What are your techniques for determining measurements of real world props?

As you know, when trying to replicate a prop one of the key methods is to use detailed reference photos. However, determining the size of an object can be tricky as there are a lot of factors that can result in false results (camera distortion, shadows, angles, perspective, etc.).

I am wondering what techniques you use to determine the size of something.

More specifically, I am wondering for those who do the overlay method (3D modelling an object). What is your technique of choice to get a perfect overlay of the image and the 3D model that accounts for camera phenomenon?

Thanks!

This connects my entry into this black hole of a hobby, ~30 years ago.

The book...

From Star Wars To Indiana Jones: The Lucas Film Archives...

It offered dimensions, and orthographic images.

I was off to the races.

best to have atleast 2 pics from 90 degree different angles. 3 dimensions front-back, left-right, up-down

Each pic needs a reference point for scale.

I actually use my computer screen for small objects, turn up the brightness and zoom the image to reference object's size, or use a tv screen for bigger objects and if the reference photo has a body part in it, I use my body part in the same positions and zoom the photo to correct size.
