Looking great as all your other builds Shaun....I am definately subscribing!!

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

What will this nifty new toy mean for your RC build? (subtle hint wink wink)

Not a lot. Mostly it'll mean I've got one more thing distracting me from that particular project.

Once again I neglected to take any pictures of the bodywork on the torso parts. What I did get was pictures of me trying on the helmet:

It fits:

I put the blue tape in the eye holes to test visibility for the lighting plan I have in mind.

The good news is that the faceplate will be able to hinge open:

Now I just have to come up with a servo placement that I like.

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

I love your builds some of my favorites! I got a mag subscription for Christmas from my brother and it was the makeit lol with your builds on the cover

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

and how was visibility? not too good i guess? but probably the best way to do it without the eyes looking like crap, so i'm pretty sure that i'll do it exactly the same way (if i ever finish the pep work, takes a lot of patience haha)

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

It wasn't terrible. There was a bit of tunnel vision, but it will make it very possible to get around without running into walls and whatnot.

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

i love this stuff, the cnc, machining, 3d printing.

but it kills my morale on making my own suit, knowing it'll never be as perfect unless i buy a printer and learn how to print. but oh well, such is life.

guess i'll just continue with the poverty foam/pep method. *sigh*
you look like you know your stuff and the machine wont goto waste with someone that knows little to nothing about how to use it to its full potential. so hats off to ya! cant wait to see more!!

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

Alright, I've got Lopez back to work and right now he's making the right arm. With any bit of luck the parts should be done in the morning. For now, here's some pics of the bodywork in progress...

Here's the belly section:

And the rest of the waist:

Whenever I focus on them for a few minutes, I should be able to get the rest of the cleanup done pretty quickly. Unfortunately, I keep coming up with other things to do in the shop.

The worst part at this stage is the pelvis. It still needs a lot more bodywork:

Here's a quick test fitting of the 3D printed flaps to the CNC carved back:

I'm still on the fence about re-carving the back in a slightly smaller size.

On that note, I'm also reprinting the helmet in a slightly larger size.

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

what was up with the orig helmet? it looked good

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

It looks good, but the shell is only about 3/32" thick. Since the printed prototype is too fragile to wear (I've already managed to crack the thin shell twice just trying it on) I'm going to have to mold it and copy it in a more robust material. It's already skin tight, so in order to make room for a thicker skin and hopefully the small servos that will move the faceplate, I'm making it another 8% larger.

The end result won't be all that different-looking on the outside, but it will be hugely different on the inside.

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

always love seeing your work man, this will be easily on par with all your other masterpieces, cant wait to see what leaks out of your brain next

8% is a lot Shaun! Trust me as it's about the diff between the Suckface and the fingead helmet both coming from "the files" :)

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

Wow, this is amazing! I can't wait to see more. So jealous of your new equipment!

You're probably right, but I'm still doing it. When I tried it on, the first helmet was way too snug to make sense once I cast it in anything else. Plus, when I lined it up on top of the CNC'ed chest it looked comically tiny.

At a glance, the new, bigger helmet will be barely half an inch wider. The faceplate was finished this morning and by arranging the slices of the helmet a bit smarter in the build tray, Jarvis is working on three of the eight helmet parts right now.

I neglected to take pictures, but I assembled the first full set of arm parts from Lopez this morning. It all looks good, but compared to the chest (which I built to 100% scale) the arms (which are 85% scale to fit my measurements better) look way to small.

So the 100% arms are way too big for me and the 85% arms are way too small for the chest. Now I'm re-sizing the arms at 90% and the chest at 95%. That should work perfectly. I have to do an in-between somewhere since there's no way I can make the waist and pelvis any smaller than 100% and still expect them to fit.

It all makes me very happy that I'm cutting the big parts out of relatively inexpensive materials. Especially since I seem to be making the full Goldilocks version of this build.

"This build is too big... This build is too small... This build is just right."

I'm on my way back out to the workshop in a bit to set Lopez up to crank out the "just right" size for the arm. I'll snap some pics of the too-small one when I'm there.

way of the future! I can't imagine what I would do with a 3D printer

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

As promised, here's a few pictures of the arm parts that were carved yesterday morning:

While these pieces are great, they're just a bit too small. Here's the bicep:

Here's the two forearm parts:

Lopez is working on another slightly larger copy as I type this. Barring any problems, it should be just right.
