Ultimate Spider-man Suit: WIP (Pictures and progress inside!)

A little late to the party in this thread, but everything here is extremely useful information. I have been designing my own Ben Reilly / spider-girl suit that I plan on sending out for soon, and this will all come in very handy!

I'm glad you found my posts helpful. Good luck on your build. It seems like a very creative route you took.

Great thread and some fantastic tips man. As a newbie to this forum Its amazing how much people are willing to help others with their own builds. I'll definitely be using some of your advise whilst building my suit.

Re: Classic Spider-man Suit: WIP (Pictures and questions inside!)

This is the extra separate mask I plan to wear when I feel like (e.g. work, at home, etc). It has a zipper at the back as well.

i use a seperate mask too, but i dont get it, why i always see this sewing failure with the one webline at the mask? the pattern fits perfectly as it is. theres no need to "reject" this line. i will post a pic when the eyes are ready.

and you are a lucky guy with your measure-style! ^^ think about you have used a screen size from a 55" tv... then 100% would have been much bigger than from a 19" screen! ;)

but: your suit and this tut is great work! thanks for that. i have to fight with my spidey shoes right now. ;)

How u do it without leaving this one line? Do u have a line left in the end or do u start with the 2nd line from the top?
Cause when u count the webbing lines there is one too much on the back.
I sewed 3 masks so far and know it :D

I'm glad you found my posts helpful. I tried my best to document the steps I took to build the suit. I wish you luck on your build. If you have questions that none of the other threads can answer, feel free to ask.

Since I didn't sew my own suit, I can't really say what causes the problem regarding the alignment. But from observing the suit while wearing it, it seems like it's difficult to align due to the stretch of the fabric. I think it's also challenging to align everything perfectly while sewing it because you have to stretch the fabric before sewing. Maybe people who have sewn their own suit will have more answer regarding this.

I can't remember for certain where I saw it, but I saw a diagram somewhere here on the forums that that extra web-line attaches to the suit somewhere around the shoulder or neckline. Although I'm not entirely certain.

Not Really An Update:
I haven't worked on my suit for a while because of real life stuff. But this weekend, I'll be attaching the soles using E6000. I'll also be wearing my mask tomorrow to work and walk around NY wearing it due to tomorrow being the release date for ASM2 movie.

And I'm still contemplating on making/buying an ASM1 faceshell. I've been thinking about this for a month! I like ASM1 lenses because I think it looks more fierce than my ASM2 faceshell/lenses. I like both and I want both!

Quick Update:

I couldn't help myself. I saved some money and will be ordering ASM1 lenses and ASM2 universal faceshell from TJAck. I will attach small magnets to the frames and faceshell. I'm curious to see how it will look like with my suit. I'll also be attaching the soles tomorrow so I can start wearing my suit outside!

I'm currently attaching the soles. I'm a little nervous about the process but it's necessary. I messed up a bit in terms of alignment. Good thing E6000 doesnt dry that fast. So I was able to realign a bit. But it's really gonna bother me that it's not perfect.

A word of advice, when standing up to apply pressure, make sure your weight is on your heels. This prevents you from sliding forward while waiting for the glue to dry.

Alright, so I failed attaching the shoes with E6000, lol... My alignment was off and the glue didn't seep all the way through the fabric. I'm not discouraged though. I'll try sewing the shoes and see if that works better.

Update Time!

So I went ahead and retried to attach the shoes. I followed pretty much Lunaman's process on attaching them. So if you want to see that, check out his build thread. However, I failed on attaching my soles properly. My alignment was off and the soles are peeling. (see pictures)

Failed attempt at gluing the soles.

Now if you remember on my other post regarding using a sewing awl to attach the shoe uppers to the insole, I noticed that I've gotten pretty good using a sewing awl. So I used the sewing awl to sew the soles to the fabric of the suit. (see pictures)

Yes, I have pretty sexy legs (ahem).

I used a black fine upholstery thread and a fine needle. I then carefully went around the soles. It's by no means perfect, but at least I don't worry about them falling out very easily (I hope).

Another thing you might have noticed is that the web-lines didn't go all the way under the soles. This is because the feet were too small. That's just how the pattern was when I resized it. It's because I'm too short for the pattern to be resized properly to my height and still be anatomically correct. There was nothing I can do about this. So to fix this, I will be drawing extra web-lines using Micron Pens. It's very easy to fix, so no worries there.

I'm only half way done on one shoe. I'll finish the other half later and glue the other sole. I expect this to be done by the weekend.

A problem I foresee is that because I needed to fold a bit of the fabric to sew the soles, the suit will even be smaller for me now. So to those who are doubting about their patterns being too big, I say it's better for it to be a little bit bigger than smaller. You can always build muscle to fill the suit, but you cannot magically make extra fabric appear once the suit is too small.

Shoes Update:

After spending 4 hours hand sewing one of the soles, I'm really proud of the results I achieved. I poked myself 3 times (thus the bandaid), but it was worth it.

It's by no means perfect, but given that this is my first suit and overall cosplay experience, I'm really happy with what I've achieved. The other sole is currently being attached. I'm just waiting 24hrs for the E6000 to dry. I'll start sewing it tomorrow once I'm satisfied on the soles placement. I'll take more pictures once both soles are completed.

Thanks for reading!
