My white robes are well on their way. I am even making the correct bracelets he wears after much searching. But I am also building Flynn's Hideout room as well. I got a good start on it the other day and did my first lighting test last night. Here is a link to some pictures. More are on my Facebook.

It's wonderful to see that I'm not the only one wanting to do the black robes! I'm thinking of eventually doing them with the hood, because I can see that being a fun costume to wear at Dragon*Con After Dark! Is anyone getting the white disc and painting it black? I've heard that the sound effects are different for it, deeper, like in the movie.

Ok well here is a simple cool robe that flynn wears

It's basically a black robe with a hood and then the lights are just light strips around the edge of the robes(hands, hood, bottom, middle)

Looks like a easy one to pull off! and looks great!

heck I'd wear that around the house

Has anyone thought of doing the robes Sam uses to disguise himself on his way to Castor? They would make a good addition to any Tron Legacy costume imo

Can't find the video again but there was a short clip with the costume designer and she was talking about the materials used. She advised that every fabric they used was actually synthetic! I want to say she described Flynn's inner robe as being a polyester that just looked like it was linen. It's a pretty great effect but I'm sure it was probably all custom manufactured.

I'm with CalaveraJoe. Being a "full figured" woman there was no way you'd get me in to an all spandex and rubber suit. ^_^ I think the robe approach is more suited to my style anyway. As I'm not planning an exact replica of the outfit I can play with it a bit.

I wanted to share the attached image because it shows off the design on the back of Flynn's robe. Being from the video game it is likely not 100% accurate but it shows structurally the lines and slits better.

Is there a decent source for wider EL tape out there? All of the stuff I have on hand is a bit narrow and I'd rather have 1 1/2 inch or 2 inch wide strips to start with than double up and try to conceal the line. I'd really like to just get a spool of the wide stuff and wire it up myself.

Here's a link to an interview with the costume designer (possibly the one you mentioned)
Rundown: Main TRON suits are made of a foam latex, lights are Electrified Light Tape (he technical name being "polymer-based elastomeric electro luminescent lamp"), and Flynn's outfits are described as being "organic" in look and feel, though no mention of the fabrics used.
Tron Legacy Costume Designer Christine Clark

here's a typed interview with her
'Tron: Legacy' costume designer talks light-up suits, pixie hairdos and Spanx | All The Rage | Los Angeles Times

she mentions that Flynn's costumes are all polyester.

Okay I had another random brainstorm. I'm considering including two colors of EL Wire in my costume that I can flip between; in this case white and orange.

I know folks that have used the Netduino controller for Identity Disc mods and those dealt mostly with LEDs.

Any more electronic savvy folks out there that could advise me on if that controller could handle the dimming and flickering of EL Wire without damaging the wire or controller?

I got a request from my best friend for this robe. as his birthday is approaching, I'd like to make it for him.

I'm confused though, on where to get the light tape. I've got some good screen caps and can get the fabric that best replicates what is in the images, but could use some help on the tape.

thanks much in advance!

has there been a pattern that is decided on for the robes? I am interested in finding the pattern (and or a seamstress) for this project. I am sure I can handle the electronics, but put me behind a sewing machine and I would end up with my fingers sewn together.

anyone?

Any robe pattern could probably be used or adjusted for the outer part. And a Kimono/Yukata pattern for the inner part or even a Jinbei pattern if you could find one.

If you can find a seamstress that makes martial arts uniforms or Jedi/Sith costumes I'm sure they would be able to do these robes. Personally I'm consulting the lady that made my Sith costume a few years ago to help me out.

I have some bad quality screenshots of the robe/cape Sam wears when he goes to the end of line club:

I might try to make it if I have time. It looks like a full robe with its own lights, so might be an easier project than the spadex stuff. Plus it looks like Tron Jedi, so double fangasm.

I'll be sure to make better screencaps when it comes out on DVD

On the TRON: Legacy Costume Planning thread, several of the posters have purchased EL tape from this place, Large Electroluminescent Panels and Strip Lamps - LED Panels - LUMINOUSFILM.COM --USA, as they have 2 inch wide and wider EL tape. From all accounts, it also seems to be very bright and of better quality than a lot of the other EL tapes out there.

Also, I noticed on the TRON: Evolution pic of Flynn's black robe, there is a "circuitry" pattern on the back that is identical to the one on the white robe. Also, I noticed that there is a similar "circuitry" pattern on the top side of the sleeves at the wrists on both the black and white robes. It might be neat to light those "circuitry" patterns up with EL tape, although then it wouldn't be screen accurate. But it would still look cool! :)

anyone know a good seamstress that makes jedi robes? I would really like to outsource the robes for this project. I have a few others in the works as well.

TIA!

Hi all, new guy here.

Anyone had any progress on this. I'm amazed at how few 'hooded over coats' // 'hooded trench coats' there are. Would love it if someone could point me in the right direction.

I'm in the process of modifying a Ghi pattern I found to suit these robes. The more I have looked at the movie, the more I recognize that the hood in Kevin's robe is removable. Thanks to looking at some stand alone hoods from Plastik Wrap, I have a good idea on how to make them independent from the robes themselves.

Also from somewhat reverse engineering my Lululemon hoodie, I have a basic pattern for the hood and I've done a rough mock-up of the hood in plain cotton.

Plan to make two of these robes/hoodies for myself and my boyfriend for D*C this year.
