Who is this "Sidkit" and why don't I own his Mal Reynolds pistol?

I haven't had the time to work one mine yet. :( Though, I've been think, that some people wanted a way to be able to remove the cartridge, but didn't now how they wanted to mount a magnet, or anything.

Well, I was thing, if you get some dummy (empty ) bullets (shells), you could take the bullet (the led part) out of the shell (or whatever you call the brass part), put a strong magnet inside, replace the bullet (led part), and mont that in your cartridge (magazine, whatever.). Then mount a piece of metal, or another magnet, up in the gun. (there is room.) If the magnet is strong enough, it should work just fine through the brass of the shell.

That way, when you take out your cartridge, all people will see is a bullet.

On the resin grips (while awaiting wood ones) has anyone tried or considered that stain they use for fiberglass front doors? My house has a door sheathed in fiberglass, and they used a stain made to simulate woodgrain on synthetics. It looks great and wears well. Everyone thinks it's real wood. Just a thought.

Hey is this thread dead? Does anyone have any idea what the story is with the wood grips for the SidKit? There has not been any posts in over a month. Is this project dead?

well im the guy that DONATED his resin grips to have them scanned.....
i havent heard from the guy in a few weeks, so im assuming its just a loss....... however i understand that hes a busy guy, so i dont know

Thanks for donating your grips, David - you definitely stepped up and took the bull by the horns on that one (hope you get them back).

I too am a little perplexed at the lack of progress on the wood grips. It seemed that there was just going to be a little readjustment in sizing and that would be that. However, I know from personal experience that a third party can keep you waiting.

I must say that the grips looked great, albeit a little small. I know there's a lot of folks who would like to see the project completed (and would happily pay to do so).

Just my 2 cents stating the obvious :)

Yeah, I've been holding off on finishing my Mal pistol until the wood grips were done. I was going to follow the "how to woodgrain" instructions I found online but would rather have real wood.

the woodgrips may never happen.

I have been told i am impatient.... but for something that was going to take "about two weeks" has been goign on for months...

right now my $600 brass plated mal gun doesnt have any grips...
this reminds me... i need to reorder some grips thru sid...

UPDATE on the wood grips....

The grip guy emailed me said hes been making many sets of grips, but they arnt turning out right, so hes sending them off to have them scanned elsewhere that will be more accurate size wise and will update me in a few weeks...

I May Be Able To Help Provide Wood Grips

The machinist who does alot of my prop and real gun work has some free time coming up due to the holidays. If anyone is interested, I can 3D scan a set of grips and the CNC machines can crank out duplicates in short order. This would have a short turnaround time. The 3D scanner, milling and CNC machines are all under one roof, under my control so everything could be accomplished in one place.

If there is any interest, let me know. I don't have a Sidkit pistol so I would need to borrow a set of the grips for less than one day, just need the set long enough to scan and make a digital template. They can be sent back the same day.

Potential questions include:

1. Type of wood
2. Add screwhole or do-it-yourself
3. Potential set count
4. Fair pricing

My intent would be to send out CNC machined sets of wood grips identical in specifications to the resin ones used as the master. The grips would be ready to finish. The screws holes can be predrilled using a drillpress, but each step adds to the end user's cost. Any variations need to be hand finished by the end user, all I can guarantee would be that the wood grips would spec the same as the masters.

LMK if this is of interest. If there is enough interest, I'll post in the J/Y. I do not have any intention of cutting into anybody's project in progress, so if there is already a "wood grip project" underway, my offer is humbly withdrawn.

Re: I May Be Able To Help Provide Wood Grips

Definitely interested! And I'd be willing to sacrifice my plastic grips temporarily.

To answer all of your questions that I'm able to:
1. Walnut is the screen-used wood.
2. I personally wouldn't mind drilling a hole myself - however, I would love it if it would be possible to CNC in a little divot or something just to let me know exactly where the hole SHOULD be.
3. Uhh...I'd buy one! I would guess, based on the previous possible runs, that you'd get at least 15-20 sets sold here.
4. I have no idea about this. $30? $40?

Re: I May Be Able To Help Provide Wood Grips

Im building a few of these sidkits for some of the guys here and Im sure that at least 3 or 4 of them would buy the grips as well. I was going to make them myself but if you can get them for about $30-40 a set them Id rather have you do them. I was going to do a couple sets by hand but its pretty time consuming.

Re: I May Be Able To Help Provide Wood Grips

I'd probably be interested in 1-2 sets. Pre-drilling is not a must... might even be wise to leave it to the buyer since the different Mal pistols around seem to differ slightly.

Walnut- definitely
Fair price- $40-50

Oh... and while we're on the subject of wood grips- grips for either a Denix LeMat (Jayne's Boo) and the Sideshow Samaritan would also be pretty good ideas...

Re: I May Be Able To Help Provide Wood Grips

I might be in depending on price. I think I would prefer pre-drilled grips, as I am pritty incompliant, but I guess I could do it if I absolutely had to, or if it would drive up the price too much. Though I agree, I would at lest need a mark of some kind to show were the whole should be.

I just hope I can get the crummy plastic grips off my kit now. (I got tired of waiting for wood so I went a head and used the plastic ones, and I had to use some glue, because they kept coming off. :( )

I would be interested if grips matched dimensions of resin grips -- I would prefer mine have hole pre-drilled -- my guess is if it matches resin grips, it should fit gun as the holes in the resin grips were not, to my knowledge, custom drilled, bit mass produced to fit ALL SidKit guns.
