Thor & Ironman (arm construction costume pg.8)

Re: Thor & Ironman (Helmet Video pg.5)

I know I posted the wiring diagram of how I did the eyes, but here is a photo of the actual wiring (prior to covering). I added quick release connectors so you can remove the eye assembly for eye maintanence or painting the helmet.

Re: Thor & Ironman (Helmet Video pg.5)

I am amazed at this build. I introduced myself to propping a couple of years ago by doing some Ghostbusters proton pack replicas and wanted to set my sights on IM this year... the wealth of knowledge in this thread alone is astounding. Thanks to everyone that has contributed here, because this is absolutely one of the best builds I've seen in the time I've spent viewing various projects on here. Kudos gentlemen! You've earned it!

I appreciate your support!! Thank you.

I was asked how my wiring looks on the servo system, so I took a few pics. Please note the batteries have not been properly connected. The reason was that I was going to use the rechargable battery, but it was not charged yet. So, I used the AA's for a temp power supply.

here is the wiring I used to power the servos:

Here is the wiring I used for the button. Notice the quick connects I used so, if you wire the button into your suit, you can remove the helmet. I had to rewire the quick connects after the photo was taken. They need to be staggered...because if they touch, it will open/close the helmet. The small wiring is for powering the controller. 6v wasn't enough power, so I tapped into the 9v battery I use for the eyes.

Here is all of it together:

And here is the system with the controller box. All ready to be installed...

And I can't forget my current helmet progress...

MightyJohn - Do you have any circuit diagrams for how you set up everything for the servos/controller/power/switch?

All the Diagrams are here:
Pololu - 7. Wiring Examples

I have 2 main power switches. 1 for the lights & controller and 1 for the servos. I did this because 6v is enough power to run the servos, but not enough power to run the controller (the servos will rotate randomly). So, I spliced the contoller power into the 9v power I use for the eyes.

My first helmet has a switch for the whole servo system and another switch for the eyes (this works if you use a 7.5v battery for the servo system).

Re: Thor & Ironman (Helmet Video pg.5)

I see...

So basically the 9v power supply used for the eyes is taped into vin and ground on the board, correct?

Then you have a separate power supply plugged into "servo power" while the servos are connected to channel 0 and 1.

I'm having trouble seeing how you connected the push button though? Maybe I just can't see the connection in the pictures, but it doesn't look the same as the pololu documentation.

Yes. 9V Taped into vin and ground.

"servo power" is actually "channel power". You can hook up the button to any channel. You just have to change that channel to "input". If you use the script I used: I put the button on channel 0 and the servos on 1 and 2. So, I Changed channel 0 in "input".

Ah interesting... thanks this helps.

Mighty - I had an epic fail when molding my helmet. How did you prep your pieces for mold? My mothermold is not holding the jacket mold in place, even with reg keys existing. How did you prep your pieces for mold?

Sorry, I was out this weekend with the flu.

Sounds like it could be a few things.
1. The jacket mold isn't thick enough. The mothermold is for stoping the jacket mold from moving/shifting. It's not for supporting. I use (5) layers. (2) detail layers (1) thi-vex layer (1) thi-vex layer w/ keys (1) smoothing layer + (1) extra smoothing layer (if required)

2. Do the edges of the mothermold wrap around the jacket mold? This will help hold the jacket in place.

Thats about the extent of help I can give you.

Re: Thor & Ironman (Helmet Video pg.5)

Maybe my issue is that the mothermold doesn't wrap around the jacket. Thanks for the tips.

How did you actually prep the pieces for mold? There really isn't a lip for me to put more silicon, hence no mother mold wrapping around the edges of the jacket mold. I've been told to use either modeling clay, or stuffed plastic bags but I can't visualize how I should do so with the 4 pieces.

Re: Thor & Ironman (Helmet Video pg.5)

I retro fit Surreal Studio/TheRealStark Unibeam into my suit. I'll post the Retro Fit construction pictures On Tuesday (I left them at the office).

Your Iron man pieces have really inspired me to try and make my own suit as amazing as yours. Really nice work :D
