Warehouse 13 - The Tesla Gun

Thank You for those pix.:thumbsup

It looks like one of the copper tubes on the front is missing (upper left)
The back end of the clear tubes look like they are plugged with resin

Hey guys I'm new here also and I would like to give this build a try, the place were I work just got in a 12 foot piece of round brass so I was thinking of machining that center piece. And using some scrap 1/4 piece of aluminum for the body, I will let you know how it comes out.

Yeah good job. The close-up photos are great. They definitely clear up a couple of things.

I still think the one seen in the pilot had real glass tubes but obviously the tubes on this one and probably others have been doctored, more than likely for durability and safety reasons. It's so easy to see the bases of those rear "tubes" are just plugs of resin basically extending into the tube a little.

I'd been tossing up whether the joining rods in the middle section were threaded rods or solid ones with springs. Now it's confirmed. I think the whole middle section is a constructed piece not a found part. Also it looks like the panel with the two little meters might have a clear layer of something over it like thick cellophane or very thin acrylic.

The part used for the trigger is still a puzzle. It looks less like a modified angled valve now and more like a constructed (molded) part based on that shape.

It's amazing how crappy it looks when seen up close like that though, especially the rear tubes.

Personally I'm still going with the real glass tubes as no one will be running around with it. In fact I might not let anyone touch it. LOL

So... QMX finally put out pictures of their Tesla:

They say they build the vaccum tubes by hand.

I've been wondering about the price ever since they got the licence to produce the replicas. The price of the Farnsworth pretty much confirmed things. Given how much more work will go into making one of these things than a Farnsworth, people are going to have to mortgage their houses.

It is nice though but once again it should be as they have access to every detail of the originals. I'm not completely sure about the tubes though. As for the "too clean" comment, it will be the look I go for with the Tesla.

impressive, how much is it and will it ever come out? lol

QMx doesn't seem to have released a single prop replica for sale that I can see from their site. Some toys, prints, models and a couple leather-based costume pieces... but not a single prop seems to have made it past the prototype stage yet. Shame, really, because their Warehouse 13 and Doctor Who stuff looks awesome.

Well, they did release the "stunt" Mal pistol from Serenity to mixed reviews as well as a few leather-based props. But yeah, they really do need to step up their release schedule. Everything I've bought from them so far has been top-notch though. They have the potential to put out some very cool items if they'd just step up their game. I also have the Serenity "Big Damn Model" and I can tell you that it is outstanding. (Expensive as hell, but truly beautiful.)

That Tesla looks real nice. If they keep it under 300 I might have to get one but if they go higher I'll most likely just make one myself. Looking at that photo, one you've got the parts produced it doesn't look like a complex build... not even the tubes.

Welcome TL, looking forward to your pics!

I'm thinking it will be a long time before this is released. QMx announced the license back at Comic-Con in July, saying the first product would be the Farnsworth. That was over six months ago, and still no Farnsworth, just blueprints. I'm very likely to buy the Tesla when it is available, but I'm glad I'm pressing ahead with my own model in the meantime.

That might just be from the plastic stand the gun was sitting on. I couldn't get an unobstructed shot of that side, so I just took a picture through the plastic stand. I don't think there was anything on the gun covering the meters...

Not technically accurate. They did have a number of them available at a convention a while back. They did produce them for sale. Many (including myself) were hoping that the initial price was for the 'prototype' production phase (as each one was hand-made) and they'd do a mass-run at a lower price (say $150).

Last I heard, they are still planning on doing a 'mass-run' of the Farnsworth, but they never put any details.

As for the Tesla... I would suspect it'll be the same.

Sorry. My error. I've only seen "Coming soon" on their Web site. I did not know about the ones sold at the convention. Still looking forward to seeing them. I just found their Facebook page and they say they anticipate having the Tesla in Q1 2011.

Oh no. That means only a year to play with the Tesla before the world comes to an end in 2012.
