Will Smith decks Chris Rock at the Academy Awards

In the old west, Smith could have shot him and it would be a justifiable shooting. Just saying, not condoning. With so much violence everywhere, I sometimes think we have lost it as a civilized society.

If it was staged then they would have done it better.

There was no existing rift or buildup between Will & Chris beforehand.

The joke wasn't enough of a dig for the reaction that Will gave it.

Will was laughing one second and then charging the stage the next.

Chris wasn't emotionally prepared for the slap, never mind physically. Should he be acting amused? Angry? Swiping back with more insults? He spent several awkward beats just trying to figure out how he was feeling about it.

That whole thing was definitely not planned IMO.

That's not true at all. There were laws in the old west, and that would have been murder, same as today.

I wouldn't call him a thug, but rumors of Smith being a bully with good face and publicity have been around for years. I guess being married to that poor excuse for a human has worn his will to shine away. Funny how Denzel called it but Mr big moment thought he was saying that the speech was the "high moment" haha

I don't think Will Smith would have done that if the joke had been uttered by someone else than Chris Rock,
after Chris' potshots at Jada at the 2016 Oscars and Smith and Rock having known each other for years before.

Subjects in Comedy (Art/Free Speech, btw) is a thermometer of true Democracy! This thread could slip, real fast, into the actual zeitgeist our Western World is experiencing. I'll just say that Truth is stranger than fiction; but less popular.
I think that the whole affair could've been handled better, for both parties involved...but what is done is done; no need to cry over spilled milk...
I'm sure some genuine questions will be asked:
Is it right for anybody to always pick on someone (even if it's the truth?) and at what point does it become harassment?
Context is everything of course...

He got in one little fight and his mum got scared, she said ‘you can’t hit Chris rock just because your wife has no hair’

Brilliant. Waiting for the unofficial YouTube edit of this footage with the opening of "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air" in 3, 2, 1...

But on a serious note: I think many of us "get" what happened here, where a spouse feels offended and believes they are "protecting" their partner by lashing out physically. It was an impulsive, emotionally driven act. Will wasn't thinking clearly. In some respects there may a type of "chivalry" associated with that.

BUT...

1) Will Smith is an example to countless young men, having grown up in a violent home and yet broken through to become a successful rap artist, TV star, and Movie star. Especially in the minority communities, he should know better than top react to a VERBAL INSULT with violence. Chris Rock was not punching/kicking/hitting Jada PInkett, so Will was not "protecting" her in that regard. Sets a bad example that isolated verbal affronts should be dealt with physically.

2) In recent years, Will's role in their relationship seems to have been diminished, possibly been made to feel "less than a man" in his marriage. Lashing out like this does not make up for personal relationship problems you have with your wife.

3) Will Smith assumed that Jada needed "protecting," that she could not defend herself from a joke. Pretty sure she can take care of herself in this regard. Looks like he was trying to prove something to her in front of the world, almost like he's been waiting for the right moment to come along. I'm sure Jada wasn't thinking "Oh, my Hero! What a man!" after the incident. She was probably embarrassed beyond words.

4) As others here have said, It does raise the SERIOUS question of security at the venue. Heaven forbid, but what if Will had a knife or firearm? In the same moment of passion he seriously injures Chris Rock? I'm sure he went through security screening, I know. BTW, even just punching/slapping/striking/hitting someone on the face/head in a moment of anger can have serious consequences when the victim falls, strikes their head against the ground, etc.

5) Chris Rock has not pressed charges, yet. LAPD have said they will open an investigation if Chris decides to proceed.

6) So many accomplishes at the Oscars for women, minorities, advancements in VFX, music and editing, now all overshadowed by his action.

7) Let's not forget, the Academy Awards is the industry giving gold statues to itself. And in recent years has become more the pulpit for celebrities to preach to the masses about current social and political issues. It used to be fun... now it seems to be an ordeal to endure.

Do they check the celebrities for guns or knives when going to Oscars? Just saying, next year who knows what might happen, when someone gets angry...
