Hey guys! I have a little bit of exciting news! First of all, ALL credit for this discovery goes to our very own
thd9791, as he is the one with the eagle eyes who spotted this and brought it to my attention. I seriously don't think I would have EVER seen this but at the same time I have no idea how nobody has spotted this before! We have new information about the control box! Before the ESB pick-up shot, we had such poor reference of the Holiday Special lightsaber and what the control box looked like. Thanks to that now infamous photo of the stunt guy in the X-Wing uniform filming a pick-up shot of Luke riding the tow cable up to the AT-AT we got a better look at that control box, and I was able to make more accurate version of it.
Since then, I remained hopeful that we'd identify what that part was, but I have to admit I was looking in the WRONG direction.
Fast forward to a few days ago and
thd9791 sends me a curious message having to do with none other than Al Roker! LOL
WOW! sure enough, many years ago on Today, they did a Star Wars themed episode and Al was apparently loaned some real props from Han Solo's costume to wear for the taping. Included in these pieces was Han's belt with a strange looking alternate version of the droid caller. The droid caller had a VERY familiar looking piece attached to it. I couldn't believe my eyes! I immediately dove head first into an image search trying to find every photo I could of that episode, as well as trying to find out where that costume piece came from.
It has been staring us in the face this whole time. It's even posted on the old partsofsw.com site as an alternate droid caller for Han during ROTJ with an "unidentified" box attached to it. Apparently, some time after that pick-up shot in ESB, that illusive control box was stripped off what was left of the Holiday Special and attached to Han's droid caller. I have yet to go through the film to see if it's on screen, but this very prop has been making the rounds as part of the Star Wars Identities and Power of the Costume museum exhibits for years.
It has proved quite difficult to find clear images of it as it is tucked away behind the mannequin's left arm. So only someone who walked around to the side of the display case and zoomed in would be able to get a shot of it. The only way it's visible when Al Roker was wearing it is that he put the belt on backwards!
Anyway, onto the box itself! While I did get it somewhat close, based on what photos we had of it at the time, the real box looks MUCH different than we thought. First off I no longer believe that it is any kind of circuit breaker or safety switch. The top plate is separate from the box and is actually covered in FINS like some kind of heat sync or something. There are 10 fins running along the top of it. some fins are cut short to allow the screws to hold the top plate on, and others have a section cut out somewhere in the center to allow for the center button which now appears to be a transistor very similar to the ones found on Obi-Wan's lightsaber.
Here are some of the photos I found from various sources.

Anyway, you can see here that there are 10 fins. 3 short, three long, then 4 short so it is NOT symmetrical. The "button" or transistor is not centered vertically. It's just below the first long fin and cuts into the first of the 4 short fins.
After studying all available images, building an updated 3D model and printing out a couple of prototypes, I think I have it pretty well dialed in.
It matches up to ALL the available Holiday special photos we have and even answers some of the anomalies where the photos didn't match up with my previous version like why you can sometimes see the button and sometimes not (The button is just flush with the fins and the long fin will cover it if turned a certain way.
Here's the rough print prototype on my Kobold flash to verify proportions
I have since fixed a couple of measurements and am printing a second prototype. Once finished, I will redo the chrome decals and apply it to my graflite for some updated photos and for critiquing.
If anyone has any high resolution photos of this droid caller, PLEASE send them to me so I can verify and update details as they come available.
I will probably do an updated control box run but I want to make sure we have all the latest info. I know this prop is on tour and was last seen in Tokyo through January but I haven't been able to find any more information on where the next stop is, if there even is one. Any and all information is greatly appreciated.
Thanks for taking the time to read my ramblings! and Thanks again Tom for spotting this and alerting me!!
