Ultimate Spider-man Suit: WIP (Pictures and progress inside!)

Spectacular! Amazing!

I love the effort people put into helping others on this site. I will be doing the same thing in a few weeks and I'm shaking in my boots about cutting the mask! :)

Great tutorial on a question that gets asked a lot. I'm going to refer folks to your post here from now on.

Gorgeous gorgeous stuff.

I know it's a little self-serving, but hot DAMN am I proud of how those lenses came out. Really love finally seeing them on people's suits. Have a spectacular birthday!

Thanks, Lunaman. I basically took your advice and applied it and added pictures. I would be very lost without your guidance on this. And I've also noticed a lot of people asking how to poke the holes on their masks. Hopefully this tutorial helps people decrease those questions.

The lenses look really great on the suit. It's also very sturdy. I just need to buy a defogger and it should be good to go. I'm glad they came out really well too.

Thanks for the complement, IronJoe. I'm glad you found the tutorial helpful. Good luck on your build!

This looks incredible! Really liking how it looks and I think I'll be using my TJack's for my other suits since they look amazing even on this suit!
Thanks for the input on making the eyeholes! It has some really interesting and useful tips on how to make them!
Happy birthday as well!

Best of luck with the rest of your build,

Quick Update:

The soles aren't attached yet. I haven't done so because I'm still trying to figure out if the suit really fits me with the faceshell and underwear. And I have to be honest with myself here - it doesn't fit me as well as I hoped it would. First I thought it was going to be big, but it's tight and hard to put on, especially the mask with the faceshell. The mask is crawling up to the forehead but the faceshell's magnets helps keep them in place.

I may need to sell the sewn suit to build a larger sized one. This is still undecided because I really love this suit...

Anyway, here are some pics! (I know, the mask is a bit lopsided... I didn't notice until the pics were taken.)

Suit is looking fantastic my friend, and those lenses are fierce. Haha, I actually planned on using those same shoes, but because of the size I got, it made my feet look rather odd :lol. Love that you are adding a lot of step-by-steps to help people out, really awesome.

You sure it's too small? Maybe you are just getting used to wearing a suit like this? Because it looks like it fits pretty well, it may just be odd wearing something as tight as this. At least for my sake, and for yours as well, I hope you don't end up having to sell it, because if your print doesn't fit, that definitely means I probably need a bigger size too :unsure.

I put on a little too much muscle and bulk and stretch the shoulders of my suit like crazy, parts of it are almost pure white a times :cry, I'm hoping once I go over all the web lines, this'll be less noticeable. Anyway, good luck on attaching the soles, I have to do that soon as well.

Thanks for the compliments. I really appreciate them.

The suit does fit. However, any slight movement shifts the mask upwards. This indicates that the suit is being pulled down from the back heavily. I can barely move my head without the mask moving out of place. It's also very difficult to get in and out of - but this may be just me not used to putting it on yet. Also, moving stretches the fabric that the print fades a bit. I wish I did what Lunaman did with his suit (using Micron pens to reinforce the web lines) before having the suit sewn.

I will lose more weight and hopefully the suit gives me another chance to wear it. I really love it and it would be a shame to depart with it.

This is just an indication that you don't have enough stretch in the spine, not that the suit doesn't fit (do you have a mask zipper? That's often the culprit if you weren't fit in-person by your tailor or seamstress--they have to pre-stretch the fabric the right amount and use a long enough zipper when sewing that it, or it will pull the mask back on you. This is nearly impossible to nail perfectly without fitting you in-person). If it's a real problem you could look into getting the zipper replaced and allowing more stretch at the rear.

If you want the darker weblines, just darken them now. :) That's what I did (I didn't know I was gonna darken them until my suit was already sewn). I assure you it makes a big difference in whether the print looks 'washed out'.

The suits are always tough to put on, but you get better at it. Andrew Garfield needed 3 professional helpers and 20 minutes the first time he put one on. You're doing great, man.

Thanks, Lunaman. I will keep this in mind. I will contact TrophyWife after she's finished moving and see if she can adjust the mask zipper for me. I don't have a local seamstress that will be skilled enough in dealing with this suit.

As for the weblines, I am planning to one day darken them like you did. However, I'll hold off on it for now until the suit feels comfortable enough. I can totally see the difference with darker weblines. They make the suit pop-out a lot more, even at a distance.

The suit requires my wife's assistance to suit up. I can never put it on my own. Kudos to her for putting up with my shenanigans. It usually takes us about 30-45minutes to get everything lined up.

Thanks again for the advice. I will keep it in mind and further improve the suit. I'm really hesitant to depart with it because it's my first one.

Yea, man, I'd just like to see the project go well. :)

This is a single fastener and a single seam, it doesn't need to be shipped back to Trophywife for her expertise, and this issue is one that would need to be fit in person anyway. Any local tailor or seamstress who does alterations could help you.

Honestly, man, there is absolutely nothing in your photos or story that indicates that your suit isn't fitting you overall. You are perfectly welcome to re-size and re-attempt if things are uncomfortable, but I don't think it'll result in the next suit looking better. One problem that might be at work is the fact that human proportions don't scale linearly for people of different heights. The head still needs to be about as large on someone who is just over five feet as it is on someone who is just over six feet. So when you scale down the file, it's going to be disproportionately tight on the head when it fits the limbs fine.

Interesting stuff, that's for sure.

I agree with Lunaman, I printed the pattern used by everyone to my size (5"11') but still had to do a lot of modifications to it. This pattern is generic, meant to fit the average body type (or even meant to fit Toby's body I guess) but everybody's size is different, longer arms, shorter legs and stuff so in the end, you'll still have to fix the suit here and here.
Using a bit bigger pattern will maybe end with your suit having longer arms than yours with the whole thing fitting you better.
On my suit the mask tends to heads up too when I look down but I have a neck zippers so there's that.

Anyway, that's a killer suit definitilevy and god thoses lenses looks marvelous.. The bumpy effect looks just spot on !

Thanks for the encouragement and assurance. It makes me feel confident that we're heading the right direction. I'll try to find a local tailor/seamstress and try my best to explain to them what needs to be done.

Yeah, one of my worries when I was resizing the file was that the limbs might not come out right. But somehow they did came out almost perfect for my arms and legs. I posted a guide on how I resized the file on the first post of this thread. I hope people can reference to it later on if they're looking to resize their patterns.

The lenses are definitely awesome. It's a little hard to see through them though, even with a defogger. About 6/10 visual rate. It takes getting used to seeing in blur. But I think that goes a lot for most lenses.

Once the suit is complete, I'll visit the local school across the street and surprise the kids!

Repairs Update:
Under Lunaman's recommendation, I'm getting the suit's mask zipper altered/fixed tomorrow. I found tailor that might be able to fix my mask problem. I also have an extra longer zipper to replace the one that it has now. I just need to find a good way to explain to them what I wanted done. I hope they don't ask me to suit up because it takes such a long time to do so.

To reiterate the issue: the mask is crawling up my forehead when wearing the suit. Any movement of the head tends to pull it backwards (making the eye holes go up in between my eyebrows). This can be caused by the mask zipper not stretched enough before sewing (Thanks, Lunaman, for the info).

On that note, here's a picture of the extra mask with TJack's Faceshell:
Spider-man MaskResized.jpg

I test fitted it for a few hours to see how sturdy it was. The lenses fell off because the magnets on the lenses got detached. I reattached them by using a glue gun. I also noticed that one of the magnets was not aligned properly to sit on its partner magnet on the faceshell. So I'm going to realign that too.

How did you glue the eyes onto the mask? Because I've looked at foam heads, foam balls, and they both are too small cause of my head size. I was thinking to use my Captain America shield cause it has the right amount of curve. The way I was planning was to put the mask on, mark the edges of the eyes on the mask, then tape the mask (stretched out so the lenses match the markings) onto the shield and glue. If there's any way that seems easier that you have done, please let me know?!

Thanks for the question.

I'm using TJack's faceshell and lenses combo. The lenses have rare earth magnets that attaches to the faceshell. The faceshell and lenses came ready to wear, so I didn't really have to do any shaping. But if you want to learn how to shape the lenses, Lunaman's build thread has very clear instructions on how to do it.

Although a faceshell is not necessarily needed to shape the lenses, I highly advice getting one for a more accurate shape. Also, I advice getting a Styrofoam head like this one Amazon.com: Case Pack of 1 Giell Styrofoam Foam Mannequin Wig Head Display Male White: Beauty. You can mount the faceshell on that head and shape the lenses accordingly without much difficulty.

What type of lenses did you get? TJack's lenses become bendable when a little heat is applied to them. That allows them to be shaped easily. I really suggest looking at the first page of Lunaman's build thread for shaping and gluing the lenses.

Wow, just Awesome! The Suit, the mask, everything. I love the comic spider on the back of the suit as well. Hopefully when I put one together it will as cool as yours. That's the look I want. I got plenty of notes and contacts from your thread to help me along when I start. Thanks so much for sharing..

Thanks for the compliments, man. It's all thanks to the artisans that are good at what they do (TJack, TrophyWife, Orhadar) and advice from people that have gone down the same path (Lunaman, Equinox). I barely put together the stuff they created and added a bit of creativity to it. I'm very certain you can get the same suit if you put the time and effort to it. Hell, I'm sure you can build an even better one!

I'm glad that you found my posts helpful. That was my intention when I started this build thread - to show how I created the suit and what works and what doesn't. I'm always happy to see someone finding information on this thread. I think that's the essence of this forums in the first place.

Good luck on your build!

NICE suit man!

Thanks, man! I'm glad you liked it.

Sewing/Repair Update:

Under Lunaman's suggestion, the suit's mask zipper has been repaired! I requested the seamstress to stretch the fabric 2 inches before sewing the invisible zipper. Now it doesn't crawl up to my forehead as much as it used to. And it fits better! It was a very easy repair, so there was no need for me to panic... but that's my nature (lol).

Fitness Update:

As I've stated on my past posts before, I'm working on losing weight to fit the suit better. I have recently started running again. I'm also lifting light weights to help build lean muscles. I'm following the workouts Aarow Wolfhart posted.

Here's a full body picture. Sorry about the lighting quality. As you can see, the suit fits but it bulges on some spots.

Random:

I've been imagining how the suit will look like with ASM1 faceshell and lenses. I've been eyeballing in purchasing McL34N or JoeLai's ASM1 faceshell and lenses but there seems to be no point in having two lenses and faceshells other than wanting to have them. Or having a backup in case of a malfunction.
