WETA: District 9 Guns

Alright... here is after a little more time with the weathering. I am still not completely pleased, but definitely getting there.

Alright... here is after a little more time with the weathering. I am still not completely pleased, but definitely getting there.

Looks great! I'll be doing the same once mine comes in, and hopefully figuring out the battery/LED combo as well.

Someone asked for prorgress pics... I didn't take any... but here is what I did.

1) Took an exacto and added a ton of scrapes all over the black parts of the gun. I am not all that good at this and it is hard to make them look really natural, but I mainly ran them up the edges and corners... Basically, anywhere I felt there should be scratches.

2. Thinned down liquitex Raw Umber in just a little water then took a disposable brush, paint a little on, let it dry for just a couple of seconds, then sponge it off with a paper towel. It is really important NOT to do this evenly and to allow drips and runs where they would naturally occur.

3. Thinned down liquitex Mars Black and did all the creases in the gun as well as a few places over the Raw Umber to tone it down some.

4. Used a bit of straight Mars Black to create skids and scrape marks.

5. Used drybrushed silver over edges of fin assembly and over turn knob. This really needs to be very very subtle. Less is more.

6. Mixed Liquitex Cadmium Yellow with a touch of Burnt Umber and thinned with water. dripped over all "fittings" and allowed to run whereever it naturally wanted to run. Also did this on all the little fittings down the barrel.

Repeat the above steps until you are happy.

Here is the barrel. It is a bit hard to see, but hopefully you can make out the yellow drips from each of the fittings... again, I just let the paint run wherever it wanted.

Art, it's just plain ol' Weta. No need for caps.

Looks good, by the way... here's hoping that waiting list opens up!

I got mine today and I love it! It certainly is a beast to hold, and displaying it? I'd rather it was a tabletop display. I'm working on building a stand for it now.

I got my Arc today as well! This thing is a beast! You don't realize how big it is until you see it in person. They did an excellent job on these, any better and it'd essentially be screen used haha! I just need to figure out how to display it!

Got mine. One of the best out of the box prop replicas I have seen. Does everyone's box say edition size 200??

Was anyone else's damaged? Mine has a fairly sizable crack right in front of the trigger guard... wondering what I'm going to be able to do about that.

Weta seems like good people. Id contact them and see what they say. I wouldn't call this piece fragile by any means, but I was kind of surprised these (mostly) are making them to us in one piece. They are just so complex in their build that they just SEEM fragile, though their quite sturdy.

Really sorry to hear that Volpin's didn't make it intact. I actually thought the packing was a little light for a prop this size, especially along the sides. If the package took a major hit there, there could be some damage. But the brilliant way everything was taped together with spacers in-between pretty much prevents damage from shaking and jostling.

I would bet they have a few extras available. Still, it always sucks to receive a broken prop. It's been happening to me a lot recently, too!:cry Although my AG made it intact, thank dog!:D
