Tron Legacy Costume

I must say, after fervently reading this thread from the beginning... I am now convinced that I have to do a costume based on the Tron world for SDCC.

I'm actually going to deviate from the Legacy world, and going into the Kingdom Hearts world. I'm cosplaying one of the Organization members (think trenchcoat) as a few of my other friends are cosplaying from the Space Paranoids world. We're fusing the two types of costumes together.

We'll be following the colour scheme from Legacy - the hero will be white, his sidekicks (Donald, Goofy, some other characters) will be blue/green depending on what their role is (i.e. Donald - blue, Goofy - green). Currently, I'm debating on Larxene as a virus type... or the Clu 2 colour. However, the character I'm portraying is a lackey so I'm thinking that orange would be the way to go for me.

My group is trying to do a mockup of how to wire the costumes, and measure out everything.

Also... my kid brother had a toy helmet that changed your voice when you talk. Currently debating on taking out that feature and reapplying it to my helmet, as people who were talking in their helmet had the voice distortion. Luckily, one of the other people in my group is an electrician so he's going to be doing all the wiring. ;D

Geez, looks like fun! I tried to make it, but the rain + trying to come up with a half-assed costume at the last minute + traffic, it didn't happen. When's the next TRON get-together? 8) Is there an official TRON costuming group, like the 501st ro Ghsotbusters or something? I definitely see that in the future...

Now to wade through the last (Good Lord) 63 or so pages to see what you guys decided was the best method of lighting up the costumes... I've got some ideas, plus if I can lose another 35-40 lbs by next SDCC, I'll work on my own gladiator costume...

Hey Eric! Tron cosplay, always epic. Reflective tape is the cheapest and quickest way, but light up will burn a hole in your wallet. I plan to do light up when I have the time. But Yeah we need to set up a daft punk tron rave. Cosplayer who light up get in free. Or at least another elecTRONica meet!

Went back home for christmas and to visit my parents. They took this photo after I came back from Tron (which was amaaazing, visually)~~

And I didn't realize that the helmet was cut off. I'll take separate photos of it and upload later.

Also my sleeves were slipping down, needed to reinforce it on the glove.

Hey all, I'm new to this site.
I've been lurking around reading your posts and I was wondering the best way to work with all the EL wire and tape. I would look around more but it's too hard to find all of the information.

My girlfriend and I went to the El Capitan in Hollywood. We like to see Disney movies there, because it's the Disney theatre. Plus, I'm a fan of theatres where you can choose your seats beforehand, laser light shows, and souvenir Tron popcorn buckets. And it's adjacent to a little shop/cafe where they had a bunch of Tron merch, including a couple of shirts and pins I haven't seen elsewhere.

Here's the dress I made for my girlfriend to wear. It's a party dress I imagine Quorra would wear. It's still a work in progress, this is what I got done in time for the movie.

I seriously cannot stop oogling this. I can't even put in to words how much I LOVE that creation. It is IMPECCABLE. So imaginative and perfectly executed! Your work is phenomenal and I hope you post more of it or like it! So amazing... I don't know how it's still in progress! It looks flawless as it is!

Hey guys! We went to the Tron Legacy premier night here in Malaysia in our finished Daft Punk,Tron Legacy costumes! Now with 100% more reflective tape and lights!

No good pics of us at the premier, but we dropped in on an anime convention after that, and we got some good shots from it.

I know I'm late jumping on this thread, but better late than never, right? Now that i've seent he movie, I'm inspired to make my own costume, so now it's time to start wading through the posts for the best methods... /sigh - it's like making my Mando armor all over again...

ANYWAY, I found this on eBay - is this the EL tape everyone's been talking about, or is this something else?

Jedi B, That is EL Tape that everyone keeps referring to BUT, you've gotta be careful and look at the type of power supply it runs off of. This one you found (which I found as well in my travails) runs off of a stationary powersource as it has a Inverter that converts 12V to 90V for use with Airplane Cockpit power plugs. Normally, you can carry around an inverter that can run up to 50FT of EL Wire, but keep in mind it will then have to be converted for the Amount of EL Tape (considering all the square inches). For this one's inverter It looks like the adapter to 90V may be permanent, and you'd have to resolder it, which is fine, but I gaurantee you'll need instructions on it. Ask Actordiver or Compass72 more about this stuff, as it is what they used on their costumes.

Sheep girl, your costume looks awesome. When you retake pics, I hope there's a brighter lit photo so we can discern the details of the costume itself. The lighting also looks good, how did you go about that portion of it?

Hey guys this has been an awesome thread I've only gotten to read through the first like 20 pages of it though, and then skipped to the last page since I'm supposed to be studying for finals not browsing the internet. Sorry for not reading it all but for those of you that went through with your costumes did you figure out ant viable solutions for lighting your costumes besides reflective tape?

On another note the movie lived up to everything I was expecting but the thing the astonished me the most about this movie was the costume and set design it was just amazing. I know the Quorra and Sam Flynn outfits were awesome but I thought many of the more realistic articles of clothing were just as great for example the Kevin Flynn robes, and the leather jacket hes shown wearing in flashbacks.

The reason I ask about lighting solutions is that the project I would like to pursue is the leather jacket that Kevin Flynn and CLU are shown wearing in the flash back sequence with the single column of blue light on the inside/zipper portion of one side of the jacket. (I think their socks glowed too ha) So I've come here to ask if anyone has any screens of this particular piece of clothing if so I would greatly appreciate them because I have been unable to find them online yet. Second I would value any input you have for this project as I intend to pursue a path that will allow it to actually light up, and I would value any input as to whether pursing ELwire lined side by side and covered with a frosted vinyl or something would be the cheapest/ best method, or if these EL sheet I read about a few times would be a better method, or if there is some third alternative.

Hi Apollo,

Unfortunately , I'll have to recommend reading all 60+ pages once your'e done with Finals. It has a PLETHORA of good information and what methods work well and which don't. Although 1500 posts is alot to read, I HIGHLY recommend it. Just treat it like another 2 days of studying once you're done with your tests!

I've looked around as well, and it looks like for all the preview footage they were throwing around out there, that the screen caps ares sort of limited. But I should be able to get screen caps soon, and when I do, I'll post some of the Flynn & Clu's jacket for you. I'm pretty sure you are correct though. It's about a 3 inch lighted strip on a motorcycle (mandarin/tapered collar) jacket running the whole length of the weather flap.

For the least amount of work, I'd recommend getting some EL Tape. El Wire with diffusion, on an inside flap like that, will only add bulk. And you'll get dark spots as it will be in on the inside of the jacket, thus bowing the EL Panel you've created outwards, and pressing the diffusion material up against the reflective surface of the posterboard or vinyl. The reason why I think it works for outerwear application is because you can pull the diffusion material taught across the top of the 2 separate wires giving an unfettered reflection glow from the EL off the white background.

With EL Tape it's a solid glow all the way through and you can still cut it to match the curvature of the inside flap with half 1/4th the amount of work. Wit El tape, you get the size you want, wire it, then attach it to the garment.

With EL wire, you need to make a pattern, cut out some backing, attach the wire to the backing, Attach the Diffusion film/fabric to the backed EL wire, then put a dark edging around it (like black duct tape or Electrical tape) to further diffuse the light toward the middle, then once that is complete, you then have to attach the Panel to a non-constantly bending surface (or else the wire may break and short out the lights).

Though wire may be cheaper than tape, it will give a better glow and last a bit longer in the overall longevity scope.

So yeah, definitely EL Tape. It's what I'll be using for my Black Flynn Cloak as soon as I want to tackle another costuming project...

Don't worry, I'm "just an actor" too, and I was able to figure it out (though paying an extra $7 or so for quick connect EL was a boon for my time constraints). There's plenty of picture tutorials on the net and and Actordiver and Compass are really good about answering questions.

Even though there's no luck on the screencaps yet, these are the illustrations of Flynn and Clu from the comic TRON: Betrayal. I'm assuming they're relatively accurate as nowadays most film adaptation artists have a myriad of film sources at their disposal to get the look as accurate as possible. Esepcially since this was released by Marvel, and Disney now owns them.

Hopefully, this'll be a good start. I amped up the contrast and brightness a bit in photoshop to allow for more detail. So I hope this is at least a little bit of help.
