Will Smith decks Chris Rock at the Academy Awards

I'm just speculating wildly, but I have a sneaking suspicion that Jada what caught unaware that Will was going to do this. I just don't see her condoning this behavior and they very well might have had a strongly worded discussion behind closed doors.

Also, the fact that Chris isn't pressing charges just ups him up on class in my book. He took it, rolled with it and now Will comes off as a bully with a short temper out to show the world what a bad ass he is.

I don't think anyone has mentioned yet that initially Will Smith seemed to enjoy the joke until he saw Jada's reaction and then he switched.

I doubt it, his son was actually happy he did it, I doubt his wife would feel different.

Yeah apparently that's how grandpa did it too.

Will LAUGHED at the Joke... It's so pathetic. I've been eye rolling that whole family for years. This put them on Kardashian level.

“My father was violent, but he was also at every game, play, and recital. He was an alcoholic, but he was sober at every premiere of every one of my movies,”

“My father tormented me. And he was also one of the greatest men I’ve ever known,” Smith writes. “He was one of the greatest blessings of my life, and also one of my greatest sources of pain.”

They should revoke the award and charges should be pressed. If an average everyday usher at the event did what Smith did, he would have been arrested.

There are people who have Oscars and have committed way worse crimes that they've actually been convicted of and the Academy didn't revoke their awards. Harvey Weinstein for example. If they didn't do it for that POS, then they shouldn't start with Smith

Chris Rock hosting next year, opening the show in headgear and 12 oz. gloves would be hilarious.
Further hilarity would be Smith walking out on stage dressed as a heavy bag. The sketch writes itself.
Remember when the Oscars used to be fun? They need to start laughing at themselves again, then we will.

Yeah I had to react to getting punched in the face once like it was nothing… and it was just me smirking, joking… through black stars - then immediately went to the washroom and ran cold water over my face cuz damnnnnnn.

Chris did well. Bravo.

Will I lost respect for.

He could have had a hero moment. Took it backstage. Walked up and said something instead of punching him. He could have brought it up when he ended up winning.

But the reality is he’d been dragged for looking like a cuck while his wife had that affair, and this was hm trying to make up for it.

Bad move.

If jadas husband had been just a regular guy, and he got up and did that? He’d be immediately arrested

I watched that doc where he was trying to lose 20
Pounds and “write” his book. That guy is so out of touch with reality at this point.

I kind of agree.

Im an guessing that Will is under a lot of stress. Highest probability he is getting an oscar thanks to King Richard, the fact that his private life is public and his wife was cheating on him for a good year or so. Still inexcusable.

I do find it both funny and a sad state of the Academy Awards that Will Smith slapping Chris Rock is the highlight of the show. Before people cared what best movie was but given that its going to be another oscar-bait movie that no one watched.

A little off topic but I love Rebel Wilson's quip. "I thought his best performance over the past year was being OK with all his wife's boyfriends"

True. They shouldn't have their's anymore either. I honestly wasn't aware of Jada having Alopecia. I kind of understand Will Smith's reaction after finding that out, but I still don't think it was the right thing to go up and smack someone over it.

Anyway, I've spent a few too many moments of my life discussing this already, so I'm dropping out of taking part in general everywhere of discussing this. I've got my own problems :D

Well, the Academy does seem to go back and forth on that issue and they get criticized for it every time. If a really popular movie wins they get criticized for choosing that movie simply because it did really well at the box office. Then the next year they choose some artsy movie, people complain that they gave the Oscar to a movie that nobody watched. They lose either way.

Then to complicate things, they've now made it a requirement for the movie to be diverse so it's no longer good enough to be the most popular or the most artsy. You now have to not only have done extremely well at the box office or be a very artsy movie but you have to have a certain requisite amount of diversity in front and/or behind the camera too.

Have the Academy Awards ever been relevant to anyone outside the film industry? Seriously though, what other televised awards ceremony are you aware of other than the Oscars and the Olympics? They don't broadcast regarding the Nobel Peace Prize or any other major awards that I know about.

I just think the awards are a joke now although cant say for sure if they were always bad and I only realized now or it has been getting worse over time. There have been terrible choices in the past (Shakespeare in love and Crash) but it has been going into movies I have never heard of for a good while now. This blatant checklisting to see if a movie fits the criteria to be best picture based on a checklist and not on merit is also not great (although I guess there has always been a checklist).

Alot of celebrities are coming out now over the slap and voicing their opinions. Some against Will for attacking a non-violent person, some praising him for "defending" his wife.

Honestly feel everyone is kind of an ass to varying degrees in the situation.
Chris Rock - making a targeted joke at someone for an illness and has gunned for Jada to be the butt of his joke in the past
Will Smith - going publicly violent, not immediately apologizing
Jada Smith - cheating with the "open" marriage

There are alot of televised competitions and awards although alot has to do with national pride.

Olympics is a time honored tradition and basically another way for countries to flex (we have the superior people) so lots of nationalism there but thats true for any sport. Technically the Nobels have live broadcasts although I think its hard to catch. I guess singing competitions like Eurovision.

For a specific industry however, it is likely only film and television. You dont have broadcasts for the best accountant, teachers, or any other profession. I always assumed it was because the Awards was another form of advertising (this film is really good because the experts say it is. Check it out in theaters this weekend. This actor is great in this film, check it out). Its why alot of films have the number of Oscar nominations and what it won on its posters and advertising (at least in Japan. The first lines in the King Richard advertisement in Japan is this film is the one that will likely get Will Smith an Oscar).
