Tron Legacy Costume

Would these be hollow so you can put magnets inside of them? I am sort of partial to my plastic one because of this.

Yes they are hollow. Here is one that has the bottom cut away:

They also have a hole in the middle of them in the back to be able to mount magnets or metal, I just cut it all away for this photo.

I have an article up about them on my website: Tron Disk Holders

As for the disk holder design, it seems pretty split. Maybe we can do both designs. I will see how much production cost will be.

After scouring screencap after screencap with a bit of cursing along the way, I finally got the pattern figured out for my CLU helmet. I thought about going the pep route, but I had some decent results with the Stig helmet I made for Halloween that I decided to try my hand at my own pattern first. It's pretty simple; I used a paper mache'ed balloon as the base then built around it with poster board. Now that that's done, I'll paper mache over the poster board for strength and to make everything one piece. Then I'll be able to sand down the overly pointy angles and coat it with a mixture of plaster and glue to smooth it out before painting it. For the visor, I'm planning on coating some clear vinyl with transparent black model paint and gluing it over the openings. Sorry for the crappy bathroom pics. The lighting in my room is horrible for pictures.

Just tried my hand at making a disc holder from stuff laying around the house. I used 3 different tupperware containers cut to fit the disc's inner diameter. I made it a snug fit that requires almost a "snap on" kind of action. I'm going to mount it to my Jacket with magnets and have some in the disc as well, just in case. It still needs some clean up to get a smoother finish. Also, I'm pretty sure I'm going to remake the center top piece with the notch cutout from something thicker and smoother so the depression looks deeper. Over all though, I think it turned out decent.

Just peeled all the plasti-dip off. I'm going to make it a flat black instead. Took off the center cutout piece too. I may use a thicker foamie piece.

Hey MisterDigital, I like the look and simplicity of your disc holder and
it wouldn't cost much, yet be functional. :)

Which of the tupperware containers did you use and how did you create
that particular look? Got any pictures of the build from scratch?

Thanks.

Sorry. I didnt think to take pics until it was too late.

The flatest and widest part is a tupperware lid. I just found one in a size I liked and made it into a ring.

The middle portion was a soup container that I I cut the bottom off of and kept cutting down and down until the diameter fit the disc well.

Then I topped it off with a lid. I did have to do some cutting little by little on the middle portion to get the diameter right for the lid. Trial and error.

Thats it.

In about an hour or so I will post the re-build. I put a thick foamie in the center, but got rid of the notch cutout. It looked weird deeper. So, I went with a simpler more SA look with just a ring cut out. Alot smoother this time around too.

That's great work and a good concept creation MD. Looks like I just changed my design. :$

Thanks everyone! I finished up version 2, but somehow it isnt quite what I had wanted. I made the center piece the same height as the outer ring which looked SA, but then it made my notch look weird, so I took it off.

I think I'm going to give it one more shot with the notch at half height or the outer ring (original style but taller) with a new set of pieces so I have this one just in case.

Con coming up in 2 weeks. Finally finished up all the LED panels for my suit, more pics to come when its all finished up, maybe tomorrow if I"m lucky. The blue is SO much brighter than the red, it really outshines those LEDs I put in my disc :p

I'll be getting my panel from GlowHut in this afternoon. I'll let you know what the qaulity is like. I may even go home to check for it on lunch... a little excited.

Oh, and Tim, my custom jacket is shipping on Sat. Almost here.

So I was rethinking again about Glowhut vs. LumniousFilm product.

I wrote Glowhut today and asked if their El Tape can be bent at 90 degree angles, if it can be cut down to any length and if it contains that center Scribe line as LumniousFilm Lite Tape has?

Glowhut got back to me and said there is no Scribe line, yes you can cut it down to any length and yes you can bend their El Tape at any angle but you will see the crease where it is bent.

I was like OK... why did I go with the LuminousFilm product then? I don't really like the Scribe line down the center.

With LumniousFilm's El Panel split electrode Scribe line, no matter where you cut it the Scribe line will allow you to connect it back to the inverter.

Once Glowhut's El Tape is cut down, if you cut off the connector part which goes to the inverter, I was told it is hard to get it reconnected plus without the Scribe line it is basically useless.

Also, Glowhut has a fee for custom work. If you need a specific width, you have to pay $175 for your 1st order no matter what the length you need then on your next order I believe you don't have to pay any more custom work fees.

So aside having to deal with that center Scribe line with Luminous Film, I like them because of the variety of widths they offer but if you need to connect the El Panel back to the inverter once it is cut you can either do it in parellel or split. Split work is a mess of wires but better in the long haul of things.

Any way, that's my two cents.... I STILL don't like that Scribe line! :D why does electronic stuff have to be so complicated!!?!?!??!?! and just do what we want. EASY! HAHA

I posted some pics here of GLOWHUT's product so you can see how you can bend it. These are pics that aren't on their site and were emailed to me.

Just wanted to come in and say thanks for this post. I was originally planning to very haphazardly cut and segment out the EL panel for the front of my costume, but with your post and my Girlfriend's experience with Bias tape, I managed to fold it very neatly for the front of the costume.

Its not finished, and I plan on using frosted transparencies ($45 for a pack of 100 at Office depot) to cover the panel, but some in progress shots anyway:
