Tron Legacy Costume

Interesting option, I have sent an email asking if this comes in white for 1 and 3 inch dimensions. This actually might work out well if it does. Good find.

Keep us informed Dando. This could be the answer to MANY issues a bunch of us have been throwing around over here.

I received a bunch of red el tape from glowhut today for my kid's SDCC costume and I am not impressed.
It's basically white EL with a colored plastic coating over it. Does not transmit light well and shows pink when on. I'm going to rip off the red plastic and try using red lighting gels instead.
Why can't my kid be a blue or white program?!??

This looks like what I want wish it said what width these are? The description is blank.

I stopped by on my way home(there's one by my office) and measured the tape.
I's 3/4" wide and 1/2" between the embossed lines. So you can trim it to 1/2". No idea how long it is either, but I guess 3'.

I wonder what it looks like during the day though. If it glows a bit it could be perfect...if not.

Also just wanted to direct everyone to this

I am seriously tempted to order one in medium or so. From the description it sounds like it might have that really nice fitted look I have been looking for.

You can try brake light tape. Get the translucent type and its already adhesive.
Buy the Victor Automotive Products V308 Brake Light Repair Tape, 2 X 60 inches. at Hardware World

Finished the top vest portion of my Tron Sam Flynn costume. Made from a large sheet of neoprene, white shower curtain, 1/2 inch weather stripping, and white LED strips.

That is AMAZINGLY bright! Awesome that it worked well for you. Where'd you hide the power pack, what types of batteries, and how long do they last (if you've done a test)? It's cool to see someone else going with the LED method mentioned pages back. I don't remember ever seeing any pictures from that idea / post.

Solar

I don't have a power pack mounted yet, still deciding on where I want to put it. As you can see in the second pic, I have it plugged into a 3s 2200 mAH Lipo battery in my back pocket. I want to use this type of battery since it provides the 12V max that the LED can take and can have high capacities.

Wow, it looks amazing! it makes me wish I weren't scammed by chinese Ebay sellers u__u I firstly bought a 5m led strip that never arrived and the @#&% never answered D:

A single layer of shower curtain hid the dotting? is there a distance between the curtain and the leds? dammit, I want my leds so bad now!

Yes, I used the 1/2 inch weather stripping to make the distance between the led's and the shower curtain. You can't tell in the pics but you can kinda see the led's but. it is diffused be cause of the distance. The led's are stuck to poster board backing with the weather sstripping around the edges. I love the way it turned out. I get my led's from hobbyking.com.

Hi all, just wanted to give an update on how my build is going. Thanks for this wonderful thread as it has helped me in so many ways and I hope I can help others as well.

I decided to go with the EL Tape from Luminous Film and Velcro route.

I sewed the prickly half of the velcro to the hoodie and glued the other half onto the EL Tape with E-600. I found that the easiest way to cut the EL Tape was with an exacto knife. I used masking tape to hold down the EL Tape while cutting it on top of a cutting board. To connect the EL Tape to the inverter, I used eyelets that I also bought from Luminous Film. I used a nail and hammer to make the holes for the eyelets and pounded them into place and covered them with E-600 just to be safe.

Here are some pics:

Wow dude, a most impressive application of LED technology, glad I'm not the only one so far who has pulled it off. As for those who are saying "wow thats bright, any more pics" I'll post some pics of my application again, since it really is that bright in a room.

I approached this with detacheable strips of lighting, in a modular fashion. I REALLY like your idea, making it part of one assembly you can easily put on and take off, not as easily transported due to size but much sturdier. I'm planning on making some armor suit for my girlfriend for a con in September, I think I'll try your method. But....can you post some pics of how you put the LED portions together? YOu say you used weather stripping to create spacing, but I can't quite envision what you are talking about. Good job!

First of all, thanks for the kind words. Second, I'll try to answer your questions with the pics below....

Here is the vest. You can see on right the neoprene is solid and on the left I cut it open to allow me to put it on.

Here are the velcro strips I added to seal it when on.
IMG_2009.jpg

Here, you can see the poster board backing that the LED strips are attached to. Also, the cardboard backing plate that holds my disc mount on.

Here is what I was talking about with the 1/2 inch weather stripping. I outlined the shower curtain cutout with the 1/2 inch weather stripping, then glued the poster board with the LED strips on top of it. This greatly reduces the hotspots from the LED strips. OH, I also put Aluminum tape on the poster board under the LED strips.

Here it is on, without the velcro secured.

Just wanted to give everyone a heads up. The Target store in my area finally put the Tron disks on clearance. Appx. $9.75 after sales tax, so it might not hurt to check your local stores as well.
