WIP: HPotter:POA Monster Book of Monsters!! FINISHED!

Re: WIP: HPotter:pOA Monster Book of Monsters!! Grrr!

Wow this is fantastic, so impressive - I cannot wait to see the finished product and find out what you are going to be working on in Dec/Jan!!

Re: WIP: HPotter:pOA Monster Book of Monsters!! Grrr!

On the 'hero' books the fur was crated by flocking them with a mixture of coloured flock of medium length. The flock was then smoothed down before the glue dried to give it a more natural look and to create the kind of realistic rhythm that hair growth has.

There's a real art to that I assure you.

All the hero books were cast in foam latex of course. The background ones were latex and two part foam If I remember correctly. Many of which were given away as gifts to certain executives.

Oohhhhh okay. Well, I'm DEFINATLY not doing that. Ugh! I ain't no hair stylist to be sure!

Great info though, thanks so much, and I love what you guys do at that effects house (have the Making of special with all you guys on the ol' DVR). Everything just looks so dang alive! Not an easy trick!

Re: WIP: HPotter:pOA Monster Book of Monsters!! Grrr!

Out of curiosity is soft foam different from what's inside the skelegro bottles?

What will the tentacles be made of? Will it be safe to add our own hair? Will the resin be a bit thicker on this one? I'm wanting to attempt to put hair on it myself but I wouldnt want to if any pressure would crack the skin.

The resin will border on rubber, and the interior will be like nerf. It'll be stiff, but also soft. The fun trick is, is that the soft sculpting/texture almost fools you for a minute, since the weight of your hand will collapse the 'skin' a bit.

Knowing now how the hair was done, I'm running far, far away from doing that.If you wanna tackle it, be my guest! :eek

Re: WIP: HPotter:pOA Monster Book of Monsters!! Grrr!

Sounds very interesting, looking forward to seeing updates!

Re: WIP: HPotter:pOA Monster Book of Monsters!! Grrr!

Getting the tounge and upper mouth completed. They're looking good. HOping to get the left side of the book done by week's end, and then onto finishing the top and right side. Pics coming once camera battery recharges!

Re: WIP: HPotter:pOA Monster Book of Monsters!! Grrr!

Here we go, some quick pics of how she/he's looking!

Tongue's done and in place, I'll be re-sculpting the pages to look bent around where the tongue is coming out of. Should look pretty neat. Topjaw is in place, but is not final yet. Lots of smoothing to do. Also have to add two sets of small teeth on either side. Tentacles are starting to get their suckers.

Hope you like!

Re: WIP: HPotter:pOA Monster Book of Monsters!! Grrr!

He/she's looking better every second :love just unbelievable :thumbsup

Re: WIP: HPotter:pOA Monster Book of Monsters!! Grrr!

Thanks! Silicone arrived today, as did the rest of the supplies!! I'll be finishing up the sculpt this weekend, give you guys a day for reviews/changes, and then off we go!

Re: WIP: HPotter:pOA Monster Book of Monsters!! Grrr!

There's a scene in the PoA when Harry is rubbing the spine of the book and there are "appendages" on the books spine. Will you be including those? Either way, this is amazing!

Re: WIP: HPotter:pOA Monster Book of Monsters!! Grrr!

Ya know, I was going to ask about those spines. If I sculpt them, they may end up looking like whipcream, but if I fur those spots on the book, won't it just look odd?

What you guys think?

Re: WIP: HPotter:pOA Monster Book of Monsters!! Grrr!

I agree with you on the fur...it would look weird for that to be the only part. And we don't want whip cream. Haha. I've seen a few versions and it's still a ferocious looking book either way.

Re: WIP: HPotter:pOA Monster Book of Monsters!! Grrr!

I agree, no whip cream please lol

Re: WIP: HPotter:pOA Monster Book of Monsters!! Grrr!

Working on it now, it doesn't look so bad. Pics tomorrow. Bottom is nearly done.

Re: WIP: HPotter:pOA Monster Book of Monsters!! Grrr!

I popped in the film last night to see the books in action for reminders, and the spines on the . . . uh . . . spine are fur, not points or horns. Thank you lordy! Some corrections were made, mostly to the 'Monster' text (still have to fix the 'o') and I opened up the mouth area to make the teeth a bit more of the focal point.

I went ahead and sculpted a nice looking mohawk down the back. I kinda like it, and can absolutly live with it, but I'd like a few more opinions.

I still think that clumps of fur would look cool too. I'll be sculpting a test in my spare time this week. What you see here isn't completely finalized, as I didn't want to commit fully to it. I think this is safely far enough away from the 'whip cream' look that had me worried. I sculpted the spine with different directions so you could stroke the side without getting poked. :)

The rest of the book is shaping up nicely, and I'm especially pleased that I got the pages to look like pages. I've also gotten the tongue completed and fit into its hole, and re-sculpted the pages around the tongue to look compressed.

I'm next going to focus on the bottom half, getting the right side finished (you can see tentacles now go all the way across the front) and getting the fur done on the spine. Once that's done, I'll flip him over and do the underside, then start casting that bottom in silicone. Once that's done, I can flip him back over, finish anything left over on the sides, get a few coats of silicone on that, then permanently attach the top to the sides and get the rest of the book cast.

The largest challenge will be sculpting the two large tentacles and the top jaw/teeth to mate smoothly and as perfectly as possible to the main book.
I'll most likey do that final step in Apoxie Sculpt, so that the final results can be permanent.

Enjoy the pics, and please let me know how the spine should be handled!!

Re: WIP: HPotter:pOA Monster Book of Monsters!! Grrr!

It's looking great! I really like the fur on the spine and the way you parted it...very realistic. Seems like with every new picture it comes a little more to life.

Re: WIP: HPotter:pOA Monster Book of Monsters!! Grrr!

Glad to see this thing evolve. I haven't checked the film to see what the spine looks like myself, but what you have could work; the clumps of fur idea could be interesting too....whichever aesthetically complements the rest of the book would be best I think.

Really love the way this is turning out. Great work on the sculpt and I am looking forward to the later stages!! So are you going to be painting all of these or is there an option to have it unpainted as well?

Re: WIP: HPotter:pOA Monster Book of Monsters!! Grrr!

I'll be painting everything. I'm only doing 25 of this though. At the price, I doubt I'll sell more than that. Either way, it's too cool of a thing to look at sitting here on the table. i should post a pic of a Coke can next to it so you guys can see just how big it is. I'm having enough fun, I'm slogging along at 1 in the morning watching HBO, finishing up the right side and adding the little teeth on the upper jaw. Fun!

Re: WIP: HPotter:pOA Monster Book of Monsters!! Grrr!

Very cool; this is an awesome project! It'll look amazing in a Potter book collection :D
