Tron Legacy Costume

Hey everyone, new to the thread. Been reading loads of great ideas and techniques. Thank you all for sharing and being so helpful.

After seeing the new movie (loved it!) and knowing that I am all about costuming to my body type, I'm going to make a Castor.

I'm not that tall, thin, have a high forehead and narrow chin.

Anyway, was wondering what you all think about the material for his suit and also what would be the best method to make that chest plate thing?

Looking forward to costuming with any or all of you in the future!!

Hi again,

I'd like to share something with you guys, my costume is not done yet for a reason.
I'm not satisfied until I know almost everything about something I want to do before I do it.
Don't get me wrong, your costumes really rock and I don't know if I could replicate them.
But I always look a step beyond and I'm never satisfied.

I'm looking for some other new things and though I don't like to show anything since I'm not done yet, there must be someone out there more clever than me that might help.

In the picture, a PVC flexible strip with a single led pointed at. A first step that I'm investigating this days.
In real life, the led shows half bright, the strips remains the same.

I'm actually working on the same thing running thick clear vinyl only I'm using SMD LED strips down the edges as well to make it very bright. They sell super thin SMD LED strips at PepBoys in the car neon section so you can see just how thick they are and how bright they can be. But dont buy any quantity of stuff from them! Too expensive...

Wow such great work guys! So cool, I want to make one right now. Movie is way to good, so nice and fun to have such a great groupe of fans all together!

I'm working on blackfeathers mod 3 right now, only doing it a little differently. We will see what happens got half of the leds good havent started on the other much but when i connect r7 to r3 r4 r5 r6.. r3- r6 work then r7 is dim. im imagining its because i havent grounded it to the negative yet

well, from what i have seen, i would assume, that the chest plate is a vest like piece that is done up from the back , and the coat is just... well, a coat

i highly recommend reading over this whole thread. take a few days, its worth it. you will learn so much, ive already knocked about 100-200 dollars off my costume just by seeing what others have done and improvising. so its pretty sweet.

Just got on here and caught up from page 62.

I was in a horrible car rollover accident Sunday morning. Roads were wet, all of a sudden my car spun out of control on the city streets and flipped upside down. My boyfriend Tom was in the car with me, we survived with no injuries. I also managed NOT to hit any other cars or any one else while we spun out and landed. *****! What a ****ty way to end the awesome Tron weekend. My car is totalled but at least me and my guy are alive. I can not believe all of this.

Anyway, loving all the photos and want to post some of my own and some my friend Kevin took of the group for me. Will post soon. Have had alot of my mind as you can imagine.

Glad to hear your okay! I've read so many of your posts I feel like I know you, haha. Yes the rain can be a pain. I have to be very gentle on my gas other wise I spin out. Get some rest!

thanks. it's downloadable now. done.

saw tron legacy last monday and wednesday. you catch more detail in the design aesthetics the more times you see it. :)

Thanks Blackfeathers! Perfect! Going to download Siren pics now ;)

Oh....my...word...the movie was AMAZING! I'm definitely going back first chance I get to see it again. I was thoroughly impressed. It truly felt like Tron. :)

Sadly, I've had to put my Quorra costume on the backburner. My dad's decent salary got cut by 70% and my work hours got cut by 50%, so right now we're having a hard time paying for groceries. :unsure I'm still going to keep my original deadline of having my Quorra costume finished by September for Dragoncon (anyone here coming? :D)

Does anyone have any ideas on how in the world to make Quorra's costume from the hips up? (Sadly, I don't sew nor do I know anyone who has worked with latex.)

I got my gloves for the costume....only to find they don't fit! Is there a good glove pattern out there? I can't seem to find any sort of storebought gloves to work for this costume.

Now that my Quorra costume is completed. I can custom make a bodysuit for you. If you want the HEX print for the upperbody torso and above the elbows, talk to Soulternia. We can hopefully work something out and he can send the fabric back to me and I will sew it up for you. Send me a PM. We actually spoke about working together to custom make the Quorra under bodysuit for the public. His HEX print and my black vinyl matte spandex and I sew up the suits.

I know this may seem like an odd question but how tall is Annisse? She looks like an Amazon in that photo! *thumbs up*

Yes. I am a tall one ;) about 5'11 bare feet. My Quorra boots are about 5 inches tall.

... If it hadn't rained I know we would've all went to the billboard sign, clubbing, and do more crazy stuff, but for compass, know that we in LA often stay out late and party, but we don't like rain.

HAHA I whole heartedly agree on the partying, was planning on a wild night out. I am very bummed the rain ruined our trip to the TRON sign on Sunset. :(

I used EL tape and EL film on the dress, plus LEDs to make the tulle glow. EL wire on the shoes.

Jinyo so you used EL TAPE and FILM? by Film do you mean Light Tape? or what type of film do you mean? I have not heard of EL film. I bet that stuff was expensive. What widths of El Tape/Film did you use as well?

and the detailing of Victoria's dress is amazing! The sequins and what looks like a textured print. Didn't notice your different uses of fabric until you posted a close up photo. Always admired you guys work!

I seriously cannot stop oogling this. I can't even put in to words how much I LOVE that creation. It is IMPECCABLE. So imaginative and perfectly executed! Your work is phenomenal and I hope you post more of it or like it! So amazing... I don't know how it's still in progress! It looks flawless as it is!

I agree, his dress is flawless and incredible unique work, but as a costumer designer, your work is never done or perfect. We always want everything we do to be flawless. Perfectionism at it's best ;)

Oh and how can I forget to mention.... movie was beyond INCREDIBLE! I can't wait to see it again at the El Capitan theater.

I want to organize another gathering to see when everyone in LA can get together for this. Was thinking after the holidays, maybe Friday January 7th? I am only off work Wed. thru Fridays in January. Definately don't want to wait past January, don't know how long it will stay at the theater.

and maybe if this rain would ever stop, a trip to the TRON sign on Sunset. Wanna do this after Christmas on a weekday night so will try and go next Wed. the 29th or 30th. Who knows how much longer the sign will stay there since the movie is out already. Don't want to miss out on a shoot there.

Thank you! Yeah all good now. Just in shock and a little sad I lost my car I had for 13 years. :(

I'm thinking the best way to use the SMD Leds, they are very tricky to solder...I'm still thinking about it. I might use two or three regular Leds, much more easy to manage.
But I have found that vinyl does not conduct the light as good as PVC, but I can be wrong, does it work for you?

without knowing the full effect of what you plan on doing, i assume you're figuring our a way for the led to light up the pvc?

have you tried sanding the pvc to a scuff-frost finish to see if a brighter or more uniform effect can be produced? or would the sanding take away from a clean and clear look?

in the past i've sanded acrylic to a frost finish to get a more luminuous glow -especially to get an edge lighting effect. it works well to contrast it with a clear flat surface to give an outline. polishing it clear has an opposite effect but makes it look more glossy or glass-y.

Yes, this is what I'm trying to do. I'm not looking for the glass effect, but I can't do anything about it...
I tried to sand one face of the PVC and yes, it becomes really really bright. Indeed, a lot.
But somehow, this steals light along the strip. Without sanding, the light goes trought almost 60cm with a low dimming effect. Sanding makes the light stop at about 35 cm.
I have to try painting it.
Still thinking about this...maybe I won't work, but it's worth the try.

Oh, man! I'm glad you are both OK, Anisse. What a fright.
Any accident that you can walk home is the best you can have. I know...

This been said...don't tell me you have lost your DeLorean.

Soldering SMDs is a pain but they make solder paste that works quite well for this

No, not the Delorean thank God! But my Honda of 13 years. Very hard to have to say goodbye to it in the 5 mins. they gave me at the tow yard. It was a complete loss.

Oh my goodness! I'm glad to hear that you're alright Annisse (quite a bang-out way to end a Tron weekend. Gotta go out in style, right? :cool). I've hydroplaned before, so I can only imagine how much worse actually flipping over would be. But again, I'm very glad that you and your man are safe and sound!

Thanks for the bodysuit offer, I will definitely keep that in mind. I'm in talks right now with Soulinertia for that screenprint. So we'll see what happens there.

5'11", huh? Lucky Amazon! Ah well, I'm an inch taller than Olivia Wilde so I'll stick with that. :p

Btw, what do you guys think about using silicone to do the armour? (I know the original was foam latex, but I'm wondering if doing a silicone armour - like they crafted Christian Bale's Batman armour out of - would work.)

Glad to hear all is well, for the living beings at least, Annisse. Maybe it was the ghost of Sam and his bike stunts that took offense to your driving a car and not a cycle?

Glad to hear you are both ok Annissë! Can't wait to see some more detailed pics of your finished costume!

I might have missed this in the amazing amount of great details here, but where did you pick up your flexible pvc. Im thinking of starting tests myself and like that idea.
