Thanks. I'm still having a little trouble keeping the eyes powered. so, I'm re-wiring the eyes (again). I'm going to use indiefilmgeek's way of making the connection (magnets). And I had to move/rewire the switch to acommodate the servo system wiring. I also need to re-wiring the servo system so it all fits inside the helmet (I was using a USB connect before).
Plus, I want to do a quick re-paint job, too.:lol

I hope, the lack of questions means that I'm explaining myself well enough that people get an understanding of what I'm doing:confused.
I resently got an E-mail about how to install the servo system. I wanted to share my response, since it is a frequent question.

Response:
Get your hinges up and running smoothly before you start thinking about servos. The smoother/the better if you want to run them with servos. If you install a pivot point wrong, fix it; Don’t try to ‘just deal with It’…it will snowball on you. It takes me about 6 to 8 hours to install a set of hinges, so be patient.

For the cables in the video, I used Bicycle brake cables. However, I did not use them when I attached my servos. I mounted the servos in the helmet and used metal rods to link the servos arms to the hinges (pictures in the thread).
Every helmet is a little different. I can’t give you exact directions. The length of your servo arms or the metal link rods might need to be longer or shorter, the position of where the servos are mounted in your helmet might vary slightly…etc. Will you have enough room in your helmet for the proper size servos you need? Or will you need to use the cable method? …etc.

This is an expert build, covering various fields, and as much as I’d like to walk you through it, I can’t; there are way too many variables. Do not think you will get this system up and running on your first try. You will need to experiment a little, as I did, to get the right combination.

Let me know when you need some advice. I’ll help when I can. A lot of the info you will need is on my thread. Check it out, and ask questions about the servos there, too. Maybe someone has the same problem, and I can help both of you.

I made a diagram of the servo link I used. Hopefully this will come in handy for a few people:

Please note that the above diagram is for MY helmet. The length of the rods & degrees of rotation will vary from helmet to helmet.
Also note that this servo system is not specific to my hinge system, alone. It works on a hinge system that rotates around a point.

...Hopefully get the video up soon.

Mighty... I've read that the microcontroller might be able to be programmed to turn the LEDs on/off. Maybe the microcontroller you bought has this capability?

I believe the Pololu can use a LED, but the problem is the connection between the faceplate and dome. My controller is in the dome, so when the faceplate is open, there will be a wire connecting the faceplate and dome. I guess I could run the wire on the back side of the hinge. I'll look into it, thanks.

I bought a 7.2v rechargable battery for my servos:lol. Soo...much...power.

CAUTION - to those that want to attempt this build- I'm now afraid the push rods could break free and stab me in the neck :confused:lol

I love the new battery, thou. The servos are WAY stronger now and the speed is much faster. 15kg servos (maybe lower) would easily do for my helmet. I was using 4 AA batteries (6v) before.

Everything has been install inside the helmet..and fully operational!!
I need to finish the padding, but that is nothing. I'll make, and upload a video in a few hours after I get off work.

I brought it into work, to show it off to the coworkers:lol

Very nice John :):thumbsup... though its kinda fast and have a bit of a scary recoil there during opening... I'm sure you'll slow it down a bit...

I like the speed. Now, if I can break the laws of physics to stop that recoil:lol.

Problems:
Faceplate: A body in motion tends to stay in motion
Servos: For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction

Possible solutions (so far):
1. slow the speed
2. Make the helmet tighter on the head
3. make the servos slow down prior to stopping (is this possible?)

Now that the system is up and running, I will have time to work out the details.

Quick question (and probably a dumb one), but did you use 2 servos because of the mask and jaw piece? Or did you have 2 arms (a servo for each) on the mask?

I used a total of (2) servos. (1) for each side of the face. The hinges are designed to work that way:)
