Will Smith decks Chris Rock at the Academy Awards

I don't think anyone has mentioned yet that initially Will Smith seemed to enjoy the joke until he saw Jada's reaction and then he switched.

...and the audience's nervous response, they weren't sure if it was a joke/staged or real. They would ASSUME it was a joke at first, I'm sure. Just part of the show.

Talked to a friend that was backstage. Reports had to be made for insurance and production. Not staged. But one major issue that is being talked about is talent safety. The other side of it is how many people are talking about an awards show and how many now know what alopecia is.

Thank you! I was waiting for someone with first hand knowledge of the aftermath. I dont watch this drivel anymore, but could not avoid seeing the clip as it was on every news outlet. Of course the back story comes out with all the dirty laundry. Apparently Rock has made Jada jokes in the past and well.....she was openly sleeping with another guy (open marriage). So naturally his wife is a touchy subject.

[...] Especially in the minority communities, he should know better than top react to a VERBAL INSULT with violence. Chris Rock was not punching/kicking/hitting Jada PInkett, so Will was not "protecting" her in that regard.
[...] Heaven forbid, but what if Will had a knife or firearm? In the same moment of passion he seriously injures Chris Rock? I'm sure he went through security screening, I know.
It was a slap. Slaps are supposed to be felt, not to cause physical harm. Slaps are used to discipline children (not that I would agree with it). Let's not make this into something that it isn't.

Of course you are correct... yes, it was a slap. A childish, impetuous slap. Not the actions of a man who's been through a thing or two at age 52.
But Chris didn't know what was coming, since it appears it was NOT staged. Remember, Will trained as a fighter to play Ali, and he's pulled a Tom Cruise a time or two where he heavily invests physically and emotionally into his roles. And if Chris escalated the problem and shoved Will in the back while he walked to his seat, would that be acceptable? This is not two high school best buds facing off over the head cheerleader. This is a televised event seen by millions around the world. All attendees involved know that, and they are dressed accordingly.

But my main point is this: While Chris was not seriously hurt, and it was "only" a slap, Will still quickly got up on the stage, close enough to Chris to hit him. Physical contact. No one saw it coming, REGARDLESS of how minor the physical contact may have been. What is the level of security for things such as this?

And what if it was a no-name usher who walked up to Chris Rock on stage and did the same thing, and yelled "You don't talk about Jada Pinckett that way!" then walked off... would it be ANY different? Would the usher have been escorted out / charges pressed/arrested? Would the Security Team have been raked over the coals for allowing it to happen?

The person I feel really bad for is Chris Rock. Chris was doing what Chris does. Everyone knows what he typically talks about on stage. I can't imagine the embarrassment that Chris probably felt in that moment. In front of the world. And to make a recovery as quick as he did said a lot about his character and poise.
Will should be embarrassed for his behavior. When he was walking up there... how could his voice inside not be telling him what a terrible idea this was going to be?

He was missing the sage advice of Uncle Phil…

When I saw it my immediate thought was, that was staged. Something to draw viewers in and to bring the Awards into the discussions again and to boost the ratings for next year.

If it was staged then they would have done it better.
Will could just have pulled Chris' shirt open to expose his nipples. ;)

4) As others here have said, It does raise the SERIOUS question of security at the venue. Heaven forbid, but what if Will had a knife or firearm? In the same moment of passion he seriously injures Chris Rock? I'm sure he went through security screening, I know. BTW, even just punching/slapping/striking/hitting someone on the face/head in a moment of anger can have serious consequences when the victim falls, strikes their head against the ground, etc.
That is true. However, it would have been very difficult for him to leave his fists at the reception.

Kidding aside, this was a very sad moment. Now Will is in the news not for his movie or his acting skills but for beating a colleague. :(

I'm not sure how more security would have helped.

Yeah, they could have prevented Will from charging the stage at that moment. But then Will probably could have slapped Chris a few minutes later when he went on onstage to get an award. Or passing him backstage, etc.

It just isn't normal for this stuff to happen. These are two public figures who came to the event voluntarily and aren't known for being trouble (certainly not in grownup settings like this). The whole event is designed around having hundreds of famous people rubbing shoulders in a relaxed party setting. I'm sure there was plenty of security at the perimeter of the building keeping out the random public.

When Elon Musk goes into a boardroom and talks to stockholders, is there any security preventing them from slapping him? Is this an irresponsible lack of security? We can't police everyone every minute.

To those thinking this could've been staged, just look at the academy board of governors. No matter how low the show's ratings may be, these people are not interested in this kind of press. They're not young, edgy risk takers. They're old, out of touch suits.

I know we have all done stupid things out of emotion that was regretted a second later.
If Will had that second to really think about it before walking on stage, he would have been better to just yell something like, I would prefere you don't talk about my wife and her medical condition. Then it would be on Chris to try and smoothly move it on from there.
He handled the slap pretty good I think.

Yeah, this should have been handled WAYYYYYY different. Entirely should have been a sidebar conversation away from the public. I can't imagine a worse place for Wil Smith to have done this. And on the very night he gets an Oscar!

City Slickers:

"What's the worst day of your life and what's the best day of your life?"
"Same day."

Ohhh that's a great quote pull.

also, watching Will's doc... so much was about his dad and his temper.

Good job, Will. Dad would be proud.

And my friend with Alopecia is bending over backwards to support Will. Like Chris deserved it.

I find this funny as her stance is usually against toxic masculinity... but I guess it's cool if it fits your cause? So many alopecia people sticking up for Will. It's nuts.

I mean, I may have been all "WHAT YOU SAY ABOUT MY LADY!?" *smack!*... When I was TWENTY. But as a 45 year old I now know how to solve issues (or take jokes) without resorting to slapping.

Also this:

But according to my friend, a girl going bald and a guy are totally different.

Oh is it?

Tell me at age 19 when I started losing my hair. Yeah, I took it like a champ. No biggie....

(I didn't)
