WETA: District 9 Guns

Though the lack of weathering and at least 10 places that are different from the promo pics makes it less sexy for me, but no biggy, I'll mod mine when I got it.

Really? 10? Unless you are also counting differences in paint, so far I have only seen 3 prominent physical differences:

1 - the knob on the receiver is different
2 - there is an additional detail on the large black detail piece on the side of the receiver
3) the igniter on the front of the gun is attached with a phillips screw where it appears the original utilized a hex.

There are obvious paint differences, but those don't concern me.

If there are other physical differences you have found, I'd be interested in knowing about them!

Yup, Andrews. 3 physical plus 7 differences in paint(the locations of the markings). There shouldn't be any physical differences. It's not the Weta I know and love, these small issues(paint) can easily be spotted and improved before the production phase, don't you think? Not to mention the physical differences.

Don't get me wrong, I love piece but with more support/love comes with more expectation...

I guess it depends on the original. In regard to the paint job, Tim already said there are purposeful differences, not to mention when you have an item mass produced in China, you simply aren't going to get the same quality paint job as a hand-finished piece. In regard to the paint... I look at the price... and for $500, I can add a bit more wethering and decals myself.

In regard to the details like the knob and the grill detail, I can't help but wonder if a different base was used. The addition to the grill piece makes me think that this piece may have actually fallen off the prototype we saw... who knows. I can't explain the difference in the knob. As far as the screw, easy replacement for me.

Is this a perfect reproduction down to the last detail? No, but at the price point, I think Weta is so far ahead of its peers it isn't even funny. I can't believe they managed to get this done with relatively no clean up work on the original. If you want a comparison, go check the eFX Vader helmet thread and all the concern on sanitizing the prop. This was my main concern as well and Weta handled it superbly.

I understand what you mean, Andrews. And I agreed with you. For the price, it is great. But the issues mentioned above can easily be improved. All the observations are based promo pics they used to promote the replica, that's the look I wanted and willing to paid for. We all know a perfect reproduction is almost impossible, but I definitely wasn't going for that. And yeah, I went through the Vader helmet thread.....lol. Just like the one we have over at the statueforum regarding the quality and accuracy of the Cinemaquette piece.

Like I said, most of the issues are easy fix when we get ours, so...but still.

Just took another look at the D-9 arc generator and this is the main difference I am seeing... and who is to say that there weren't different guns setup differently? I don't know. I am going to be VERY interested in see the guys from Weta at Comic Con and talking about the gun builds and the transition from the original prop to the replica. Anyway, here are two things I will CONSIDER doing to my replica when it comes in. Both seem to be incredibly minor changes. Again, I want to say I couldn't be happier with what I am seeing in the attached pics of the replica. I don't know if we have EVER seen a mass produced replica that was this close to the original source, have we?

It'll be interesting to see what other people receive. Could be that there are details (besides paint) that differ on all of them.

Since I like my props relatively clean, I'm glad they didn't ass mine up too much!

Yup, those and lots of other places needs to be...tweaked.

Well... lets start making a list!!! I think it would be great if we came up with graphics files so people could make their own transfers. I know I want to add some!

Art, you really can't analyze the guns base on a few screencaps or pics we have unless you want to lock down just 1 particular gun that is seen.

There were many guns made and used and we don't have the access to them so it's hard to nail anything down for sure.

That round part does appear on both sides in these pics below. The Left details are almost identical to the right but are flipped over. There looks to be some screws missing though.

Wait till the book comes out and you might get better images of the gun.

Well, we can probably just consider the AG we're getting are one of kind pieces as I'm sure back at the prwan planet, there are millions of AGs that has differences in all of them. :D

Good point, franz. I'll have to think about it a bit and see exactly what mine looks like when it arrives. I think between that and talking to the guys at Weta, I will get a better idea of how I want to approach my gun.

I would REALLY love to add the LED and spinning effect of the center grill detail, but I am afraid the extensive would that would take migh exceed my skill level.

A cool thing to note; as I was watching the scene FB screencapped above, there appear to be at least three elements that have been photoshopped in place. You can actually see them move from frame to frame. I have pointed them with arrows and also pointed out what appears to be a plate screwed on to conceal the trigger/led mechanism, much like what we saw on griefboy's gun.

After reviewing the movie a bit more, I can ID at least three Arc Generator variations. I am sure there were more but Wikus carries at least two different hero guns during the attack to retrieve the fluid canister. Interestingly enough, while there are differences in the production Arc Generator replica from the prototype photos, the production paint job we see VERY closely matches one of the hero guns Wikus carries! Way to go Weta!

I have just recived my Arc Generator here in Canada and I must say I am so totaly impressed with this weapon. :thumbsup WETA rocks!

Wow, I'm liking what I'm seeing of the Arc guns people are receiving! I wished I had gotten on the list for one of these. Maybe next time.
