Will Smith decks Chris Rock at the Academy Awards

Sorry but IMO it was fake . I don’t mean like “oh we got you it was a joke “ I mean setup as in “we have no viewers and the show is gonna end after this year we need to do this to save the Oscars “ Watch you can see Chris he actually leans into the slap and does not move at all to help sell it . Will swings with such an over exaggerated straight arm slap like they practiced it over and over . Right at the point when he hits him they cut to a different angle I mean the timing Is cracker jack. The speech after was so fake it was laughable nobody can argue that . The Oscars used to have about the same viewers as the Super Bowl in the 80s last year 10 million and I find that hard to believe. Either way stick a fork in Hollywood.

We need to consider that it is a possibility.

In a few short years the academy went from somewhat respectful union (...) to irrelevant embarrassment - and the Oscars went from Super Bowl sized advertisement cash cow to one step closer toward full-on reality tv show. And yeah, 10M viewers last year (13M this year); that's Nielsen Ratings' voodoo mumbo jumbo numbers. I believe they threw in a few million in there.

The (new) producer this year is on record saying "My goal, ultimately, is to get eyeballs on the show”, which in HWood terms means "If it needs to be trashy to get higher ratings, then trash it'll be."

I have always liked Will. He genuinely seemed like a good guy. I could give a crap about their personal lives. I literally don’t judge. Everyone’s relationship is theirs and theirs alone so say what you want about that.
But this whole thing has made me sick. His apology yesterday means nothing in my mind. I doubt I will ever look at him the same.
If it was a woman his career would be over. He has had a decent career so maybe it is time he goes away. He needs to go to therapy and rethink his future.

I just think the awards are a joke now although cant say for sure if they were always bad and I only realized now or it has been getting worse over time. There have been terrible choices in the past (Shakespeare in love and Crash) but it has been going into movies I have never heard of for a good while now. This blatant checklisting to see if a movie fits the criteria to be best picture based on a checklist and not on merit is also not great (although I guess there has always been a checklist).

Alot of celebrities are coming out now over the slap and voicing their opinions. Some against Will for attacking a non-violent person, some praising him for "defending" his wife.

Honestly feel everyone is kind of an ass to varying degrees in the situation.
Chris Rock - making a targeted joke at someone for an illness and has gunned for Jada to be the butt of his joke in the past
Will Smith - going publicly violent, not immediately apologizing
Jada Smith - cheating with the "open" marriage
Didn’t Will also admit to GQ that he too, indulged during that “open” marriage?

Have the Academy Awards ever been relevant to anyone outside the film industry? Seriously though, what other televised awards ceremony are you aware of other than the Oscars and the Olympics? They don't broadcast regarding the Nobel Peace Prize or any other major awards that I know about.
There are the Grammys, the Golden Globes, MTV Music Video Awards (once upon a time), the Country Music Awards, People's Choice (maybe), and the Tonys (maybe).

I side with Chris in all this, I really do believe he had no idea about her condition. I myself had no idea either as I don't normally keep up to date with Jada news but also, I really only remember Jada from Scream 2, and in that movie she also had short hair. So I was under the impression this was nothing new...
