TRON/RINZLER armor costume.

so tonight im going to cover the armor in glue and maybe cut out the last piece of the chesrt armor. but anyway heres a picture of the ID disc. its just the sam disc replaced with the Kevin disc's outside rim. it looks alot cooler, but does anyone know a way to make it where the lights stay on without having to replace the lights.

Awesome! That turned out really great! If you don't mind me asking, how much was the foam you used? And how big of sheets are they when you buy them? I'm looking to do a Tron costume as well for this Halloween, and am thinking the foam will be best for sculpting the armor. I also plan on spraying Plasti Dip over the top of it for the rubber look.

i would suggest making a full body body suit or if you dont mind waiting ordering one
what kind of full body suit? and if your talking about the hexagon one, i was going to but since i switched over to the comic book style of tron, the suit looks completley different than the one in the movie so i might be using a different hexagon pattern.

thanks! yes that is what im planning on doing too. i would say that the best thing to do would be foam. but, that depends on the look your wanting. im making the tron betrayal armor which is the comic book kind so its alot easier to do it with foam. if your wanting like the armor that the black gaurds have or that sam has, something complicated like that, i wouldnt use foam for all of it. the tron betrayal armor, since it is from the comic, is one of the easiest to make. foam cost about 89 cents for one sheet and it comes in about two different sizes. theres like a 1 1/2 foot long, and then theres a like 9 inch kind. they both work realy well though depending on how big it has to be, but im sure if you needed it bigger, you could get it bigger online. be very careful with the plastidip though because it can be very toxic if your not wearing a mask!
thanks for the comment!

Awesome. This is some great info. Thanks for the advise! I'm very new to this whole process, so I'm going to have a lot of trial and error! I'll send you photo's once I start the design process. Again, really good idea combining the kevin flynn and sam flynn data disks, so you get a brighter light on the edge. Very impressive!

just a nylon Lycra one

but if you prefer to make your self its no too daunting
well, i dont like how tight the lycra suit is, but ive got a plan for my shirt. its kind of like an athletic material that looks close to the type in the comic, and the pants im not sure about. i know im going to have to have them very armored up so i might get some tighter athletic pants.

you want it to be loose?

Has anyone looked into doing a rubber or latex molded armor? Like the stuff they use to make masks and appliances for the movie industry? I have made a few latex appliances in the past, but I am currently looking into buying a mannequin, and sculpting the armor onto it with clay, then coating that in a 2mm coat of foam latex. Once it's cured and powdered (so it doesn't stick to itself when removed from the mannequin) it will be hollow. That will mean a foam filler will have to be glued in to give it structural integrity... but that's easy. You wouldn't need much, as the contours aren't huge...they're just to give the armor aerodynamic lines. So then you glue it to your suit, paint it with Plastidip, and start working on installing your EL wire/tape/sheets. What do you think?

sounds like a great idea but, since this armor is supposed to be kinda flat, it probaly wouldnt work for this one. clu's or rinzler's armor yes it might work for, but not tron's.

If you're talking about Silicone Encased LED strips, here is a good site for those...

Only problem is that this site doesn't have them in orange.
Silicone Encased LED Strips - Ribbon Thin, Waterproof & Flexible

And I'm looking at eventually making a blackguard costume and noticed in one picture that their lighting looked more red than orange. In every other pic and the movie the color was more orange, but was the intended color red? Or should I just stick with orange?

This is a great find! Thanks! I think this is just what I was looking for for my costume! I plan to use an orange film over them with frost spray on the back to diffuse the light to give it that EL tape look without need for an multiple battery packs and/or inverters. Plus it looks a lot more flexible than the EL tape!

I don't know. Hmm. I know Rinzler's suit is different than Tron's, but doesn't Tron's suit have 3D elements to it? Like these:

he has them but they are slightly different. like the back i dont remember ever seeing the spikes like that. and the squares on the arms are a little different. i think i recall seeing them a little smaller, squarer, and maybe flatter. i think when they designed rinzler they made him a little more "spikey" then tron so you could tell he was evil.

First off good job on the progress RINZLERTRON!

I have been watching this thread for a while now and since Rez brought it up id like to share with you my plan on my own Rinzler costume. I plan on buying sheets of rubber and cutting them out to fit my body then using a heat gun, form fit them to my body. I am then going to get some of the hex fabric and sew the rubber straight onto the fabric. I already have EL-Tape on order for the lights and will pretty much use them under cut outs of the armor where they are and covering the rest of it with Gaff tape so they don't leak light.

The helmet i will make out of clay on a mannequin head and then vacum-forming it with acrylic plastic and tinting. The disks (yes there will be two that interlock) will be made out of clay then molded and casted in halves so i can work on electrical while still having molds in case something breaks.

My materials and tools will cost around $800 for my suit to be complete.

Good luck on your suit and all the best wishes for your costuming!

Actually, silicone caulk would be better, but heavier, as it would retain the flexibility without becoming subject to creases and crinkling that foam would likely allow.

sounds like a good idea! the only thing im wondering is do clay, gaff tape, rubber, fabric, and paint realy add up to 800 dollars? the other thing i would be concerned about is the spikey parts on rinzlers armor, would those be made with rubber as well?
