The Wand Company TOS Tricorder is coming!

After a few more prints and tests here are my versions of the “center” and “right” compartment dividers. These are companions to the “left” divider I provided in post #5070 of this forum thread. I would advise starting with that post, .stls, and information (which I will not repeat here.) I started this project as a basis for modifications I wanted to make to the lower tricorder compartment. But I believe they may have some value of their own.

Before using my dividers, I would recommend watching the installation video provided by TWC and inserting the TWC supplied dividers. This way you will know what to do and how things are “supposed” to work. Whatever combination of dividers you use – carefully examine all edges which will contact your props. This includes the front and back edges of the dividers, and the cradles of the Medical Scanner dividers. 3D printing can leave rough surfaces or threads which might scratch the surfaces of your props. I did not have that problem with any of my prints – but I want to provide the best advice I can. The original TWC dividers are ABS plastic. I had originally planned to use the same, but ABS is a harder plastic which is more likely to cause the type of damage some members have reported. I recommend PLA as these parts do not need the added strength nor the post-print processing which can produce the improved surface quality ABS can provide.

As always I welcome all comments and criticism, so I can make improvements for future versions or future designs.

I noticed you, me and others from this thread are on the 2025 run for the science scanner. Once you receive yours, where you going to design and create 3D print dividers/ribbed cradles stl’s ….for the lower compartment of the Wand tricorder to accommodate the dimensions of the science scanner? If not…what’s that as a possibility?

FYI ……if you live in the U.S., your local city and county libraries should have first-come-first-serve 3D printers you can operate and use for free, but at the minimal cost of the filament weight (total in grams) used from their supplies. They don’t typically let you use your own filament. But they keep many colors on hand ….black is pretty much standard for sure. Call ahead for availability. Take your STL’s on your own USB thumb drive…They will help you, if you’ve never used a 3D printer. It’s not rocket science ;)

I got in on the July 02 Amazon orders. Received notice today, July 15, that it has shipped and I should expect it on Monday, July 21. It's going from Fresno, California to Pennsylvania, so the regional hub idea doesn't seem to be in play.
My Tricorder was delivered via UPS, as expected. Gotta wait until tonight to play around with it, though. Feels like Christmas morning.

Yes! That's where I got the .stl's I needed. Glad you found it!

For the record, my Tric is now outfitted with 3 Center Dividers.

Since smithjohn invites improvements…even his own, for his designs….I’m going to assume, once he has the science scanner in hand…..he may improve on his previous dividers design ;)

Amazon has FINALLY shipped my Tricorder. They say it should be here Friday.

Congrats Tricorder.gif

I have bad feeling about this… I just checked Amazon US. They don’t list the Tricorder as ‘Currently Unavailable’ anymore. Which seems to be what they list if they’re selling an item but it isn’t currently in stock. All they have is a buying option that links to a scalper selling it for $850 dollars.
Hope that doesn’t mean they’ve stopped restocking and selling it already.

I get it now. The reason Amazon didn’t list it as ‘Currently Unavailable’ is because technically it was available. There was the one that was available by the scalper. Someone must have bought it at $850 so that now it’s back to being listed as Currently Unavailable on Amazon.

A stroll through memory lane….

From the Goooog

……”Evidently, it seems that the two Wah Chang "hero" tricorders were frequently disassembled while on the Desilu soundstages and re-constructed with new parts to enhance their appearance.

And now, the hero TOS Tricorder”....

Wand definitely did some improvements….. :)

Hello, first time poster but wanted to tap the hive mind. Does anyone else have an issue with the Moire disk hanging on rotation? Mine consistently stutters at the 2-3 o'clock position and makes a grinding noise around that area. In looking at other photos online, it also appears that my disk's appearence is slightly different - perhaps upside down?

I just received my Tricorder last evening. It is definitely a beauty. After charging it for the requisite time (and confirming that the charge is listed as 100%), I played around with it a bit. Like most, the scanner on mine has the repeating click. But, like boatman here, my Moire disk is having issues. While (so far as I could hear), it didn't make a grinding noise, the Moire indeed stutters. I think boatman may be correct about his being "upside down", since my stuttering occurs around the 7 o'clock position. In his, the 2 position is around where the star shape is sort of hitting - as the 7 position is where my star shape is hitting. But I do have one other fundamental difference from his: not only does my Moire stutter there but, randomly, it also just freezes in place. Sometimes - in a few moments or a few minutes - it will randomly resume on its own (continuing with the stutter). Other times I have to go into settings and "lock" it, then "automatic" it, and it resumes (again continuing with the stutter). Other times I just have to close the lid and wait for the Tricorder to power down after 15 minutes. Then, if I turn it on again, it resumes its "automatic" mode (with the same stutter).

If boatman315 is reading this, did you report your problem to TWC as others here suggested? If so, what was the result? If not, why not? Did the problem go away?

I'll be sending an email to TWC's Customer Service to report the issue. But I wanted to know if anyone else here has run across this issue (or if its been reported on the FB page or something)?

EDIT:

PS: I find that the Diamond Select Type 1 Phaser fits perfectly in the bottom container in the Tricorder. I think its nice to have a backup weapon tuck away somewhere, just in case. ;)

In answer to an earlier question, yes, when I get the Scientic Scanner I will be looking to produce new dividers if that is necessary. Without one in-hand, and no dimensions from anyone else, I am not sure of the size required. After making several different dividers and lower compartment inserts, I have a good handle on the outside dimensions and tab placement - all that will be needed is the diameter of the scanner itself. There was some speculation that the constant diameter of the Science Scanner was the same size as larger diameter of the Medical Scanner. If that is the case then using three, or perhaps only two, of my "Right" dividers "may" work. I can not verify until mine is delivered. I made my models to crandle the Medical Scanner "snuggly" so it would not fall out even upside down but still not be so tight it would scratch anyone's prop. I hope that is the case. I have not really heard any direct feedback from people who have used the models.

Curious….if your not the person on Thingverse mentioned above…..his version of the right divider he calls Grip End perhaps you can open his file and just do a comparison dimensionally to see if the rib/cradle arc is the same as yours or not. You know, a designer’s analysis ;)

From Thingverse…..

As some might guess from my use of Design123 as my modeling tool, I have been playing around with CAD for a while. I do have two Prusa printers which I built from their kits and have been very satisified with the models I have been able to produce. I am the first to admit I do not have the talent to create "new" designs - but I am more than happy to steal other peoples designs - like the TWC dividers - and put my own spin on them.

Hey - I meant to ask you when you originally posted about it, but I got side-tracked and forgot. Where did you get your acrylic case (and what is its particular style/type/size whatever - if there are multiple sizes offered by its manufacturer)?
This is the case I bought from Amazon. I flipped the door so it opens up, I didn’t like the molded handle at the top. Some assembly is required but it’s easy and only took a few minutes.

I have several types of collections……..the worst thing about some, is dusting them…..especially action figures and diecast cars and diecast planes are the worst.

Did you try using the manual overide to move the moire back and forth in the area that it’s hanging up in?

Saw your post on the Blog, I hope Chris replies.
