Watched some movies the last few days...

So, I got around to watching some movies I hadn't yet seen. Yeah, I know, I've been slow at getting around to some of these.

Brief report:

Total Recall (2012): Pretty good considering all the bad I'd heard about it. One complaint... Lens flare much?

8mm: Good. Nice to see them dive a little deeper into the grit that a lot of others would usually avoid.

The Big Year: Casual, but nice. Wouldn't go as far as calling it a comedy, but amusing at least.

Scott Pilgrim VS The World: Gotta keep on ya toes, but fun. I do hope that it won a bag of visual awards. Very impressive.

The Shining: By today's standards, pacing was fairly slow, but Jack really nailed that part. Not bad. Will poo poo the female lead though. On numerous levels, she really bothered me.

Abe Lincoln. Vampire Hunter: So long as you're quick to accept the tone of the movie, it's decent fun. Don't take it too seriously though or you'll constantly be saying "C'mon... That could never happen..."

Vacancy: Yeah.... Not bad. Left feeling a little unsatisfied. Needed a little more stuffing.

Lord of the Rings (1st one): People have been telling me for years that I need to watch it (along with Star Wars and Harry Potter). Never been that interested. For my partner, I gave it a go. I think I got near the end where they all starting fighting or something? It was one of those brief moments where they weren't walking. But, yeah. I fell asleep.

The Goonies: Yep. Said I was a little slow with getting around to some of these. Anyhow. This was great. One of the more noticeable things I took from this film was the sadness in realising how so many movies now just don't 'get it' compared to the films of that era. I couldn't work out exactly if it was the innocence, the cast, the technology even. To make sense of what I'm trying to say, if that movie was made today for the first time with the same story and all, it just wouldn't be the same.

I think that's it for now. Thank you for your time.

Just watched Total Recall yesterday and reacted the same. Not bad at all. Didn't deserve to be panned so badly.

Why does everyone always say that?

Because hermits in North Korea have seen Star Wars! :lol

Seriously, in terms of the industry it's likely the most influential film in the last 50 years. 90% of the movies that come out now are a direct result in one way or another of Star Wars.

WATCH IT! :thumbsup

My niece has seen and loves Star Wars. All 6 episodes. She's three years old.

And every time someone mentions The Goonies, I have to say, "Do the Truffle Shuffle!"

I loved Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World. One of my favorite movies ever. If you read the comics, you will appreciate the movie more.

Doh- now I can't edit my post.

What?! Have you lived in a hole in the ground or something?
To be honest, since learning back in school that my lack of seeing Star Wars was such a niche, it's something I've voluntarily continued with. Always a good conversation starter... :cheers

Good point!!

Also, I've wondered: is there a 'Star Wars' of "chick flicks"? You know, Fried Green Tomatoes, Beaches...something like that.

On occasion I have met a person or two, here and there, who have not seen Star Wars. Most of them wear it like a badge. It falls into the "I do not conform, I am different" type attitude. I'm not saying this is true of the OP, I don't know this person. But in my experience, that's usually the way it goes.

But here is the way I look at it. If you have not seen Star Wars in this present time (and you are over the age of 10), then maybe you really shouldn't watch it. There is no way you will be able to recieve the magic of it that most of us hold dear to our hearts. Unfortunately, by watching pretty much any sci-fi/fantasy film that came after it, you are already jaded. You have seen more action, better vfx, etc in the films that followed it. It will never hold up for you. Sadly, you can never go back.

Yep.

BS. Everyone I've finally convinced to watch the OT (original versions) TOTALLY gets it and feels ashamed that they went so long without seeing it. The response basically being "OMG, this was 1977???" This is ****ing awesome! Funnily enough, ROTJ seems to have the most impact.

Not to mention, never seeing Star Wars means you miss out on SO MUCH that is part of our current pop culture. Hell, watch just about any show on TV and you've missed out on references.

Like it or not Star Wars is a completely ingrained part of our modern culture. No longer will someone referencing a bad place call it "Sodom & Gamorrah", they'll call it a "wretched hive of scum and villiany".

Stop the hipster crap and watch Star Wars.

There is no need to be rude and call BS. I stated that it was the way I looked at it. I did not say it was universal fact. Some will like it some will not.

I was calling the concept BS based on my experience of what we're talking about, no rudeness to you. It's like saying that people won't like Casablanca because bigger films have come after. A truly classic film is just that, classic. It can be appreciated despite not having huge CG explosions.
