Tutorials for subtle, light, mid, etc, weathering?

Hello, I hope I'm posting this in the right place. I feel it is because that's the effect I'm going for. I'm quite skilled at weathering, but everything I touch to weather, all go way overboard into the Star Wars, GrimDark, etc territory...

I just got done watching Hercules and Xena, and it made me realize that I don't have weathering method to make costumes look worn in, but still has plenty of color, just a step or two under "new, off the rack" and far away from grim darkness of the 40th millennium. Google and youtube searching really doesn't bring up anything for this level. All they show are the top watched and click-bait-y techniques for heavy weathering for Fallout, Dark Souls, etc.

A bit more to the point. I have this Fire Emblem cosplay, and its colorful.

But Lyndis is a lady of the plains, a nomad. I'm in this weird spot where I want to show that she's that is from the plains, dull out the satin shimmer (knock it down a bit), and still keep it colorful since its still Fire Emblem.

I bring up Xena because these costumes are pretty much what I'm going for. Worn in, clean enough to make out details, without everything blending together like in too many modern shows, colors pop, etc.

Sorry if I'm over explaining this, but truthfully, google and youtube just has NOT been helpful in this endeavor.

I am doing some tea dying right now on other garments to see if I can get something repeatable down, and did read somewhere about 800 grit sandpaper, and maybe something about dry brushing or rubbing in cooking spices?

Thanks!

Welcome. There are surely folks here who can help, but this should probably be moved to the "Replica Costumes" section.

"Screen Used Costumes and Props" is intended for original, authentic items used in (or intended for use in) the production of a film or show. Mainly collectors showing off acquisitions, auction news, authentication issues, museum exhibitions, etc.

If you click the "Report" link at the bottom of your first post, you can request to have it moved.

Yup, just did that. I see what you mean about the context in this section, lol. Sorry.

I'm no weathering expert, but I do a lot of it these days.

Seems like your techniques are fine, have you tried blotting off more of it on paper towels before applying?

Always better to do it too light, then come in with more layers!
