hey guys... even though this is for a prop, im sure the costume guys would know what material this would be. Im thinking a sort of textured leather/vinyl. but im not sure... what do you guys think?

I'd go with pig skin too. don't know where to get it, sorry

you may want to try some fabric stores, because I've seen vinyl's that had very simmilar texture to that.

Looks like Stingray skin to me, if you type that in a google search the 1st few images of their skin looks just like that.

You could go either way with pigskin or stingray. But with stingray, you're going to have to do some tanning to reach that color, whereas the pigskin will get there a lot easier through natural coloring. Is Tandy Leather still around? That used to be the go to place to pick up some leather. Looks like they still are: http://www.tandyleatherfactory.com

i would have to say that this is definatly NOT stingray. Stingray has a different texture more Pebbles and uneven due to the nature of the skin. Just google stingray leather in google images and take a look see. This looks like pigskin or could be a fake leatehr material easy to find in most fabric stores.

polished stringray skin looks like it would have the texture, but ive yet to see this maroon color (need help I.D.'ing exact shade too, as i want this to be ACCURATE), nor have i seen any sheets of it long or wide enough to wrap this handle without getting the larger nodes on it as well. i also thought football, but where the hell would i find an 18"x3" sheet of that stuff? some basketballs look like they have the correct color and texture, but yet again nothing exact and i have no idea where to buy sheets of it

It looks like its off of some sort of anime thing that is trying to resemble a katana... in which cast the ray skin would be more canonical. But if you're going for recreation you can get the job done with even synthetic pigskin (what most footballs/basketballs at the sporting goods store are made of now)

well actually its the Buster Sword in the screen cap... but ive been thinking its leather for the longest time. same just has that look to it that doesnt match

Tandy Leather, they have shelves covered in all kinds of leather, from smooth finish to ridiculous mock alligator skin. They should have what you're looking for, if you're willing to buy a $200 skin.

Not sure if this would work but I have seen those steering wheel
covers that some stores sell with many different textures such as that.

Just a thought.
