Watching Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow for 1st time

I just starting watching this and had to turn it off. The lighting is horrible in it. I love the 30's and 40's serials and cartoons but could not stand this train-wreck. The volume seemed to bounce all over too (from low to high). I was really hoping this was good. I actually got a headache watching it. Is it really this bad or am I just not giving it a chance?

I enjoyed it as well.
Loved the 30's retro futuristic designs, loved the desaturated color palette, and the soft lighting.
Not the greatest story, but enjoyable and a worthy homage to the old b-movie serials.

Well I agree that it wasn't good. At all.

So many missed opportunities. Mind you I think I rented this about 5 years ago- but I do remember it being bad.

No. I don't recall what specifically turned me off. And no, I don't plan on watching it again.

The previews made me not want to see it. Aren't previews supposed to make you want to see a film? I've never had any interest in this film. Looked horrible.

Definatly corny and fun. Loved it.
But . . you are a few years late, and after LOTR and somthing like Avatar . . .well, I'm sure it's just quaint.

Like watching Little Mermaid then Snow White, ya know?

I really liked that movie.
When I first looked at it, I didn't knew what kind of movie it was.....I was very surprised. A kind of retro-anticipation movie....I find the work and search done on lightning (like in 300) is really good, a cool touch.

I have it in my computer and won't hesitate to watch it again.

I really liked it, since I like stuff from that era (Raiders/Rocketeer/etc). Showed it to my 6 year-old son and he became obsessed with it. We eventually had to buy a 2nd copy of it. :lol

Some great ideas but I just can't get beyond Jude Law as leading man material. He has zero charisma and is far more "choir boy" than "sky captain".

Still the designs and obvious passion involved didn't stop me from picking up the discounted dvd, the making of doc is very interesting.

plus gwyneth paltrow is hawt.

I liked it, a real 30's 40's serial feel to it. over the top james bondian action with the P40. good fun, the chemistry between the paltrow and jude law is very good, I liked it.

I wanted to really like it at the time but the movie put me off too effectively. I still really love that ray gun and the robots. :)

I heard somebody reviewing the film on a podcast awhile back, and it was pointed out that the film copies the structure of the old serials TOO successfully. Serial episodes are SHORTS of only a few minutes long, and are NOT meant to be viewed one right after the other!

So the key to watching "Sky Captain" is to watch it as though it were a theater serial... just watch a scene or two, then turn it off. Hit it again tomorrow. That way you don't get burned out with the pace of it.

I have yet to try this myself but it sounds like a promising approach!
