanted the phone to fit like a glove. I had found that using a computer controlled servo to operate the turning of the phone would be the best approach. Back to the design board.

Here are some pics of the positive and negative molds for the top cove of the charging unit. I will be doing final castings out of a light weight black plastic. similar to what the plastic on cell phones. The top and sides are the easy parts. Its the bottom and the front that will take a little more work to complete.

I just think I found the right blue tooth to install in the phone. its small enough just have to change the ear piece so it will fit inside. Its inexpensive too, only about 6.00 us.

Hey, Don't know where everyone went. But still hard at work on the x-phone. Just got the rest of the parts in. And I think I found a compatible Bluetooth for it. Just got to relocate the mike, switch and battery for it. But not to big of a problem. I noticed the the upper and lower halves fit a little tight to the center and that it dose not close all the way. But it will work for a rough. Just thought I would point that out for the finish parts.

Still here, in spirit anyway:p, i've been up to my eyes with the past few wks

Damn thats one small kit!.. looks perfect. Put up some images of the full unit together when you get the chance so i can see how tight it is.

I looks like you're making loads of progress already. I'm looking forward to seeing how you get this thing together. Have you thought much about the sliding mechanism?

I like that chip, it's slightly bigger than the wristband Bluetooth one i saw but should work great!

Can i ask a questions about how you are going to extend the power button, on those it looks like it uses those tiny little rubber contacts to turn it on, I've always had trouble soldering anything to little metal contacts on the board correctly, what's a good way to tackle that?

cheers - Mauro

- a small solder tip
- solder with a flux middle helps
- a steady hand & patience

Looking good so far SYFY. Some good tips on the BT and heads up on the minor speed bumps. My bank acct is on a temp hiatus right now, but I should be ordering one in the next month or so. :)

as you see it will be quit nice. But the center part is a little high still. It wont let the upper and lower halves to close all the way.

To our new comers: the phone are still on the drawling board yet. And if have followed thus far there is a base unit that goes with this phone. It too is a work in progress. the Bluetooth parts will be a combination of two different Bluetooth devices. The second one has a smaller ear piece that will fit in easier. The switch will be part of the opening device which is still in the design stage. But progress will be updated as it is made.

I will be re-molding the parts in a colored plastic and black rubber side buttons. When they comeout of the molding process I will post photos of them.

Just like superdrool said, small tips and steady hands.

I removed the side buttons off the mold to remold them in rubber and add the release parts to them.

I've thought about snagging one of those micro stations a couple times, but can't justify it, until now. :lol They really are quite handy when doing small stuff. Like having a friend hold you're work for you...that you don't have to constantly tell them to hold still. :p

and they are inexpensive too, I got this one for 5$ at a discount tool store. The lighted magnifier glass is handy as well.

Sorry I have not been around lately, Had a lot of things come up. But had to stop work on phone until I finish my P.C. board developing tank and CNC table. I need them both in order to finish the phone. Also will be attending ITT Tech in June. This will help out greatly in future projects.

Man i know the feeling! I havent been on properly in ages!.. And even less time to work on this or any project:(.. have you had a chance to do anymore?

I will model up the phone with a tighter centre fit. If there are any more changes you would like to see just let me know.

great that will help a lot. I was looking at the photos of the phone. I noticed that there were small folding hinges between the center piece and the end pieces on both sides. Once I get my homemade CNC done. I will try to reproduce the hinges. I believe this will make it look closer to the photos. I will be starting ITT on Monday. This will help when designing the electronics. I think that painting the parts is the closest we will get. Unless you have found someone to plate the parts, or mold it out of metal. They are just to small for me to make a double mold for them. Still hard at work on the charging station. Will post updates as they come about.

I didnt see any hinges, but I have only had 480p screen grabs. Do you have some high res stills?? That would be very handy for finishing the design(at last!)

I actually started a new job as a design/project engineer so i have access to a lot of fun toys and resources:)..so anything is possible. I'm going to do a new split top and bottomn design with all the moving parts for the latching system.

Is there anyway you could send me speaker/bluetooth device dimensions? So i can incorporate it into the piece.(also wire thickness if u can). Im just going to go with a double latch spring mechanism.. but i'll make it so it can all be removed so another method can be used if you like.
