The Wand Company TOS Tricorder is coming!

Thanks, BTW for any potential hackers out there. In the Wanda blog one person had a fatal error on his tricorder and he lists the error. Of interest, the error listed “ASSERTION FAILED! – FILE: TRICORDER.CPP, LINE: 215”
So that would indicate that the source code is written in C++.

At your own risk and curiosity…for the last 2 screens….did you attempt to change the state of the EMPTY fields with the buttons and/or jog button to see if that could be a secondary enabler beyond the card insertion state change of INSERTED on the engineering screen? And by doing so …the word EMPTY might change to a different word, perhaps ENABLED etc…

(It’s Zzzzz for PST)

For what it is worth to tricorder hackers. I inserted an SD card loaded with a simple Bash Shell Script to ECHO "Hello World". There was no effect on power up, or factory reset. I then went into SERVICE and tried USB UPDATE. The was a delay, a display of all red LEDs. Nothing. After a ~30 second delay - all WHITE LEDs, Cycle of BLUE LEDs, ending with all BLUE LEDs. Return to Start Up Screen. During the 30 second delay the Buttons seem unresponsive.

Yeah, I've also had that response when trying the USB update--apparently to get anything it actually has to be connected to a computer.

An assertion is usually thrown from testing software. Possibly a C++ unit test.

Verbatim……from the TWC blog

So are we, it’s taking way to long!

We initially put an SD card into the electronic design (at an early stage) with the intention of having a repository for large files such as animations or videos. The main issue was development time. However, it was too late in the project to remove the SD card, due to the tooling already having been made and the electronic circuit having been finalised, we left it in there with the thought that we might update the software at some stage in the future to enable the SD card functioin and thus unlock some new features. We are busy right now, so that is a way off, and we have no plans right now to enable its function.”

Imo…it’s up to the hacker squad….”way off” could be another 5 year mission ;)

Does “unlock some new features” mean they are already programmed into the Tricorder? Hmmm

Another q&a from the TWC blog……

“Chris, I’m excited to learn how software updates will work. If USB is power-only, maybe a downloadable patch transferred to an SD card?

The software will be delivered through the USB connection which is power and data.”

Seems to me…the hackers way in, is through the USB-C and not the SD card slot (maybe ;) )

One more….from the blog…some different wording…

“Chris Barnardo, Can you tell us about the SD card slot, it’s purpose. Also, will the USB cable be used for software upgrades in the future. I’d like to see items from the Federation Handbook added to the Tricorder, especially the instructions on building the Communicator.

lots has been said about it already. It was in the earliest designs as a way to add storage, but as the design progressed the additional software to manage the SD card was beyond the scope of the project if we were going to deliver it any time soon. By then it was too late to remove the SD card from the mechanical design. There is a chance that we will enable it in the future. Yes the USB socket will be used for upgrades or patch fixes as and when we can do them or the Tricorder needs them. We are very unlikely to include material from the Federation Handbook, as that is not considered canon. “

…..”In the future” seems like a long way off ….given they are working on other tasks.

If TWC is too busy…..C.B. should give up the keys to be able to port into the Tricorder and crowd source further software and development from the community ….…imo

Do you recall where, with a link?

For what it’s worth…..from the gooooog..

Although never mentioned by name on "Next Generation," the computer graphical interface was called LCARS. This term is taken from many, many extant expanded universe texts, most notably Rick Sternbach and Michael Okuda's 1991 sourcebook "Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual," a must-own for deep-cut Trekkies. According to that book, LCARS stands for "Library Computer Access/Retrieval System."

LCARS wasn't an obscure detail. It was the basic design of all starships on "Star Trek" from 1987 through 2001 before later being brought back for some of the newer "Star Trek" shows in the '2000’s.

That’s it for LCARS origination…..Back to STTOS Tricorder’s :)

I have mine connected to my PC right meow. When I go to settings/service/usb update my lights go green instead of red, and my computer makes the sound that I just plugged something in. On my PC in device manager under ports, it shows a new device connected and "is working properly". after 34 seconds it auto-disconnects and the tricorder reboots.

also hi im new here
