Torso version 1.33

Thank you 25-sstb-25, i think all of what you pointed out was right. I have been using several refrences, including some pictures from steve wangs new miniature kit. There are so many slight differences but i am leaning twards the one from the movie more. I added some of more little boxes on the armour, and i have been reworking to abs more. I am about done with this except for some more detail on the belt and a little clean up here and there, so please speak up if i missed somthing! Thanks for looking.

No problem :)
By the way i know you've just said that this would more than likely be damaged in the molding process but would you consider doing a mask display bust before completely demolishing the sculpt?
Basically a chest cast for those who dont have the room for one of the bigguns, theres a pic so you know what im on about, just using the chest and partial shoulders like the sideshow bust and adding a round something or other for the mask to sit on.
I think it would make for a nice display

I can just cast a section of the chest if thats what you are looking for and fill if with foam or somthing?

hi casey are you going to suspend it somehow for casting purposes?! with that weight youll need 2-3 helpers !!?just wondered, looks great by the way.

well each half of the mould will weigh about 150 lbs. I plan to attach handles to make it easy to carry and the latex will be painted in in coats. Once its thick enough i will put it back toghether and paint the seams up, so it shouldent be a big deal. I have been working out again after a little break so i am in good shape i can handle the weight no prob. And PS, my name is corey :)

With the Ultra-cal 30, do you put it straight onto the clay or do you put silicone in between?
I am looking at moulding clay straight onto a mannequin as I am the same size as it. I'm hoping that will prevent having to make a lifecast, does that make sense?

from what i understand,.....a clear coat or " release " must be put on almost dry clay to help get it out of the mold easier,....
and if the mannequin is the same size as you keep in mind most latex shrinks when cured so overcompensate for height and width when it comes to the sculpt,........i'm no expert by any means but i'm sure that's the gist of it,.....

Hey Cory, if you have any bad pulls of this project I'd be glad to take one off your hands...

Travis

Hey travis, i will post up any that have problems in the forsale section as damaged. Hopefully i have done this enough times there wont be any tho

Yea you can do that. Philby basicaly nailed it. A coat of crystal clear sealent is sometimes used to help make a smoother surface that will allow the clay to not stick to the ultracal 30. You can sculpt onto a mannequin or even free hand as long as you take into account the shirinkage (about 10%) of the latex and allow a little room to move around. I made a lifecast so that i can foam fill the inside of the piece so that it will fit like a glove, and it wont wrinkle or sag and look like a latex skin. I am going to have to cut the arms off my lifecast and get them to re-attach afterwards, but i will post that all up here so you ca see what i mean.

I was working on this last night, its basicaly done now. I am waiting for a nice day to mould this because its to big so i will be moulding it in the bed of my pickup truck most likely. I will post some finished pics here and face book very soon. Thanks for commenting everyone!

Well i have been waiting to mould this for a few days and keep getting rained out. I was staring at the sculpture for a wile and i decided to make a few changes. I modified the muscles in the sides of the rib cage and the back musclues a bit to make them a little more accurate. I also thought that the leather textures were a bit weak so i added (thank you colm) a bit more texture to them. I think they look beter but i would love some feed back!

dude that looks really nice! don't over think it though. if you stare at it too long you will never be happy with it.

Can you believe all this damn rain. I think we live in Washington or Oregon....

The moulding process has begun! I have been slaving over a hot sculpture all day and i got the first side poured. As promised i will show my steps, so here goes. First i laid the sculpture down and used old wooden blocks to build up the dividing wall. I put some plastic bags over the wood just so they clay doesent get all dirty.

Next i built up the clay wall and cut some keys to register the two halfs.

Then i added 2 splash coats of ultracal -30 followed by about 6 layers of burlap soaked in ultracal. I put two metal pipes to support the arms because this is going to be a beast and i dont want the arms to break under the weight of the mould. Plus they make nifty handles.

Well the first half is done, all seems well at this point but i wont realy know untill i get it done and crack it open. Its not the prettiest mould i have ever made but it should work just fine. I will have more updates tommarow when i finish the other half. Thanks for looking, and if you have any questions about the moulding, please feel free to ask.

cool beans dude! thanks for taking the time to document it. sometimes it's a hassle to remember to stop and take pics.

Thank you as well for taking the pictures and explaining the process. Just one question, did you put another layer of Ultra Cal on top of the last layer of burlap?
