Is this all plasti-dipped? You know there is a brushable/spreadable plastic from Smooth On called Shell Shock.

Looks great man.

Nothing is plasti dipped yet. It's grey foam. Shell Shock is super viscous and has a super short pot time.. and it hardens the surface it's adhered to. I want my costume to remain flexible. Thanks for the compliments guys! Work on rest of stomach section tonight.

it would be cool if you filmed a foam tutorial when you make another part lol...

Re: EVA Foam Mark VI Iron Man Build - Torso Pics Up - Chest/Back and Abs! - 4/24

hey jordan, you used the soldering iron method on your mkIII yeah? I know i have seen closer pics of that foam armor and the details looked great. If it is the same process youwill use on this armor your suit should come out awesome.

Re: EVA Foam Mark VI Iron Man Build - Torso Pics Up - Chest/Back and Abs! - 4/24

This armor is totally diff and the details are way better. And I haven't used the soldering iron yet.

Re: EVA Foam Mark VI Iron Man Build - Torso Pics Up - Chest/Back and Abs! - 4/24

I can tell you are doing the armor differently, but since they were both out of foam i was just wondering if you had used the soldering iron technique on the old armor. I know you have not used it yet on the new armor, I am just real curious about what kind of detail is possible with the idea. Maybe I worded that last post a little confusing. I liked the detail you were able to achieve with the last armor and really anticipate seeing what you achieve with this new set of armor. I will ask this question since I have not worked with the foam yet. Does the soldering iron melt the foam resulting in a melted stiff edge that allows for the foam to retain the detail? I am trying to imagine what you are doing and it raises so many intriguing questions. I am not trying to hound you, so I will just wait for the updates as they come. I was trying to pick your brain as a gifted costumer. Your technique makes me think that it would be a viable option to create the fillers between the joints and still have both detail and flexibility.

wow. just wow. I have always wanted to make a full costume like this but have not been brave enough to attempt it. Can't wait to see the finished product

Hey Saber. No worries. Didn't mean to seem short with you.

I didn't use the soldering iron technique on my last armor. The last armor actually didn't have too much detail. It did but not by adding lines etc.. it was all done with cuts, shapes, 45 degree angles etc...

I got the soldering idea from Don Roberts.. it's what he uses to add in grooves and other small details.

I hope to test it tonight to see how it works and will post some pics of my progress with that. And not the foam doesn't melt that much.. it's pretty dense and resilient.

I also tested the plasti dip last night on some scrap. I brushed on a layer.. it dried fast and is sooo awesome. Adds a sheen to the surface and seals it beautifully. It flexes, stretches, bends, etc without cracking.

Also guys.. I plan on giving my whole suit a plain metal look at first.. reason being is I have a party in June I'd like to have this sorta finished for. Then I'll paint the red and gold after that.

Regarding the details in my new suit. I bought a handheld mat cutter. One that allows 45 and 90 angle cuts.. I use it to create to 45 cuts.. for making hard right angle edges.. or sometimes use it to create a 45 and a straight cut with my exacto blade to create a 45 degree angle between surfaces. It's great and gives you really, really clean lines.

Thats awesome, congrats on the mat cutter. Well then if you picked up the tip from don roberts then your work is gonna be even better. Since that guy is skilled enough to make costumes in his freaking sleep and make them better then anything i could do in a year of dedicated work. I was curious about the plasti dip and how that worked. I have seen the stuff and talked with a guy at the home depot close to me about it for an idea I had but he said it only came in red and yellow colors so for me would not work but I also noticed that it came in both brush on and spray can form. I made a mental note to keep that product in mind for future use. I am pacing to see how well it works for you and your application of it. Keep up the great work Jordan.

Re: EVA Foam Mark VI Iron Man Build - Torso Pics Up - Chest/Back and Abs! - 4/24

I bought my plasti dip in black which is the standard color. Color doesn't really matter anyways since the whole suit is getting painted. The plasti dip is simply a sealer and primer for the paint.

Told you that was some good stuff! ;) That's what I have for my soft armor parts. This Armor Kills your last! Its Clean and precise your'e doing a he!! of a job with those parts. Hey, I hot glued my pieces together and its messy. Do you use superglue?

Re: EVA Foam Mark VI Iron Man Build - Torso Pics Up - Chest/Back and Abs! - 4/24

Hot glue all the way baby! I hate, hate, hate superglue. It's messed up if it sticks to your fingers. Plus you can undo and reposition... plus it won't bond unless you hold it in place for longer.

Any ideas on smoothing down the seams and the glue that makes a mess? I hit a test piece with dremel.. it was too aggressive. Unless of course I should use a different bit or something. Maybe a hand held planer?
