Is it maybe a problem with the type of paper in your journal? Some paper does not absorb as well as other paper and some absorbs way more!

Just to see what would happen, I tried rubbing used coffee grind into a sheet of regular bond paper and it seemed to take on a brownish aged look okay (I'm sure you did not want to hear that though...). Without reading through all the posts, have you tried that yet?

No, I haven't yet. Im probably just going to leave the pages as they are for now though and get on with the rest of the journal. After a while the pages will weather on their own

worst case, you could mist some coffee onto the pages.
Spray the page, let it dry, and move on to the next...
most of the stains look like spilled and wiped coffee anyway and one page DEFINITELY has the ring from the bottom of a coffee cup.

That's what I'm saying too...the pages are just grungy and worn rather than "aged".

Yeah I always thought Darth's pages looked more yellow then my TV showed even if his journal looks great. Coffee here I come!

If you want something more yellow than tea would be used.
If you want something more like old newspaper than steel wool and vinegar.

I'm gonna be honest... this is from the one on my "betterrez" photobucket folder just cropped and enlarged.
It's the page from the end of the first game... the one Nathan finds in the Nazi compound.

Question d_jedi !!! What type of paper did you use on pg. 19-20 and did you print it out on that paper? I noticed you mentioned something like that in your youtube video.

I've used a couple of different paper types to see what looked best (to me).. hang on, I'll take some shots and show what I've used and how they turned out.
I'll edit photos into this once it's done.
Alrighty... these are the four types of paper I've tried out for the various pages

the three journals can all be bought at B&N or Amazon.. wherever. the stack of paper are the sheets from a photo album. I liked the texture and quality of them so I saved them for projects like this.

Alright.. so the paper I prefer for this is from the smaller brown journal.

Basically, I draw it in with a LIGHT pencil and then go over it with a fine-point sharpie. THEN I weather/age the paper with my instant coffee. I let it dry on an old, dark colored towel. I've found that method works best for ALL of these paper types.

Up next is a heavier paper from an old journal of my wife's.

This paper has a nice textural quality to it and REALLY takes to the coffee treatment. I just think the other paper looks better.

The last of the three journals is one I don't really recommend.

don't get me wrong.. it looks o.k. and has nice textural variations but it's tough to draw on, doesn't like to take the coffee treatment and, did I mention, is TOUGH TO DRAW ON!
If you take your time, you can still achieve some decent results.

Last up is the paper from the photo album. I LIKE this paper. I haven't used it for those pages in particular, but I would if I didn't have the brown journal.
I DO like them for the last pages from the german book.

oh, BTW. I didn't print any of it for those pages. I probably could have manipulated the pics to fit what I was using but I prefer to do it this way.. dunno, just old-school I guess.

Nice comparison of papers.

That first journal with the leather wrap is very similar to the one shown in the trailer for the new Tomb Raider game coming out next year.
It's missing the tooling on the edges.

When I picked up my journal I saw the one with the leather
strap so I will have to get one of those.

Don't forget that I'm using the pocket sized journal for mine so if you want to upsize like Darth Saber did, you may need to get the larger version of the brown one. (I don't know which size you're going for, just saying)

Ahhh yes this is true. I myself have one the size of Darth's ( Which I kinda wish i would have got a pocket sized one) so I might have to do some looking around.

Are you going to make one for Uncharted 3?

I WAS planning on doing a replica of Capelli's journal from Resistance 3 but since I see that the collector's edition of it COMES with a full replica of the journal, I'll just go that route (for the resistance 3 journal).

Fair enough... Hey have you seen that the Uk steel book version of Uncharted 3. Somewhere I saw they said it will have a few pages from his journal or something of the sort I can't remember but I found that to be pretty intriguing

nope, hadn't seen that.
Honestly, I didn't feel much like comparing regional exclusives once I saw the belt buckle and ring with the US edition.. if the UK or euro one does have those (pages), hopefully someone can get us some scans.
Know wat? I'm gonna go check amazon UK :lol now I HAVE to know. :lol
