Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland Costumes

OK folks! MH hat! I have pretty much extrapolated the best scale of the hat from pics. I come up with a brim of 2 1/2 inches wide and the crown at 11 inches tall. The diameter of the crown is going to be 25 inches. The top of the crown is going to have a diameter of 27 inches so that it will be about 1 inch on either side of the narrower end of the crown.

HOWEVER cutting the template in paper and looking at the scale the 2 1/2 brim looks HUGE compared to the 25 inch diameter headband! :confused I could reduce the headband maybe to 24 inches but it gets tight on the wig.

How have your dimensions worked out? Some of us have big heads while some of us have small heads! Still the 2 1/2 inch brim is the killer!!!!:cry

I thought someone said the actual hat was more like 9-10" tall. 11 seems to tall to me, from what I have read. I could be wrong.

I think you'll find that a height of 11 inces will be too tall. It's deceptive, it looks right until you put it on then it looks massive.

The hat we have is a mere 8 1/2 inches and check out how tall it looks when it's on. I gotta say, the height is REALLY deceiving. When it's on someones head it just stretches it right out. o_O

I think what you mean by diameter is actually circumference....or so I'm hoping...cause a 27" wide surface for the top is going to be one HUGE hat!!! :lol With that said...if you like the shape of ours:
The brim is 2 1/4 inches wide, 38" around, the circumference of the top is 31" ( its 9 x 10, more of an oval ), the base is 24". It's 21" around at the middle, the most narrow part. Hope that helps a bit. I think, after seeing some more recent shots though I'd take a the top circumference down a bit since the hat is pretty slim.

Here's the starts of what I have fabric wise. Still working on the outer skirt. I've found several okayish fabrics but nothing even close to being perfect. Dang it.

Not sure if I'm completely happy with the sleeve colour choice yet. Might not be pale enough. Might go with the matte side. I'm pleased with the netting. The red seems to be a good match for the underskirt. The bracelet has stones that are a pretty good match to those on the bodice. The small antique gold rectangle should work well on the bodice as well. I use to have a jewelry business so I have the rest of the pearls etc. comin' out of everywhere already.....haha

I found few things I'd like to get you guy's opinions on....A blazer to try to make some gloves out of (I must google search a template/directions for fingerless gloves...) and a pair of pants.

Once you go pants, you never go back. :lol Enspcialy if Chad is going to embroider them, I hate to have to do multiple pairs...So what say you guys about them?

Of corse the blazer material has that blue in it...But I could always practice with it. And the pants aren't purple enough, but then again, I like the look of the pants as seen here :

And for the record, the glove material :

EDIT - Oh I forgot.....I made it to a JoAnn fabric today, but I was on a very serious time restraint. I only had about 25 mins to figure out what material I wanted, and to get it cut. I found about 3 bolts of fabric I liked, and then relised I only had about 5 mins left. Went to get the material cut, and there were 4 people in line with many bolts in their carts. And the old woman was taking her sweet sweet time. So I left the fabric there and decided it was for the best. My printer printed the colors out a bit wonky when I printed the ref pics I have. So I'll wait until next time when I'm better prepared and have more time.

Jodo, are you wearing the costume for the movie premiere?

I think the fabric I found for the gloves is pretty close even if it has a smidge of blue in it...I might go buy a ton of it and sell some fingerless gloves for cheap ( since the fabric is cheap and they aren't hard to make :) ). I might be able to do a pair for you but don't know if I could get it done and out before the movie. >_o

For the pants, I'd personally recommend a dark brown-ish pinstripe as opposed to blue. I still see the pants as brown to this day. I just don't see any purple in any pictures except for the close up exhibit shots with a teeny bit of purple reflection...*shrug*

Nope, I'm just aiming for Halloween. I might be intrested in a pair of gloves! :D

I agree with your statement on the pants color, I do like the purple color they showed at SDCC, but I just personaly like the darker color. Whose to say they don't change colors too for that matter though. :lol

OK! Well I'll keep in touch about the gloved, Jodo. I don't know what shipping costs since I've never paid to ship anything in my life, but it wouldn't be much more than that. I'm thinking like $15 or so. :)

wig..........half done................taking so long.........dying from hairspray asphyxiation...but looks...so....good. o_@ <--- this is my new hatter emote.

there is actually a free downloadable pattern for fingerless gloves
ill have Panda Email it to me and ill post it here
there like really long though but that's not hard to shorten up

hey something i just thought of, are the cuffs a different material from the coat??
cause it kind of looks that way in this picture

i just want to make sure that its not be being tired looking at this and thinking crazy thoughts

Padawan, for fingerless gloves, I just trace the outline of my hand. XD Pretty easy and no wasted paper to print out a pattern! lol It's particularly easy for the hatter since the only fingers that are divided are the thumb and index finger and the rest is open space. :)

I'm 99% sure the cuffs are the same material. They look very slightly different just because they aren't as aged as the rest of the coat. In fact, hardly at all. I noticed they're a lot smoother and asked myself the same Q at some point in time.

And hey, here's a peek at what's been devouring my soul all night!

Obviously is still needs a LOT more trimming and even more hairspray before it becomes my newest masterpiece, but I'm quite pleased with it so far! I haven't decided just how much trimming I'll do since his hair length seems to vary from shot to shot and depends on how long he's had his hat on or off and...blah! But I'm confident it'll be great in the end. A definite upgrade from the balding neon orange clown wig we used for Halloween. o_O

Please ignore the ghetto-fabulousity of the hat as the new hat band is still in progress. :)

th wig looks geat sofar
im exited to see it on with the rest of the costume

and i guess that about the cuffs, so thats not to bad

and i did that with the gloves i guess the first stuff i tried to use just didn't stretch enough, and the thumb didnt come out the way i wanted
and i dont think the index is seperated
look at the picture i just posted
http://www.darkinthedark.com/wp-con...ter-johnny-depp-in-alice-in-wonderland_vf.jpg
(its the same one only huger)
it looks like its only the thumb and the other 4 are in a big space

my mom and i have determined that they were once oven mitts
cause they look padded and the thumb is at the right angle for a standard oven mitt

haha! thats what i meant! the thumb and index finger are separated from eachother, in otherwords...thumb is seperate, 4 others are together. ;)

HAH! I wonder what the Hatter would be doing with oven mitts. Helping the White Queen in the kitchen perhaps? lol!

The wig is insane. I, too, cannot wait to see how it looks with the rest of the costume! ( which still isn't done...... looks like I'll be wearing Tiny Alice afterall! No time for the Garden Dress :( )

HAHA ok
bit of confusion there

but yeah, there totally oven mitts
dont know why , but they so are

and that's ok, shes mostly wearing the tiny dress while shes with Hatter anyway

Oh yes. I plan on kneeling somewhere and photoshopping myself onto his shoulder to replace the avatar I have now. :D It shall be great.

In progress news...dang. I have to paint some buttons for the cuffs. And dye some more trim...also, does anyone know if the lacing in the back through the ... flappy things... goes through eyelets or just serged button hole type things...ugh. I'm horrible with terminology.

I had a couple of PMs about my stuff so I figured I'd just answer here and help whoever I can out.

The outer skirt fabric is still a mystery. Acme's fabric is the closest I've seen and unfortunately that's a dead end as it was the end of a bolt on clearance. I've found lots that had the elements of the pattern but are just way too elaborate. I've contacted another source but haven't heard back yet. I'll keep you updated.

The rectangle jewelry finding in my picture came from Bally Beads years ago. It was from there Belle Epoch collection. I just checked their website and it looks like they don't carry that line anymore. It's a shame because all of it was absolutely beautiful. If I had more I'd be willing to sell some, but I have very little of it left.

The netting was difficult to find, until I figured out exactly what it is. The internet is a wonderful place to search....but only when you know the right name to search for. I stumbled across what this is - it's the netting they use on birdcage hats. It's called French or Russian netting. Most often you'll find it in white and generally only 9 inches wide. Which would have been okay 'cuz you could sew it on in sideways strips. But I kept looking and found some on ebay that was 18" wide.

I hope that helps.

haha hi.

I keep contemplating on making a costume...i'm just on the fence enjoying everyone elses...
