Will Smith decks Chris Rock at the Academy Awards

I side with Chris in all this, I really do believe he had no idea about her condition. I myself had no idea either as I don't normally keep up to date with Jada news but also, I really only remember Jada from Scream 2, and in that movie she also had short hair. So I was under the impression this was nothing new...

She's had varying hairstyles over the years, depending on the film. Hell, she even had more than shoulder length in the film she acted and directed in, The Human Contract (seeing she wrote the script and original wrote the role of Michael in mind for herself before she casted Paz Vega, it pretty much foreshadowed her informing Will of her auditory too).

A lot of people don't realize that the Academy is literally a private club, nothing more.
And once a year, for Motion Pictures, that private club gives away trophies, and make a big fuss about it.
It's as simple as that.

The shame is that within that club there's a lot of good stuff, but 90% of the nominees and winners we never see at the trophy giveaway show.

All the below-the-line people who work their asses off, putting in the long hours on location, dealing with impossible deadlines, trying to make their work the best it's ever been, have been gradually overshadowed by over-inflated egos who get to the podium and "don't know what to say" for 3 minutes, or try to lecture us small people about whatever they feel will make them look more virtuous.

[Some] actors have lost their minds about what they truly are (thanks to the swooning flock of followers), and the Academy has mutated into something less than it was originally intended (I'm self-censoring myself here) . And now they're trying to deal with the reality that the flock might not be as big as they were led to believe, and that unlike sheep, we're not into trash. And that leads to shows like what happened last Sunday.

I had the show on in the background for the first time in years, and the Will Smith thing wasn't the most cringe worthy thing that happened. Classless television was redefined last Sunday.

Now, when's the next trailer of _________________________ coming out so that we can nerd-out on that!! ;)

I feel no sympathy for Will or Jada. They were the ones who decided to publish a tell all book, which shared intimate details of their private lives and sordid ones at that. The second you make the decision to do something like that you invite commentary, whether it's warranted or not. You were literally banking on the "controversy" to sell your book, so you have to deal with the fallout and that means comedians poking you for it. Discretion and privacy are four letter words anymore. What makes it that much more egregious is the fact that now Smith is playing the victim after physically assaulting Rock for lobbing a softball joke at Jada and his peers defend him. I guess when you're at that level of fame you honestly believe you're untouchable.

Then again it wouldn't come as a shock if the whole thing was staged to make the show relevant to audiences again or to at least see a spike in the ratings. It's also a shame as you've pointed out Pepperbone that the real honors should be focused on the production crew, the people who never get any recognition for their hard work and who are all but invisible in the sea of credits most people skip after the movie is over. At the least the night should be about them.

The good news, for those who aren't already there, is that the rest of us are developing an unprofitable immunity against crap like this.

Whether staged or not; I and most simply do not care enough to feel anything about it - aside from having a little bit of guilty pleasure commenting about it here. One of the life mottos I adopted a decade ago was Care About Others As Much As They Care About You.

If it was staged and few people care, now question becomes how far will the industry go before it's too far? The Running Man?

Ron Conan > Absolutely.

I agree wholeheartedly. This doesn't affect me in any way personally other than having a few good laughs at their expense. Eventually the humor will get old and I'll move on. Seriously the meme community is having a field day with this thing. I can't help but be reminded of how disappointed Doc Brown and Marty were when they arrived in 2015 (our timeline) on Kimmel's live show.

I don't get why anyone would think this incident was fake. I mean, why would these two high profile, professional actors agree to do this?! For Chris, its just humiliating. For Wil, it will hurt his image in the public eye and possibly prevent him from getting future gigs. I get why people would POSSIBLY this this was staged for the sole purpose of bringing the masses back to watching the Oscars, but seriously, at the expense of two prominent actors reputation? What actor would agree to this just to save the Oscars? AND on the very night that potentially Wil could win the statue?

A very good documentary named "Good Hair", made several years ago, was discussing the propensity/culture of the black women, who at a very early age are trying to straighten their hair and, in the process, are damaging it so much over the years that they have to wear wigs for the rest of their life.
Name of the person who produced/helmed this documentary?...Chris Rocko_O:p!!

Also, for the people who think this was fake\staged or whatever, please explain how Chris Rock got the left side of his face to immediately start swelling up. You can see it when he's announcing the winner of the award he's presenting.

Him making contact doesn’t prove if it was real or fake IMO . It’s very common in films to take a slap .

Except no one was making a film. This was an award ceremony. What would Chris Rock have to gain by allowing himself to be battered on live tv in front of a worldwide audience? Then to have that clip replayed over and over again. To help the Oscars gather some buzz? You're out of your rabbit ass mind if you think that makes sense.
