Warehouse 13 - The Tesla Gun

QMx announced the license back at Comic-Con in July, saying the first product would be the Farnsworth. That was over six months ago, and still no Farnsworth, just blueprints.

Not technically accurate. They did have a number of them available at a convention a while back. They did produce them for sale. Many (including myself) were hoping that the initial price was for the 'prototype' production phase (as each one was hand-made) and they'd do a mass-run at a lower price (say $150).

Last I heard, they are still planning on doing a 'mass-run' of the Farnsworth, but they never put any details.

Not to sidetrack the "Tesla Gun" aspect of this thread, but just to further clarify the Farnsworth communicator release thus far...

I was fortunate to speak with Karl Derrick (QMx Design Director) this past September at DragonCon in Atlanta, Georgia regarding the Farnsworth which was available for sale at the QMx booth. Apparently only 100 units were built and assembled for the show -- with no two exactly alike. These were truly 'hand-made', 'hand-painted', and 'hand-assembled'... and I mean that in a really good way. Karl took the time to explain some of the processes used to get the details just right, and pointed out some things that only the super-critical would even notice. He was a super nice guy, and after a really great conversation, obviously an extremely detail orientated guy as well. I was catching him on the last day of the convention, and he had a grand total of four (4) Farnsworths left -- out of 100. Well, make that three left after I vacated the booth. ;) They were selling for $299.99 each, and you got a free rolled blueprint of Farnsworth's Farnsworth with your purchase.

As far as when they will be producing more, I haven't heard anything.

Yeah, there was a lengthy discussion over in the Farnsworth thread about "mass-produced" vs. "Hand-made" and the advantages and dis-advantages to each. Like most discussions, it came down to everybody had a different opinion and there's good and bad about both.

What it comes down to is that QMx's business model for these is to hand-craft these replicas thus driving up the price. The quality is higher, but it leaves it out of the 'available' price range for many of us.

The Tesla will be no different - and since the Tesla is more of a custom build than the Farnsworth, I'd be willing to bet it's going to be at LEAST $500 (okay, $499.99).

Well this is what I have so far, I wanted to start with the "barrel" first so to see the dimensions I needed for the body after I added the tubes. The round dics need to be a bit thinner but that will be no problem.

WOW! That's great!
What are you using? Just brass tubing?

Thanks guys, once I saw this thread I wanted to see If I could come up with something close to what you guys were looking for. Hey Doctor, its not tubing it is a solid round brass stock that was milled, what sucks is that I had to buy a whole six foot piece to make that one piece. Also at Interceptor6, if enough people like it and are interested in a gun I might make extras. Once again thank you, this is the first time I put any of my props online...Thanks

Yeah, I might be interested... For my money, that's the hardest part to figure out. Also, my metal cutting skills with my Dremel are very poor.. =(

I'd be interested depending on cost. I'm sure there is a bit of milling involved getting it like that but given I have a limited income price is always going to be important.

I was looking at the disc parts and thinking that the rear one at least would do better with a smaller hole in the centre. The main tube fits into the front one but a screw/bolt is going into the rear one. Of course it's always easier to make a small hole bigger if need be than make a big hole smaller.

The discs are just prototypes, but the hole on the back will be way smaller and the front one will be wide enough to fit the tube prongs. Right now I'm working on the dics holes and knob window...pics soon.

I'm definitely interested if you end up making extras.

Well I had to resize the berrel portion and open up the knob window a bit, I'm happy with the current size now. The disc walls still need to be reworked because the copper tubing need to go in a bit closer to the large tube. Tomorrow I will try to tackle the trigger area and aluminun body, while while I'm off next week I will try to come up with a display base for the gun. Since I will not be back to work till the beginning of the year there probably will be no updates so I want to wish you guys a Merry Christmas and a great New Year.:)

Looking really great, Timelordd! Again, if you end up with extra parts you want to sell off to offset your cost, I'm down.

Thanks...I was thinking that since I made it this far I might aswell finish the whole darn thing, god knows I have enough materials right now. So till next year my friends and enjoy the holidays.

Looks beautiful. I can't help but picture the huge mounds of scrap brass you must be left with after milling out that thing!
