Who are you!? I'm StarLord man!! WHO? Costume and props W.I.P! Final Jacket MODS

Re: Who are you!? I'm StarLord man!! WHO? Costume and props W.I.P! Rocket Raccoon

Got in a few base coats on my Starlord bucket early, early, in the morning! We've been having 100 degree weather here in southern California in October! Not suitable for painting, molding, or casting!

So I also took a detour and started working more Rocket!! This is what happens when you have packing foam, serrated knife, and hot glue gun! Not screen accurate but about 6 inches taller than my daughter and about 2 pounds!! She loves it and wants the colors to be purple and pink! So Base coat of pink with purple battle damage!

CIMG3461.JPGCIMG3462.JPGCIMG3463.JPG

I also started on her front and back "life pack" as I call it! The greeblies that seem to keep Rocket alive and talking! Ran out of black craft foam so another run to Michaels!
CIMG3459.JPG

And finally I didn't like the color of the fur tail and ears! No raccoon is black and gray! So I touched it up with brown fabric paint! Much better now! More Rocket!

Just working on yet another Guardians of the Galaxy project! Gamora's sword! Basically piecing it together and sanding, sanding, sanding to get the basic shape. Made of eva foam so it is Disneyland safe!!!

Re: Who are you!? I'm StarLord man!! WHO? Costume and props W.I.P! Rocket Raccoon

Well sometimes twice is the charm! I was really dissatisfied with my original choices of color for my Starlord bucket that I started all over again! I originally started out with a silver basecoat and followed that up with black. My intention was to sand through the black to get the battle damaged silver. That was a disaster!

To start over I first sanded the daylights out of the old paint job. reprimered, and sanded down with 2000 grit sand paper. Next came the meticulous process of masking off the areas that were not going to be Rustoleum metallic gun metal gray. I ventured out into trying liquid masking! We will see how that works out. I used it on all the gold, silver areas like around the eyes and small details under the ears; also the silver trim on the breathers.

Now after three days of prep I finally applied the first layer of gun metal gray! All I can say is I am very happy!!! First coat and it may all that is needed!!!

Re: Who are you!? I'm StarLord man!! WHO? Costume and props W.I.P! STARLORD BUCKET PA

Tried out the spats with shoes! I had to remove the zipper flap from the pants so that I could zip up the spats. Due to time constraints I had to go with spats! Before D23 costume contest next year I'll have finished and modded boots!

CIMG3482.JPGCIMG3483.JPGCIMG3484.JPGCIMG3485.JPG

This is what it looks like with the zipper flap and how the spats won't zip up. Removed the zipper flap; still zips; and the spat fits!

CIMG3486.JPGCIMG3488.JPGCIMG3491.JPGCIMG3492.JPG

Once I get my leather cut for the SL covers I will remove the following areas from the spat.
CIMG3482-1.jpg

Also my Sketchers came with this elastic around the insert area. Makes them hard to get on so I just cut the elastic area!
CIMG3489.JPGCIMG3490.JPG

Also my breather pipes are done! Just need to dry fit and paint!!!

Re: Who are you!? I'm StarLord man!! WHO? Costume and props W.I.P! Jacket MODS

While my bucket dries between each color and section I started attacking my jacket. Everyone has their likes and dislikes about the FJacket but I for one like it because of the color.

I started making my mods having hemmed and hawed over what to do! After looking over the jacket I started attacking it!

First I removed the liner from the edge of the sleeve at the wrist. I plan on modding the ends to match SL jacket but that also gave me access directly to the leather underside!
CIMG3502.JPGCIMG3504.JPGCIMG3503.JPGCIMG3501.JPG

Next I prepared my template for the valve details. 2mm cowskin glued to pig skin which is very thin.
CIMG3505.JPGCIMG3506.JPG

Next I smothered the crappachino out of the leather with white leather glue from Tandy.
CIMG3508.JPGCIMG3507.JPG

Using a rounded tool and a square tool I started pushing the leather around the edges over and over and over until the glue started to dry. One final pressing to ensure all the glue was evenly spread out.
CIMG3509.JPGCIMG3510.JPGCIMG3511.JPG

Painted valve on the raised area. The valve still needs to completely dry and be sealed with acrylic spray. I will probably use epoxy to glue it to the jacket to ensure it is on for good!

Re: Who are you!? I'm StarLord man!! WHO? Costume and props W.I.P! Jacket MODS

Excellent work! I'm inspired to finish my jacket now.

Re: Who are you!? I'm StarLord man!! WHO? Costume and props W.I.P! Jacket MODS

Jacket work continues!!! Left sleeve this time. This sleeve presented big problems mainly because the design of the jacket itself. The outer flaps are sewn into the sleeve and I really didn't want to undo all the thread due to the needle holes. I already have to deal with the needle holes from the inaccurate straps which I have removed.

First off the template for the embossing!
CIMG3521.JPGCIMG3520.JPG

Painted up the shoulder insignia. This was the item that was used to scale all the embossing pieces. Standalone and side by side to movie version. Sealed it up with acrylic spray.
CIMG3524.JPGMy version. CIMG3525.JPGSide by side with movie version.

Now to attack the left sleeve! Undo the wrist sewing to pull away the liner and undo the glued folded leather.
CIMG3500.JPGCIMG3526.JPGCIMG3527.JPGCIMG3528.JPG

Like I stated I had to deal with the needle holes but they came in hand as a guide to where the bottom of the embossed pieces will start. Still researching how to plug those guys up. I have heard people fill them with PVA glue and dye.....more on that later!
CIMG3529.JPGCIMG3530.JPGCIMG3531.JPG

Now for the scary part! How to get these templates inside the sleeve. Like I said the flap is sewn into the sleeve and the only way to get access is through the top where the zipper is....in my opinion a waste of leather at the top!! I may cut it out from underneath and use it for some other mods. So back to the sleeve! I ended up cutting a slit inside into the actual sleeve to expose the leather under the flap. I used the holes as a guide once again. I ended up removing about six inches in height and also the width of the flap.
CIMG3532.JPGCIMG3533.JPG

Once the liner is sewn back into the wrist and the top of the flap (where the buckle will go and the current zipper is) the sleeve will be sealed back up. I may patch up the hole inside with a piece of lambskin.

The hard part was now spreading glue on the embossed template, pushing it up the sleeve, placing it correctly, and getting it settled in before the glue started drying. After several times I ended up with this look! Not the greatest and not as tight as the movie version but you can see the general shapes. I think this leather is slightly thicker than the move version. I also ended up getting glue in the sleeve that was cleaned up before drying so the sleeve wouldn't be closed up.
CIMG3535.JPGCIMG3534.JPGCIMG3537.JPG

Now to continue modding!!! Waiting for the final silver layer on bucket to dry!!!

Re: Who are you!? I'm StarLord man!! WHO? Costume and props W.I.P! Jacket MODS

More jacket mods continue! The Awesome Mix is very inspiring!

I know it is not exactly screen accurate but for now it will do! I need to find some type of paste or leather repair material to blend the two pieces together and dye! Probably need to go scour the high end car dealership repair shops and ask them what they use to repair leather upholstery.

Re: Who are you!? I'm StarLord man!! WHO? Costume and props W.I.P! Jacket MODS

So just to clarify you make these templates and put this glue on them and just work the leather around it? Have a video that you went off of? I'd like to try this also but never seen before and would be helpful. Coat is looking amazing!

Hey what is that sleeve valve piece made of anyway?

Re: Who are you!? I'm StarLord man!! WHO? Costume and props W.I.P! Jacket MODS

Ah. Dangit. I'll have to be content with kitbashing something I think, though I am getting a couple things printed for my costume.

Re: Who are you!? I'm StarLord man!! WHO? Costume and props W.I.P! Jacket MODS

I've been looking high and low for a material to cover the breather filters. I tried the braided metal hose covers (think washing machine hoses with metal covers) but the wire frays too much and it was difficult and bulky attaching them.

Next I tried braided nylon rope but it did not paint well.

So I started thinking of heat shrink tubing and came across this during a Google image search. It is non-fray when cutting and expands and collapses to 3/8 inch which is the size of the breather filter greeblies.

I race cars....I KNOW those hoses...Fragola makes them....

Re: Who are you!? I'm StarLord man!! WHO? Costume and props W.I.P! Jacket MODS

You could try automotive fuel line hose. It's small, about the right size, and braided steel, so it'll look accurate but again, it's a pain in the butt to cut. Without a special tool, a hacksaw can be ugly.

Re: Who are you!? I'm StarLord man!! WHO? Costume and props W.I.P! Jacket MODS

A labor of love but it is 99% done! My first true "BUCKET" that I purchased and worked on! Still need to add the lenses, LEDs, foam padding, and seal it up in acrylic! It took about 1 month to complete working a few hours on weekends and after hours on weekdays!

What I learned?

1. Go slow! Don't work fast because you will end up re-sanding and repainting!
2. Make it up as you go along! Some pieces I had problems with so I made up my own especially on the breather pipe joints.
3. Rely on the Good Ole RPF for hints! Thanks RPF! That's you guys!

SLB 01-1.jpgWhat it should look like wtih LEDs...............I hope!

nice work......

Re: Who are you!? I'm StarLord man!! WHO? Costume and props W.I.P! HELMET / BUCKET

Nice work on the bucket!! (and the jacket too!)

Also glad I'm not the only one who feels the need to fabric paint my raccoon fur! My wife's been working away on it and it's killing me to see all those black and white stripes on it.

Now we begin the LEATHER portion of our journey! And this is the area in which I excel and have all the materials for construction.

First started out with these. Still needs the edging but that requires hand sewing which takes the longest.
