I have an old Playmates TMP/WOK phaser that I am wanting to fix up into a nicer looking prop.
Does anyone have pics of theirs or reccomendations on what to do (or what colors to use)?

That's how it looks right now.

I always thought the old Playmates phaser looked pretty good, so I'm interested in this as well.

The Playmates isn't 100% accurate shapewise but it's not too bad.

Later this year Art Asylum/Diamond Select is going to come out with a new toy of the WOK phaser. Should be pretty good!

Here's how HMS has painted their TMP and WOK version phasers, for the kits that you can get from Rodd.com

Here's mine. I carved in the groove and sanded down the bottom of the grip. The paint was just some metallic blue I picked up at Wallyworld.

Well, last night I took it apart, carved the groove, and removed the bulb assembly which I replaced with a red LED. (Basically, I just soldered it onto the wires for the bulb contacts)
Once that was done I closed it back up and puttied it up. If I ever need to open it again its going to be a bear but its starting to take shape..
I also did a test painting. Base coat of KILZ nickel which I sprayed over with a transparent paint called slate black.
I like the glow better now with the red LED.

This is (probably) not going to be the final paint scheme but I wanted to try it out for now.
The paint looks a little darker in the pics than in person but it is kind of dark...

Looks nice!

A challenge would be to rewire up the control pad... in TMP you selected among the verious modes, which were color coded (Stun, Kill, Heat, Disrupt I think they were).

In WOK they threw out the subtlety and just had chasing lights when the weapon was set to "Kill", IE when they all beam over to Regula One from the Enterprise, and McCoy's phaser is set to Kill. :lol

From what I remember, Brick Price said the original STTMP phasers were painted "BMW Anthracite Grey"

(Thoughtfully rubs chin...)

Now we're getting somewhere. I'll have to start looking for examples of that color (and find out if its available).

TMP prop compared to the Brad Nelson phaser which had been selected for the cancelled "Star Trek Phase II" project

Those little brass dots (in pairs on the control pad) are a "found" object I think. They also appear on the TMP Tricorder.

They might be those little self adhesive gold dots they used to sell for making your own clock faces. You could get the dots, numbers, and Roman numerals. I don't know for certain if they make them that small, but they look like the bigger ones I used to make rank pips from. :)

Those were the home made 'touch' switches that activated the props functions. I think that they were just miniature brass bolts, or pegs.

Hi Guys,
I had one of these in my hands for about a week when I was in high school the assistant propmaster on WOK was working with my father at the time and my father asked if He could show it to me, So he brought it home. But not thinking for the future at that time I did not take any photos. How stupid was that!!!! So then flash forward a few years and here I am working on a show call TNG and I am again in front of this same prop and I ask if I may take a few ref. photos and they say NO.

But I do remember that they were mini brass screws with hex heads, you can still get them at hobby stores. So Krel is correct.

I will look for the photo's that I do have now and see if I can upload them to my fliicker.com acct.

Thanks,

HMS Mike

^there's a 75k limit on wackychimp uploads. I think flikr is the way to go for hires reference photos. ;)

Here is an old playmates that I built up to represent a WOK phaser a few years ago. I realize that it is not entirely accurate, but I think it looks better than its original state.

Look in your train section for a product called Hob-bits. Various lengths and sizes.

Hob-bits? As in Bilbo?

Bring on the pix, Mike! :D

And that's a great Playmates mod! It really does look different. Did you grind down the front of the grip to remove that "hump" that it has? Looks amazing!
