What's on your workbench? (no Star Wars, Marvel or DC stuff)

Re: What's on your workbench?

Above my workbench. :)

Very cool!

Re: What's on your workbench?

For my nephew, I'm working on a Halo EOD helmet and Reach pistol. It's amazing how much more you end up sanding a helmet when it's for a 7-year old kid, especially one with as many hard angles as the EOD. Picked this up from SigmaLS, but I'm pretty sure the original cast was done by Ithica.

And the pistol:

For myself, I'm working on a Captain America build. The helmet I picked up is just a tad too small, so I've chopped it in half to add an extra inch or so for my giant melon.

Unless someone has a better idea, the plan is to hot glue a plastic strip on the inside to act as a brace, then fill the gap on the top side with bondo. Shouldn't be too bad, I just need to find the time.

Yeah, it's a Dave EoD. Pretty sure I had that in the JY description. Interesting story that one. Base build was done and unfinished by somebody. Dave bought it with the molding rights and gave it the details. Joe molded it. And I worked on the H3 Mk V and modifying the Scout so didn't have a hand in it. But so was the old Soaring Hammer prop team. Just a bunch of guys having fun working on stuff and sharing it.:thumbsup

Very cool, I had no idea so many people had a hand in it. He thinks the EOD helmet is basically the greatest thing ever, so he'll be thrilled once he gets it (it's a surprise).

Re: What's on your workbench?

I'm starting to construct a full size Star Trek TNG bridge.

Nooooiiiiice...Pics???

As for what I'm working on??? I've got a DStines Mark VII Tricorder kit that I plan on getting electronics for in the future. Not sure if I want to go the Myron Stapleton route and add an MP4 player for the viewscreen...(Thought of that a thousand times LOL Might actually do it).

So far I only have the outer shell and no pics to prove it, but will get some soon :)

Right now, I'm still in the research phases. I will start building within the next couple of months. I will start a new thread to show my progress

Im stopping in for a little advice, I've been trying to mod my 11th doctor sonic screwdrivers, I've got a C/O one, and the actual working screwdriver one (sans the ability to open its claws :[ )

my first thought was just to repaint them because that seemed like the logical thing to do, and it turned out pretty well... at first.

Mmm just look at the nice glossy shimmery goodness!

Except not.

the second you touch it? it fades away and becomes this nasty matte crayola copper color

SO then I though... Gloss/enamel/clear coat! yay!

Wrong again.

I used an automotive clear coat so that It could continuously be handled without losing the shine, at least that's what Jams at Home Depot thought would work and here's the result...

It's almost EXACTLY the same color it was when it came out of the box!!

I've done alot of painting before but never had to recreate a polished metal look, mostly just grungy beaten replications.

does anyone know of a way to preserve that pristine shine?

I'd be ever so grateful for some pointers or anything close to it.

Try hitting an auto parts store and picking up a can of wet-look clear coat for wheels. It's been years since I used the stuff, but the effect after 2-3 coats is damned impressive - almost like you put a coat of glass over it.

thanks for the advice :) Im definitely going to look into it!

About the bridge, the whole bottom floor of my house is one huge room. I've done the measurements and everything with fit. I also have room to put the conference room and the captains ready room. I'm actually really excited. I'm still trying to decide a reasonable budget. I think the hardest things to do will be the main viewscreen, the curved wood tactical console, and the conference table. If anyone has ANY advice, please respond. I'm still trying to decide whether to have some actual touch screens that would activate sounds.

Re: What's on your workbench?

My WIP:

I'm working on bondo/puttying it and sanding it down smoothly, then I'll throw in some Stone Grey and Silver metallic misting.

I was going to post a shot of my workbench, but the question there would be "what's NOT on your workbench" as it is currently entirely stuffed to the rafters with every imaginable tool, fabric, foam and paint can... we call it 'The Room Where Everything Lives'; once I get that sorted I can start on my next projects.

I'm 'trying' to scratchbuild a Farscape Peacekeeper pulse rifle!
I'll post pics when it starts looking a little more like it should........
