Thorssoli's Ironman MkIII Build - Finished Suit Pics Page 26!!

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

Not much progress today, but I did get a chance to spray a gloss coat onto the calves:

I also took a quick inventory of the servos and microcontrollers I'm going to build into the suit:

I may have overdone it...

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

You just know it is going to be good when Thorsolli worries about "over doing it"

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

ummm any chance you going to work on a War Machine too?
nice work and thanks for sharing all those great pics

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

helluva job so far man..

oh and... subscribed!

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

If it's worth doing, it's worth over-doing, right?

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

Dude, every freaking time I think I might be able to do something as cool as you are, YOU GO AND RAISE THE BAR AGAIN!!!

Seriously though, I follow all your stuff just because I learn new things EVERY time you update. Thank you for sharing your craft with us.

I suppose I'm getting a bit of a reputation...

ummm any chance you going to work on a War Machine too?

I have detailed files...

It might be a while though. I really want to bring that one to life, but I've got to figure out how to fund the rest of the Mk2/3 build first.

If it's worth doing, it's worth over-doing, right?

I'm not sure I completely agree with you, but I'm over-doing it all the same.

...I follow all your stuff just because I learn new things EVERY time you update. Thank you for sharing your craft with us.

No problem. Just make sure you pay it forward as you develop your own skills.

chrome wrap...

Chrome wrap is a great way to expedite a faux plating effect on a large piece (such as a car) but with something smaller with all of the fine details you find on any of the armor parts, you'll lose resolution.

UPDATE TIME:
Over the past few days I've made not-quite-enough progress on the boot:

I have managed to shine up the front of the lower leg pieces:

Then I did some more cleanup work on the hand parts (which have been sitting on the shelf untouched for far too long):

After cleaning off the last residue of support material, it was time to make the mitts shiny too:

I stacked the fingers up on some clay and started prepping them for molding:

Then I started pouring rubber:

Between the hand parts, the chest, the back, the waist, and the pelvis, I used up most of a five-gallon bucket of silicone yesterday:

I started laying up mothermolds this afternoon, but I took a brief break to grab lunch and update the thread here. This is how the chest looks right now:

And the waist:

Today I'll finish the mothermolds for the chest, back, waist, and pelvis. I'll also lay up jacket molds for the wrist covers:

Then all I need to do is finish up the boot prototypes, build molds for everything below the pelvis, pull casts of all the pieces, trim, assemble, prime, paint, plate, wire, and wear.

Should be done in no time...

...but then again I could just be smoking crack.

AH HA! I see now why your projects always end up being so awesome! Your secret ingredient -- SOY SAUCE!

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

there film is 4mil / 100 microns
rattle can paint is thicker then that

I'm not worried about the thickness. I'm worried about trying to stretch it to fit into all of the nooks and crannies.

AH HA! I see now why your projects always end up being so awesome! Your secret ingredient -- SOY SAUCE!

You've found me out. Blast!

Time for an update:

It's been a busy day. It started with adding some fiberglass to stiffen up the mothermold for the back:

And the chest:

And the waist:

I stiffened up the pelvis molds too, but I neglected to snap any pics.

Once the glass had hardened, I pried the mothermolds off and peeled the rubber jackets off of the prototypes:

The prototypes never fare well in this process:

Once I'd cleaned out the molds, it was time to start layering up resin in the back:

and the waist:

and the chest:

Once the resin layer was set up, I reinforced it with fiberglass as well. Here's the chest:

and the back:

and the waist:

Today also marked my first attempt at casting any glove parts. I think they came out alright:

The next step will be to cut the front and back pieces apart along the gap and fit them up with magnets so they'll snap together around my hand:

Since I'd neglected to do it the day before, I finally got around to setting up the right fingers for molding:

Then I built a box around them and filled it with silicone:

I've already poured a set of fingers for the left hand. I haven't pulled them yet. I'm still a bit concerned that they'll come out of the mold in the same condition as the prototypes:

In other exciting news, I decided to use kenlandrum's excellent unibeam model for the hole in the chest. You can get it in his thread here: http://www.therpf.com/f24/iron-man-mkiii-3d-print-files-free-182942/

Here's what it looked like on the printer:

Here it is after I'd cleaned off all of the support material:

Test fitting it to the chest, it looks like it could stand to be a hair bigger:

The plan is to mold it and cast a copy in clear resin so it can be illuminated with LEDs. But first, I have to give it a gloss coat:

It's time for me to get a rare bit of sleep. When I wake up, I'll be heading back to the workshop to pull all of these pieces and a set of pelvis parts. Then I can trim them up and try them on.

Woot!

Now I just need to find enough cash to buy silicone so I can mold the leg and boot parts...

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

I know you're selling helmet casts. Will you be offering other individual parts? Namely gloves and shoes, and the unibeam if it comes out alright?

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

Have you looked into hydro-dipping for the gold bits? I've seen incredibly intricate items covered this way with great results, and its durable.

Great work on the build ... I'll keep quiet now and just watch the amazing progress.

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

Hydro-dipping or Hydrographic printing is great if you want a camouflage paintjob in a hurry, but I have yet to see convincing metallic finishes.

Work continued last night into the late hours. Among the highlights, I pulled the first copy of the back:

I'm pretty happy with it:

I also snapped off some of the mold flashing around the edges of the chest (narrowly missing my knuckles with a chisel because I'm an idiot sometimes):

Then, to savor the moment, I took my time peeling back the jacket inch by inch, soaking in every tiny detail, every line and ridge, revealing the bare chest in all its glory:

It also came out pretty good:

Since Trevor the Walking Mannequing was in the workshop, I cut down all of the edges and strapped him into the parts I had:

Because his smarmy, bedroom-eyes smile was creeping me out, I even put the helmet on him:

I was a little worried about the end results, but I'm starting to feel confident that this beast will come together okay:

Pelvis parts will come out of the mold today. I'll also be blocking up the leg piece for rubber. Next shipment of silicone arrives Friday. After that, it's off to the Maker Faire on the 18th and 19th. Oh boy!

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

Looks glorious, even with the smarmy bedroom eyes.

Re: Just What This Forum Needs: Another Ironman Build

I hate to be negative, but are you planning to build all the parts from hard plastic? You do realize that
1. it is impossible to make a real, working version of any of the IM suits?
2. many of the Legacy suits had soft, bendy parts to allow the actors and stuntmen to move in them?
3. for all the effort Legacy has put in, most of the suits were replaced with CG, even if the actor/stuntman was wearing the costume, which was used just as lighting reference for the VFX artists?
