Well, it looks like they made an updated version of Luke's ROTJ saber for TFA...

I'll say it again for the jury to hear... but I don't think that area around the nipple is recessed. It's either flush or up a step... I feel it's shiny, and reflecting the nipple a bit and making it look deeper.

That said, I'm in for this run, but I will also "AHA!" if we ever get a really good look, and it turns out I'm right! :D

For simplicity's sake, it could just be brass angle stock epoxied to aluminum rails machined into the top of the control box piece. The brass would be slightly wider than the aluminum rails. Kind of a halfway point between the ISYHCANL and deleted scene/Magic of Myth versions.

Judging from the shadow the right rail casts on the circuit board, it actually looks like the rails are no longer gripping the circuit board -- there's a gap between the top of the circuit board and the rails, though the rails still overhang the board as before. The circuit board looks thicker, too, and set down in between the aluminum rails.

I can't tell what is going on in the area between the brass stock and the aluminum control box's rails... in the end view this is darker, as if it's painted or a separate part. On the original hero there were darker grey rails here that were a separate part. They may have tried to replicate that? But still, for the purposes of a simple replica they could be painted portion of the rails integral to the aluminum box.

I see symmetrical and parallel, especially in the frame with the Ren lightsaber lit up. It looks like it's just the perspective and maybe some lens distortion that is throwing it off...

If it actually is slanted one side, I think it would have to be intentional - the machinist would have had to make a few inexplicable mistakes/bad decisions to get a simple facing operation so wrong if they intended parallel sides.

But nonetheless symmetrical and parallel would be my vote! :)

Another question... does it have the chamfer on the base of the box on the side we can't see, and below the black buttons, as on the MoM hero? It appears to me that it does not, but it's so blurry!

I dunno man... I've stared at that pic a lot...

Convinced it's not recessed... or if it is, not by much. A hair. :darnkids <--- I don't know what that guy is... but he best emotes my skills at deciphering not-so-clear images.
 
Trying to see it, but it really looks recessed to me. Every raised edge on the face of the emitter has a highlight/shine on the edge, except that one.

the box also looks asymmetrical as well, to my eye. :unsure
 
I see it recessed as well, but not a lot. I actually think it's the same surface as the outer ring, so basically it's flat, with a perforated ring added to it.

The way the light reacts to the darkened area around the center makes it look like it has to be lower than the rest.
I don't think it could be colored black either, because lower on the grip even the black reflects some of the light.
Might be wrong, just thought I'd give it a shot.
 
The more I look at it, the more I can see why one might think it was flush with (but definitely not raised from) the other point. It would make the most sense, if you're using a live blade for fight scenes, if it were recessed. And that would be my personal preference too.
 
yeah, counter to my drawing, I'm more on the "flush" side with a *hair* of a lip.

But then I can see how it looks recessed in other pics... and likely is (my wife is siding with recessed).

But I'm standing my ground, if only so if by a fluke I'm right, then I can brag about it... AND BRAG I WILL!
 
I see super-recessed. But I'm also seeing a thicker ring of holes than in the renderings, so maybe the recess is only "ring deep" and I just see a fatter ring.
 
It almost looks like the ring of holes is beveled inwards a bit, like a Balance Pipe.
 
Initially I thought the ring with holes was simply a piece stuck onto the classic (flush) emitter, but now I see quite a good recess between the ring and emitter's central nub. I also see the holes in the ring being deeper than the height of the ring, just like AS has modeled them.

Edit: maybe the ring IS a separate piece that is press fit into a larger recess on the emitter piece? You can see a dividing line between the ring and its reflection but perhaps that is weathering grime at the base of the ring.

At one point I thought the ring with the 16 holes was 1/8" thick but the more I look at it, it would appear that this ring is reflected on the main largest ring so I think it's only about 1/16" thick/tall instead. I still say that it is a deep, recessed hole around the center protrusion. I also say that the center protrusion is of a smaller diameter than the original. The original (going by Imperial SAE equivalents) would appear to be 3/4" in diameter where as this new one appears to be 5/8" in diameter.

Here's a 1080p video I made, showing only the frames where the new Luke RotJ lightsaber is on screen (I had to capture that part twice to replace a few dropped frames from the first go around). Watching it in motion may help with certain dimensions. *shrugs*

I know what you mean but I think the thicker ring is a reflection in the emitter face that visually doubles the ring's thickness.
 
Basically, I dig the AS render, though I might make the hole ring a smidge thicker. And I def would want a symmetrical box! But I think the recess is fairly deep.

Thanks! Yea, after watching that I think the ring of holes is not completely flat.
