Tron Legacy Costume

okay so ive looked at suitable neoprene vests and my budget is way too small to buy just the base layer so i will be making a felt vest (fairly easy) and then spraying it with plastidip spray or i might leave it as it is and attach foam plates not sure ;)

1in wide, 1/4in - 1/2in wall thickness Poly-carbonate Plastic tubes (i.e. Bulletproof plastic windows in banks) :cool The Poly-C acts as a natural diffusor, with some of the blades actually made in a deeper contrast of white which gives the LED color a boost in order to help it climb out of the center of the tube.

The light comes from a single 1-5watt (average is 3watt these days) LED, basically class 2 lasers.

This might fall a bit off topic but I do know someone that used these same lightsaber 3w LEDs to create a fiber optic system like a TRON outift.

Saber LED examples, just for brightness..

Where do you get your polycarbonate at gams? I'm thinking about using a wooden bokken, with a channel cut into it and laying the polycarbonate into it, with the battery compartment etc in the handle. Do you think this would work?

I'm not sure if you order it and then shape it yourself or order it to shape, and I've never done it before, but I suspect a baton-katana in this method would still hold up to full contact sparring (as long as you're careful in the amount of material you drill out of the handle)

Thoughts?

End of line.

These are awesome! It seems the last 2 links are the same, but if you just browse the gallery, there's a few more (total 5). Thanks!

Also, I've never worked with polycarbonate before, if you get a rod, is it pliable? Like, can you give it a slight curve like that, or do you need to heat it to make it softer? If it bends a little but springs back, I think that'd be fine, especially if it got glued into a notch. I'm guessing E6000 would be best for this?

I buy my PolyC Rods from a guy that provides parts for lightsaber construction. They are 'slightly' flex, meaning if you hit it against a tree at full force, it will bend.. that's it. :)

I have a black wooden bokken on hand that I will be laying a strip of ELTape from hilt, along the side to tip then back down to the hilt once more. That will easily create the LightSword effect from TRON: Legacy. As to placing a groove into the wood of the sword and getting a tiny (thin) rod of PolyC to lay over the lighting seems like an overcomplicated method of getting the exact same effect.

Yes, E6000 is great for nearly everything (nearly, not all) you will ever glue together. :love

I didn't mean have the PolyC rod lay over the lighting, I meant that I figured to lay it in, and have an LED at the end like you do for the lightsabers, which would be cheaper than buying EL tape, and less electronics, since you don't need an inverter. I guess I should have been clearer lol.

I WANT ONE. >:C

@ Luni Thanks for the advice! I'll definitely be using the shower curtain/white cloth thing next time I drop by Jo-Ann's. c: I'll check out that disc mod thread too!

Awesome! Thx for posting!

That guy is incredibly talented! W:eekW!

He did the sculping, but still it was an awesome job. Rinzler looks sooo badass!

And those replicas are looking great! It would be soo cool if the colors switched... as in Orange, a catchy "I fight for the Users!" and then white xD. That was one of my cosplay ideas, there are this cool RGB Led strips that change colors with a remote, but, again, no time and no money D:

@MVKiU: Glad I could help!

Oh, something I've been mulling around in my head since I heard the shower curtain idea but kept forgetting to mention: I suspect something with a lot of irregular, polished surfaces (like plastic or other synthetic thread instead of cotton or other organic fibers, or even smooth surfaces) would be best to refract the EL wire, rather than reflective tape. Reflective tape, paint, and other materials use 90 degree angles to reflect light back towards it's original direction, which is why it works so well for flash photography, street signs at night with headlights, etc. However, this also means it won't diffuse the EL wire light properly, but end up reflecting most back towards the source. Something like a semi-gloss white material, like lycra would in my opinion, be your best bet, as the rounded surfaces will reflect the light in many directions. I'd say things like PVC or other standard "shiny" materials, tin foil, reflective tape, and the like wouldn't work as well. I don't plan on using the method, but remembering physics and light reflection/refraction/polarization, this seems to make the most sense to me. I could be wrong though.

Hope that helps.

I am still struggling to diffuse red EL wire, nothing I try can diffuse it, if anyone comes up with a method that works please let me know. I am reworking my concept costume to just use non-diffused Red EL Wire pattern tonight, not ideal but I have limited funds and access to resources so it's best I can do :(
My next concept costume I might limit the amount of illumination like on Rinzlers & Trons, I need to unlock some more designs from Wii Tron Evolution Battlegrids so I can tailor another costume.

Rinzler, did you ever figure out a way to diffuse red EL wire? I'm sure there's a way to do it, just not sure if you've found one yet. What materials have you used for your backing material (The one behind the EL wire, not the shower curtain / masking tape)?

I tried with the red and had absolutely no luck :( am moving to blue-white as soon as I get a good pep model of my Anon helmet (3rd attempt grrr) am thinking of just getting EL Tape/Strip instead

Believe it or not, the cost of doing an ELTape strip, plus inverter, plus wooden bokken is actually a good bit less than building a base LED/PolyC tube saber setup.

ELTape+inverter (on the cheap $24), plus the bokken ($12) = ~$36.
PolyC Tube+mirror tip ($30), plus 3Watt LED set ($18), plus internals ($10-12) = ~$58-$60.

The issue tends to be the cost of the PolyC tubes, the need for an LED of at least a 3w output so it's more than some dim little haze of light in the tub, and other minor details. ELTape makes a number of these power-to-brightness issues not a problem.

Hi guys! Love all the new Tron costumes that are evolving each time I come back to visit the forum! Great job and amazing effort to everyone in here! :thumbsup

So, I don't think I ever posted completed photos of my Quorra costume armor. It is made with latex sheeting 1.0mm, total pain in the rear trying to conform that stuff around the body, it is completely flat, not molded at all. So you can image what I struggle I must have went threw to achieve this.

Here are some front and back photos of my completed costume. Lights on and off. I used Eddie's El Wire diffusion method with the shower curtain.... what ever happened to him, never heard from him again here in this thread.

There it is. Now, can you believe I just ripped off all those light strips I made and now they are going to be shipped off to a new owner. I am grateful someone wanted to purchase my light strips which will now fund my new LiteTape from Luminous Film I am VERY excited to get it and can't wait to install my new lights and pray it is not a total nightmare to do it and they don't all break when I wear the costume. I know that LiteTape is sure going to be ALOT more durable than El Wire that is for sure.

I will be debuting my new light setup at this year's San Diego Comic Con International.

Someone told me that supposedly the FLYNN Arcade attraction that they had last year was coming back. Can anyone confirm this? I missed it last year and wanted to die after I saw all those amazing shots online from the EOL Club. I sure hope this rumor is true.

Great stuff on these Trondheim suits folks!
And David, your leather work....once again ...incredible.
Does your motor suits light up though?

I see... I didn't expect the rod to be that much. I'll have to look around some more. I also don't want to have to deal with a battery pack AND inverter as far as space, since wooden bokkens aren't exactly spacious inside (like the discs). I'm still in the research and planning phase, but $30 does seem to be a bit expensive for the size PolyC rod I'm thinking (like 1/2 inch diameter or so.)

Hmm, I had forgotten the other side. I originally thought the light was only on one side, but can't confirm this now. Every picture I've seen seems to show the left side of the "blade" if you're looking at it edge down while holding it. I'll have to look around some more on this.

Thanks for the replies gams. Like I said, I've never toyed around with making the lightsabers so it's new ground for me. I'm just brainstorming and hopefully a good idea will be sparked in the process. :lol

You should try flexible LED strips like I did. My first project with this stuff was with red light sections. The brightness cannot be beat, you just have to be clever with how you seal it up to hide the bright spots. Look through all my posts in this thread, I give a pretty good idea of how I did it.

As for backing material, I humbly submit you all try this silver sheet paper at hobby lobby, its only $2 for a poster board sized sheet. Very reflective stuff. The beauty of the LED method is that if you put the led strip at a 45 degree angle to this reflective paper, you get a very nice reflection angle from the material and combined with show curtain and masking tape, creates a very even (and bright) light strip.

Soulinertia's disc kits use the same LED strips I used in my suits, if you have one of his discs you know what level of bright I'm talking about.

Bummer. That's really quite strange that you couldn't get it to diffuse though.

Annisse, that's great, I can hardly wait to see the results you get with your LF tape. I had thought you already got it but that must have been your End of Line waitress costume. Pretty soon, you're going to have a hard time deciding which Tron Legacy costume to wear!
