Tron Legacy Costume

Hi all!

I'm at it again. After 2 yrs. decided that I am going to try to not only rubberize my Siren Gem suit but I am actually going to light it up this time!

Old reflective tape is now removed. I am redoing the arms too cuz the hands became a mess of general dirtiness and glues I used to cement the latex fingers. All came off and putting in some new ones.

It took me 6 test tries with some swatch pieces to practice my rubberizing the fabric method. I am finally satisfied with this. It is not exact but I got the mix of a metallic look overlay on top of the latex layer onto the fabric. My suit will not be rubberized with a the metallic look as the Siren movie suits were designed.

I am taking photos of the process in hopes to make a tutorial to post when I am done but I basically used Liquid Latex watered down about .25 percent ratio to your liquid latex, mix it all together, paint it onto your fabric in one direction with a foam brush. Let it dry at least a couple hours then used Jaquard Pearl Ex metallic pigment in Pearl White and use very little to brush on top of your fully dried latex layer.

Here is my final test swatch photo. Will post more of my progress as it comes.

My new rubberized light up Siren Gem cosplay is set to debut at DragonCon 2013!

Here's a shot of me testing the Lite Tape strips which I am adding on to my Siren Gem costume. Onto rubberizing the suit next before I adhere the light strips.

P.S. I have a little over 8 feet of this FlatLite Tape left over. Over estimated how much I needed.

I am selling it at cost $5.95 USD per foot or $48 USD for all of it, just under 9 feet total uncut length.

It is 1/2" width Split Electrode Lite Tape in White. Here is the pricing list. You will need a 12V battery source to illuminate it and an inverter. Plus some ETCO connectors or copper eyelets to attach to the Lite Tape then to the lead wires, plus Molex connectors for the lead wires to the inverter. All these can be purchased from LUMINOUSFILM.com where I purchased this Lite Tape.

You can learn more about this product here and contact the company with any questions you have. There is a Tech. sheet to show you have to illumiate this product.

If you are interested in purchasing this FlatLite Tape product, please send me a PM.

Thank you :)

^ That's looking killer, Annisee! Glad to see you back at it!

Practical question. After the suit is done, what will you do to clean it? I imagine that the rubberized bits will pick up dirt and grime pretty easily.

hello everyone! this is my first post !

i just had quick question about bending el tapes... i kind of wanted to make the clu jacket which the director wears or what clu and kevin flynn wear in the movie..
anyways i wanted to make my dolce jacket like that however i just have 1 el tape of 1 meter which covers the jacket lenght and goes around the neck around the collars...

i just wanted to know if i bend it near the colors like in the picture attached...will the bent part stop functions? if so...whats a safe limit to bend it at?
and also if it goes bad (the bent part does not work) what do i do??

i could have just ordered another piece of el tape but i am from india and it takes 2 months for the el tape to arrive from ebay so i have to work with what i have! third world problems...

sorry for the excess questions

please advice..

Not all types of EL tape can deal with bending much further than 90° without failing at the bend point. Here's a small tutorial on EL tape I did a few pages back showing how to make your own connections, how to daisy chain cut lengths together and cut shapes out of the tape so it still works:

Hope its of some help.

Hello Everyone, I am new to this but I have a couple of question I was hoping I could get answered. I am attempting to make a Quorra costume and am trying to find at least 2 yards black hexagon patterned fabric. I also had a question on which is better easier to work with for the lighting EL Tape or el Wire? Any advice is greatly appreciated this is going to be the most ambitious costume I have taken on !

Ok, so that Tron inspired bellydance costumes I needed help on are here:

We used a combination of high pigment printers fabric ink for the white and then applied a layer over of this stuff called Flashe which is UV reactive. We haven't performed at our theater performance yet though, so we'll see how the 'glow' translates....

If I remember correctly, user SoulInertia produced a run of hexagon fabric, but I have no idea if it is still available.

Thank you, still have to post photos of me in my Siren Gem costume from DragonCon. Been lazy :p

and to answer your question, I actually have no idea how to clean it! HA! I don't think it can go through a dry cleaner without all the electrical components being destroyed. No way can I put it in a regular washing machine. All the lighting is glued on permanantely. Only way I can clean it is by freshing it up with Fabreeze :p

Try www.luminousfilm.com It is was I used to light 3 of my TRON costumes. You can bend their Lite Tape Split Electrode film at 90 dgree angle with no defects to the film. It'll be dark burnt out ONLY in that flat bent area but it will not short out the entire strip of tape. Check out that website they have a tech sheet demo there too showing how the tape is bent.

Yeah, surface cleaning would probably be the only safe thing. Somebody must make something for cleaning/freshening vintage fabrics, etc., that has a better cleaning action than Febreeze...might be able to use it on the costumes.
