AAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa................... :cry Your doing a beakie. Looks great though. Keep us updated.

For some reason I've always liked the "beaky" version (Mark 6 if memory serves). The other one always struck me as too suggestive of the stormtroopers in Star Wars. Plus, the beaked version strikes me as more practical and suggestive of current experimental facial armor systems:

Here's another picture I took of the sculpt in progress. I've done some smoothing since this was taken:

And here's a side view. I'm not happy with the vents in the cheek each time I sculpt them out. I guess I should stop trying to sculpt this from memory.

I still need to do a little bit more in the symmetry department. Then, once I have it all smooth again, I can start with some of the smaller details like the vents in the cheeks.

I have been following this thread with interest. I am not too familar with the armored units. Can someone post a few pictures of the space marines? When I look for pictures of what the suits look like, all I can find are small shots of the game pieces

Reposting any of their artwork is something they go berserk over, so rather than risk getting anyone in trouble, here are some links to their artistic representations.

GW official artwork 1

GW Space marine artwork

They are futuristic combat augmentation armor suits. The helmet and armor has many, many variants, the current sculpt is of the "beaky" armor helm, one of the earliest representations put forth by the company of Space Marine Armor.

Looks bad ass so far, great work.

That armor looks like a huge undertaking, not just to make, but to wear. The size of the pieces like shoulders and legs add to the difficulty. Not only do you have to make the shoulder bell, but you need some type of support system under it to keep it in place while wearing, and still include the artwork sculpts. That's a lot of weight to carry around.

I can imaging that if anyone did this and offered copies, that it would be pretty pricey.

Definitely a pricey undertaking. The set I'm working on now runs about $1000, and it's a much simpler affair than a Space Marine. And the sculptured details make it a lot more "interesting" to make.

The pics I linked to, admittedly are more ornate suits than some of the old standard grunt type suits, but they give you an idea what a space marine is supposed to look like. They are super-human bioengineered soldiers 7 to 8 feet tall, so you can scale some of the size down a bit to fit a normal person, but you are right, it would be a huge undertaking to make a suit. I would love to see someone tackle it though. an ABS/Styrene suit with a thick foam backing or something would probably do the trick.

I have often thought about taking a poke at it myself, but for a first project it would be a pretty darn steep learning curve.

I disagree. Using Styrene to make the suit would add so much weight. I would do it in EVA foam covered with vinyl. Easy to work with and incredibly lightweight. A whole suit would only weight a few pounds.

I've decided to round off the protrusion on the back of the helmet to match the old plastic miniatures. There's still a long way to go, but I'm liking the shape better:

I'll be going to sea in July and gone through Halloween, so I'm thinking of putting together a full suit in time for Halloween 2007.

My plan is to make the shells resin with a light fiberglass reinforcement. Then I'll pad it out with upholstery foam to make it fit. I'm only 5'7" but I'll be able to build up the feet to make me at least 6'4" and with the jetpack, I should top out at about 6'8." With the jetpack and shoulders built up, I should be about four feet wide, so it will be an imposing costume.

The good part is that I will be able to add details if I want, but with the Mk6 armor you can get away with making it very plain. The bad part is that it will be pretty heavy, but I've got 16 months to get in shape for that...
