Thor & Ironman (arm construction costume pg.8)

Re: Thor & Ironman (Helmet Video pg.5)

Did you order your servos online? Do you have any details or specs on them. Everything looks amazing btw, wish mine came out half that nice.

Thanks! I got mine online from Hobby King. I used the Tower Pro 9805bb. The specs are on the hobby king website.

A pull-up resistor is a term used for saying, 'put the resistor on the "hot" side of the switch. So, a pull-up resistor is just a normal resistor.

I thought this observation would be of some good use. I suck at using smooth cast, I can never get it even or perfect. So I asked the sculptor at the sculpt supply store, he told me of this product called Shell Shock by smooth on. It is a Poly Urethane Plastic like smooth cast however its viscosity is thicker and allows you to brush it on evenly instead of moving the mold around to get, or in my case try, an even coat with smooth cast. I have to say It came out FLAWLESS compared to my smooth cast attempts.

Pros:
- Requires less material to get an even coat all over
- 2 layers are more than enough to get you a strong cast
- You waste less excess of materials i.e. No dripping or leaking like SC
- Once curing begins you can press it in with your fingers (gloved) to get tiny and cramped places in molds.
- Works very well with Fiberglass Matt or Mesh for extra strength
- Costs pretty much the same as smooth cast ($5 more)

Cons;
- 3 minute working time SOLID VERY QUICK
- Has to be mixed in small amounts due to quick curing
- Uses a 1:4 mix ratio instead of 1:1 like SC
- First layer is VERY fragile and can crack if miss handled before next layer.

Note: I used a fiber glass mat on top of the first layer and it gave it incredible strength compared to my first attempt with out the mat

Hope this was a good observation for you guys.

Mighty John you rock!

Re: Thor & Ironman (Helmet Video pg.5)

What do use use to coat and smooth the project with? I always get stuck at this stage and ruin projects.

Are you talking about final paint or what to do after pep and fiberglass?

Paint: I use an automotive primer (grey) then several layers of automotive paint.

After Fiberglass: I use layers of joint compound and sand with 320 grit sandpaper to smooth the helmet.

Thank you sir! Got my hinges installed in my helmet (took me like 16 hours!) a few weeks ago and I think they're ready for the electronics now.

Yea, the first time is a doozy! But it's better to take your time and get them right, then to fly through it and have them not work properly. I've installed 3 sets now, and I still can't get them done in under 8 hours!:lol
Can't wait to see yours in action, too!!

where can one pick up hinges for the helmets?

I believe aron42486 answered this for you

Right here Justin: http://www.therpf.com/f13/ironman-helmet-hinge-installation-guide-118736/

Check it out and just PM MightyJohn if you are interested in purchasing the guide

Thanks for the help, aron42486!!

thanks man! :cool
hi mizuno! thanks! :cool
yes i use the same method use john,I just changed the location of the servo, John has put them behind the head, and I placed them on the forehead. :)

I don't understand. To me, the forehead would be on the faceplate. Is that so, or did you mount them in the top of the dome. Did you use the 20kg servos or did you go smaller?

Great information and your project is super. Thanks.

Thank you. It's been a fun project.

Update:
I picked up my '30 pack' order of laser cut hinges today. I ordered them to replace my 3mm Sintra hinges, so they are thicker then they need to be. With a set of pliers, I bent them to fit my helmet just fine. I just swapped out my old Sintra hinges (verson 1.1) for the new ones. They work beautiful and no way of breaking!!

Re: Thor & Ironman (Helmet Video pg.5)

I built an eye frame for my first "standard size" helmet, today. So, now they both have eye frames. I also built a servo controller housing for the pololu. I made it so you can plug your helmet into a USB without removing any parts. They are both being molded right now. I'll get some pics up once I cast them.
