Tron Legacy Costume

Awesome, awesome thread with tons of great advice! We have a local con coming up this weekend and my son wanted a Sam Flynn costume, so I dug through the posts and got a game plan and whipped this up last night. It's a slightly oversized turtleneck ($6), some ladies black leggings which I sewed to fit him better ($6), 5 sheets of black craft foam (99¢ each) and 10 feet of reflective tape ($13) ... oh, and he got an identity disc while down in New York with my wife visiting friends.

Low tech but really cheap and comfy and he's psyched!

When he was standing in front of the Tron mural I painted him, he said "It's like I'm looking into Kevin Flynn's past!" Weird kid ... but of course, what hope did he have with a freak dad like me.

Thanks for all the awesome research people!

Very cool, It looks great.
I'll have to make a sam or clu costume for my 4 year old when I take him to comic con next year. I'm going with eddie's technique of using a cut up oversized wetsuit for the latex parts. Glo tape will be more fun for kids than reflective tape. Anyway, one project at a time.

I've been following this thread for a while and mining ideas to help my little sister build her Gem costume. She ended up going with the reflective tape for the lights and ran short on time to prep for Halloween, but here's what she ended up with:

I've been trying to talk her into re-engineering the lights and finishing the whole thing up, but this one might end up getting shelved.

WOW! That looks fantastic! She'll be the star of the premiere at your local theater! LOL! How did you do the shoes? They look great! Great job on the entire costume! :)

Duck, I don't know which one I'm more impressed by...the costume or the TRON mural on the wall! Great job on both! When I saw the mural, the kid voice inside me whined, "I want one!" LOL! ;)

Really Duck... both the wall and the suit, amazing work. How you threw that together for him so quickly is shocking. AND I WANT THAT WALL!!! :love

Every time I come to this forum and see the different suits people are doing, I find myself rethinking my 'Tronish concept'. My extreme lack of costume construction experience makes me think I can't build anything, then you folks remind me it's just a task one has to get down and do. My 'lesser TekLok' armor will be wired in a few days, then we'll see how I did.

That TRON mural is AMAZING. Great work on that! 8D

I've been like visiting this fourm and thanks to every tip I read everyone's sharing, I'm working on my Quorra costume XD Thank you seriously people!

I just NEED to mod my identity disc toy to make it stay lit by itself... Does anyone have a tip on how? :/

I've seen a number of mods on YouTube, but they require the USB hookup, so not really thinking that will help much unless you can create a mobile power pack with USB connection. I guess there is no reason an ELWire setup inserted into the edge chamber and the power pack in the body itself would be all that difficult.

Personally, I am not going the disc route, but mod'ing one of my Battle-Ready Lightsabers (since I build them, seems logical to use one :)) and match the blue-toned cyan LED in the blade to the Aqua Blue ELWire I have in the armor plates/helm. My version of a Tron:Legacy Light Baton.

AHHHHHHH I am freaking out! This is so awesome! Look at his facial expressions too with his poses, he is all into it! :D

There is a very simple hack to get the disk to stay lit up, but it does require some soldering. That being said, I have never soldered anything before and i got this to work. Here is a link to the wiring diagram done by blackfeathers(thank you sir). tron disc mod 3 variant. simple battery mod | Flickr - Photo Sharing!

What i had to infer from the pic (as someone who has no knowledge of wiring) the open solder pads are referring to the negative solder points (which makes sense because you are soldering them to the negative battery wire.) Also if you have never done anything with soldering before this is a great little starter project. Just google how to solder for some beginners tips and make sure that your wire is small and flexible enough to still fit in the disk when you put it back together.

I am currently trying to figure out how to mod my disk too. If rewiring all those LEDs to constantly stay on doesn't work then yes, I will be putting white EL Wire inside my disk and somehow cramming a tiny driver in there. I may have to take the driver apart for its parts and mount inside with a AA battery but I will get a constant light! I am determined. My Quorra suit is going to be rigged with white lights so I need a white disk. Wished they made other colors than the blue.

Maybe you can "fake" this embedded strips putting some thin rubber tape on the sides of the lights, istead of the regular black tape.
Or cut the latex where the lights go, and place the light edges under the latex in those cuts.

Great minds think alike... that is exactly what I was going to do anyway ;) 1st I am going to mount the poster board backed with black masking tape to my latex armor with Super Glue Contact Cement. Already tried a practice piece, holds great and it is flexible! Was worried it was going to eat away at my latex but it doesn't. This is what I am using. Popular stuff. The stores and even online are always out of stock...

Here is the second part of that article about how they created the costumes:

Tron Legacy: Light Suit Costume - Part 2 | Clothes on Film

Thanks! Just saw that yesterday I love anything I can find on the making of the actual costumes.

"Hedlund’s primary costume is a disc game suit. It was far and away the most difficult for associate costume designer Christine Bieselin Clark and her team to get light into and unsurprisingly it also ate the most ?? battery life, lasting only 10 minutes per charge maximum."

"Sitting down was also impossible due to the fragility of the light connectors. Instead stand-up ‘resting boards’ were made for Hedlund and others to relax on between takes."

Holy crap. :eek

If this is not one of the most well thought out, extreme and creative fashion films, I'd be shocked if it does not pull in awards for Costume and Special Effects this year.

I agree all the way! I hope this movie is nominated for best costuming FX.

WOW WOW WOW!!! :eek excellent work! Wish we could get everyone making a TL suit together for a photo shoot and to the premiere at the CityWalk. We would blow everyone away!

I'm having some issues with what to use for a hub. Also, how to connect it to the armor... A friend just started working on a Siren costume and is dumbfounded at how she is going to mount her disk and hub to her spandex suit.

Any advice?
I think I might be making this a bit more difficult than it actually is.

Might be difficult to picture, but this is what I would do.
Wear a cross-strapped shoulder harness under the lycra (similar to a shoulder holster harness.) Attached several Neodium magnets onto the straps where the hub would go. Attach corresponding magnets on the hub to sandwich the lycra costume in between. No cutting or sagging of the fabric.

BarJedi this is exactly what I was going to say when I read your comment. When I was at ElecTRONica. I studied the SIREN dancer girls costume. She had an invisible zipper center back and the middle of her back mostly likely had a split opening hole for her straps connected to the disc hub mount to pass thru OR, like I did on my Ulala costume to hold my rockets mount to my back, there were two slits on her suit where her straps pass thru, and are attached to the hub, criss cross over her shoulders and snap together in the front of her chest. I did see straps under her suit going over her shoulders which indicated to me that is how her disk hub was mounted to her back. Now the only thing left to do is build the thing ;) the fun part!

Ohhhh great thanks for posting this. Gonna try it on mine!

Thanks for the compliments guys, but really, it was all the research and experimenting you guys who have been in this thread for 40+ pages did that made making my kid's costume easy. For example, I NEVER would have thought reflective tape would work so well in flash photos. It wasn't until I saw Annisse's Quorra that I thought "Well I'll be damned, that just might work!" And the other reason it only took me one evening is because you can get away with a lot of fudging and cheating design-wise when you are making it for an 8 year old kid. In fact, he was asleep when I was making most of it, so I couldn't fit it to him and make markings and measurements, so I just guessed a lot. If it was for me (6'3" and 190 lbs) and I was at a con, the construction would have to be WAY better and more accurate.

And since you guys seemed to like the mural, here's a few shots before it got all covered by posters and book cases. It's about 8 feet across (the flash washed it out a ton):

Thanks for the compliment Anisse, I use super glue almost for everything, even to make my reactor.
But make sure that Super Glue is flexible. The glue called "Super Glue" in Spain is not, there is an specific one it is "The new and improved...blah blah", the standard is rigid and it might crack.
Always happy to be helpful.

By the way, my reflective tape does crack in some places unexpectedly.
Does anyone else's crack?

Do we have any pics of the internals of the discs, to show where the pads are and what lines need to be soldered to them in order to force the disc to remain ON with a switch throw??
