Re: Working on a DALEK. Finaly figured out the hemis

Looks pretty good for a budget hemi, is that a nite lite with draught excluder round the outside?

Try ProjectDalek. We have a lot of builders on all sorts of budgets.

What one person did to make his hemis was to use old vinyl LPs and a home brew vaccuform.

People have used lengths of plumbing pipes for the hemi surrounds.

As far as finish goes, the 'bondo' filer that sells here for $12 for a small tin in the auto stores sells for $18 for a gallon trade. Having a rough finish underneath is no problem, its more to key off.

Re: Working on a DALEK. Finaly figured out the hemis

For the hemis I found a clear craft ball that splits in two the exactly the right size 100mm dia, as for the ring around the edge I am using a truck seal these are quite cheap at $1.80 ea and the clear craft hemishere holds them into place. the seal is 110 x 90 x 12mm.

Utterly brilliant :lol I really enjoyed reading this post. Nice one.

Re: Working on a DALEK. Finaly figured out the hemis

But Murray, it's a budget project - those seals x 56 would equal three times Familyman's total spend so far! :)

I reckon the the rubber is the way to go. New eye looks way better by the way. :thumbsup

Actualy it is craft foam, I found (wait for it) a pair of halloween coconut bras at a dollar store, I thought they might come in handy (insert comment here.......) So what I did was lay a piece of craft foam over one and using a heat gun warmed up the foam then molded it, whole process took about 30 seconds. The seal is actualy foam floor mat, cut into thin strip and glued the ends together to make a ring. All in all the hemi took about 1 minute to make, all I have to do now is cut a circle of wood screw it to the dalek skirt and glue the hemi around it.
May also fill the foam hemi with something just so it doesnt get squashed.

As for the truck seals and craft balls.
I too have considered the craft balls, and yes for one or two it is cheap but I need what? 25 or so, and then 5o something truck seals that is way aboive what I can afford right now. Maybe once I start work (if I start work) on one for my home theatre room. But for a kids outside plaything nope, but as always I appreciate the ideas and suggestions.

And thanks about the eye looking better. Now next on the table is the head, this one is gonna be tough to figure out. Any ideas?....

Anogther update:
Finaly decided to work on the gun boxes a bit more. I didn't like how bad they looked. Here is a new Gun Box, not finished but looking way better then the ones I had already.
Oh and I have had a few PM's politely telling me that some of the detailing is not right and the whole thing doesn't look perfect. Let me just say, I am building this for FUN!, I am building this for my kids to enjoy. I know it isn't perfect, but I am not going for perfection, not on this one. And to date it has still cost mu way under $100.00 to build. SO I know it won't look perfect at that cost. But like I say it's for my kids and they love it.
