Tobin's Spirit Guide! (RESEARCH SIGN-UP POST 364!)

Re: Tobin's Spirit Guide! (NEW sample pic pg. 4)

Love the progress on this!

I have some books at home that have pictures of old etchings and drawings of mythical creatures and monsters. I would assume all the images would be in the public domain since they're all hundreds of years old. Would that be of any help?

Absolutely would! :D

Re: Tobin's Spirit Guide! (NEW sample pic pg. 4)

You may want to differentiate between Voodoo and Voodoun/Vodoun (not certain of spelling), though I must admit a book of this era likely would not.

edit:
I remembered something that you might want to include. I searched the thread and nothing came up, so I don't think it has been mentioned.
The Loudun possessions http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loudun_possessions

I'll check it out. :)

As far as Voodoo goes it's a tough call. Tobin is an expert but how prominent was the distinction in the 1920s?

Re: Tobin's Spirit Guide! (NEW sample pic pg. 4)

What about some "hand drawn" sketches? Like a villager sketched what he just saw.
Yes! Like leprechauns!

I have a few suggestions for you.
First, with Vigo, instead of having a page in the book that credits "Magicians, Martyrs and Madmen" maybe you can include a torn out page from that book?
It seems to me that the GB's would have just read the info from Tobins in GBII if it were in Tobins. It leads me to believe the Tobin's info is sparse on Vigo since they consulted a different book and not the one they seem to know frontwards and backwards.

Next, I'd be more than happy to research the comics and video games for references to Tobins.

For example, there is a really neat backup story in issue 8 of the new Ghostbusters ongoing comic that directly involved Tobin himself.
I'm not sure if it's popped up anywhere before but according to the new comic, Tobin's name was "John Horace Tobin."
It states he was investigating a monster that was snatching kids in an East German village. It then implies he was involved in the Tunguska blast of 1908 (he looks to be involved, and may have caused it to kill that monster).
It shows him hunting Mammoths in Siberia, which implies he was a Cryptozoologist too. And there's a cool scene where he comes literally face to face with Death itself.
It also states he was Cambridge educated and was famous for "exposing fraudulent spiritualists."
I can provide scans of just about any page from these comics. There are also a few images that are supposed to be drawings done by Tobin for his book which are, to my knowledge, the only clear "official" glimpses of the inside of that book we've seen.

Also I believe a lot of the artifacts you collect in the video game are supposed to be listed in Tobin's and they mention Tobin's a few times throughout the game. I actually have that game in my Xbox right now so I can get that info easily.

I got distracted and hadn't worked on my tooth fairie illustration, but I finally got motivated to finish it. Here is a low resolution. If you like it I have a huge CMYK high resolution JPEG. Take a look!!

Nice. :)

Go ahead and post the high resolution image. I might alter the background but I think I could use that somewhere. :thumbsup

Re: Tobin's Spirit Guide! (NEW sample pic pg. 4)

VERY cool. :thumbsup

Too bad it's out of stock. :( Do you have the book?

I do! Are there any particular beasties you're looking for? It comes with a dvd that I think has all the images on it.

Re: Tobin's Spirit Guide! (NEW sample pic pg. 4)

I'm sure you've probably come across this before, but I found some information on the Ghostbusters wiki on Tobin and his Spirit Guide.

I found the history of Tobin to be particularly interesting, as I am sure it would influence his writing to an extent.

Re: Tobin's Spirit Guide! (NEW sample pic pg. 4)

Alright, it's been a busy few weeks but I have still been writing. :)

I PROMISE by the end of the week I'll have a new list up and will be asking for help in the form of researchers. Pick a spirit, copy/paste all the info you can find in a word doc, and send it to me.

As a special thanks to researchers I'll place your name in the backstory of your choice (first come first serve). These will be little Easter eggs to be found in the book.

Re: Tobin's Spirit Guide! (NEW sample pic pg. 4)

Okay, here's how to get involved:

Pick a spirit/creature on the list who ISN'T already highlighted with a person's name beside it and post here that you will do the research for them. If you have something to add to the list that isn't there already feel free!

All I need from researchers is a word document of copy/paste articles on the spirit. Please be as thorough as possible using different sources if you can. Important things to include are:

- Any other names they may go by
- Area of origin (or where they are most common) ie: Nigeria, Germany, Britain, etc.
- Traits
- Visual description
- Accounts of encounters
- Any info on followers
- Weaknesses (if any recorded)

Let's not fight over spirits, first come first serve. As a special thank you to all researchers I will include your real name in the book somewhere if you like. :)

I'll do Vigo, Slimer, the Sandman, and Evo Shandor.

You gotta let Protokev do Vince Clortho!!
