Thor & Ironman (arm construction costume pg.8)

Re: Thor & Ironman (Helmet Video pg.5)

I've been using bondo for my pep helmets in the past, but I'm going to give the joint compound a try. I can't seem to get the bondo as smooth as the other members here on the forum, and I've worked my arse off trying to.

Thanks for the info, MJ. A true inspiration.

MightyJohn,
Are you talking about DupliColor GM Dark Cherry Met 047-2597-8?

Just bought a can of this, but can't seem to make my mind whether this or Ford Toreador Red Met. would be better.

Mmm

Nice work on that chest plate John! I did not know you had more pics

Thanks...Great Unibeam!
I didn't want to plaster your thread with a ton of pictures:lol

Yea, Joint compound is hard enough to get smooth. I'm amazed at how they can do it with Bondo, too. Truely dedicated people.

The brand name I used was Dupli-color, but I think that is the number.

I'll give the Ford Toreador Red Met a try on my next piece and see how it pans out. Thanks.

Re: Thor & Ironman (Retro-fit Unibeam pg.7)

So here is what I did to retro-fit the Surreal Studios/TheRealStark Unibeam into my suit.

First, I wrapped a 3 or 4 inch band of card stock around the Unibeam for an accurate match. I then added 2 layers of Fiberglass Mat.

Then I cut out the old hole using a 4" diameter coring drill bit (home Depot). The new 4" hole is a little larger than the new Unibeam holder, which gave me room to adjust the holder into the center of the chest. I used shims and tape to hold it in place.

I then Fiberglassed the holder in place.

Once it set, I proceeded as normal to reshape the opening. This Unibeam is so awesome, it inspired me to add more detail to the chest.

Hope this helps. This retro-fit took more 'dry-time' then phyical labour. Completely worth it!!

Re: Thor Helmet

Woot! I did get some Ironman stuff done this weekend...While I was waiting for the thor helmet to dry.

Thanks. A long way off thought.

First coat of smoothing. Gonna need 2 or 3 more layers. It's a fuzzy picture, but its just the first coat, anyway:lol.

What coating did you use?

Great work John, this is very simular to the way the unibeam fits into my chest piece, slides into a pipe attached to the back of the chest:)

Re: Thor & Ironman (Retro-Fit Unibeam pg.7)

Update on my Ironman Hands.

I'm using Zabana Hand Files (Awesome files!). Palms scaled to .92 and fingers scaled to 1.02.

I made the palms as one piece

I cut the back out, hinged one side with parachute strap and cut a hole in the other side for a strip of velcro.

I connected the handplates together with binding posts and added a few more to hold the knuckle armor.

Re: Thor & Ironman (Retro-Fit Unibeam pg.7)

Hi MightyJohn,
A very incredible work and informative.

Do you use white or blue LED for the eyes?

I never thought to attach the hand plate to knuckle/palm. I thought the plate is attached to forearm. How do you manage to keep the handplate side (upper side) from flipping off?

Thank you.

Thank you.

If you watch the donut shop scene in Ironman 2, you can see that the handplate is attached to the hand not the forearm.
I used white LEDs for my eyes.
I was having some trouble with the handplate flipping over when my arm was down. I was thinking about a spring or some elastic or even a flexable plastic strip to snap it back into place. Then I realized I was over complicating it. I used (2) earth magnets I got from Home Depot and placed them in the upper section of the handplates. Works Fantastic!

Hands look great

I'm getting so many ideas for my own build, a bit delayed at the moment as I need to build my workshop first :)

Re: Thor & Ironman (Hand Assembly pg.7)

Mightyjohn, thanks for all your help... finally got around to automating my helmet with all the advice from your thread.

Re: Thor & Ironman (Hand Assembly pg.7)

Hey Hi guys

just getting with a new question, Im trying to figure out how or what to use as stuffing for the heels of the ironman Boot, any ideas?

I was thinking to use some kind of hard rubber and a little of canned foam to fill some spaces

any idea will be well received

PS: what an awesome job you have done John
