The Wand Company TOS Tricorder is coming!

Let's see. The guy from TNG found a time ship, went to TNG, gathered all kinds of tech objects, and was going to travel home to the past and claim he invented all those tech items. Looks like this Tricorder is from a Universe where he succeeded. So he invented a TOS tricorder with LCARS.

Hmmmm ….a horrible hinge……..I’m not liking the gray color plastic, it doesn’t match….and another thing….. but wait, there’s one more thing…….(nitpicking (Columbo) is all I do :) )

I inserted a micro SD card into the slot on the head unit. The Tricorder does recognize that a micro SD card is inserted. Unfortunately that’s all it does. I put 3 pics on the sd in 320x240 size to match the screen resolution and had .jpg, .bmp & .png hoping it recognize one of the file formats. The sd card was formatted in fat32. Kind of hoped it maybe show up on the archive page but they didn’t.
Here’s 2 pics with sd card inserted and 1 with the blank reinserted

Thanks for being the BRAVE soul to try…..we (or I) had to know…..it’s a start…..release the hackers! (I recall someone saying software might be being worked on already….m-a-y-b-e)

In the last two pics….it says EMPTY…..however…the backgrounds are different colors…that might mean something ( those are sometimes known as state changes.)

It’s interesting that the SD card put it into the engineering drive.

Don’t give up your day job. An audience would need to be extremely drunk to even snicker at your routine.
Getting a bit personal are you? You know how that’s frowned upon :)

Don’t worry, I’ve been screen capturing ;)

A few more and you’ll have to go see the principal :)

Btw…I’m retired…I do whatever I want ;)

Thanks, BTW for any potential hackers out there. In the Wanda blog one person had a fatal error on his tricorder and he lists the error. Of interest, the error listed “ASSERTION FAILED! – FILE: TRICORDER.CPP, LINE: 215”
So that would indicate that the source code is written in C++.

And potentially software bugs just now being discovered……hmmmm

LCARS SYSTEM is what I put on there under the Name option as I figured all federation starships had lcars system computers of some description from the get go.

Relax guys, wand didn't put that in so hold the emails to Chris

That's the name I put on there. I was under the impression that all federation starship computers were Lcars from the go and only mentioned in TNG

I read what your saying…but wouldn’t the validity in the providence and precedence be, of LCARS being mentioned elsewhere in other Star Trek material throughout the decades prior than the next generation. Not solely when the next generation came into being?

While the term ’LCARS’ was first used in TNG to name the Enterprise's OS is there anything in Star Trek canon that says that the ‘LCARS’ system wasn’t the name of the OS the TOS Enterprise used, it just wasn’t ever named in the original series? ‘Library Computer Access/Retrieval System’ is a relatively generic description that can easily apply to the computer systems from both eras.
That's why I put it on there, thought it looked good.
RPF gone and burst my bubble :p

Alsooooooo just to spread the choas (hehe) diamond select's geological tricorder had voice functions meant to be the ships computer and one of them said "Library Computer" . So only 3 words off LCARS haha!
I know it was a toy but just saying :)

Just a note on the SD card insertion. I expect inserting a card is not enough. I have not had the time to research the possibility, but normally a computer Basic Input Output System (BIOS) will perform a program load from a sequence of "bootstrap" devices. For example my laptop normally boots from my hard drive, but I can alter the sequence to first look at a USB drive, then an optical drive, and only then the hard drive. If there is nothing in the USB slot - it is skipped and the program looks at the next device. I can set that sequence as I wish. This happen not when I insert a USB, but only when I power up. Alternatively - if it was my design - I would set it to cycle only when I did a factory reset - since that is when I would WANT to make program changes. Then you will need an executable on the boot device to communication with the ARM processor. I will be pursuing this but I cannot devote the time to it now.

In order to make room for my Scanning Quark Spectrometer in the upper compartment of my Geological Tricorder, I need to relocate the data disks to the lower compartment. With the Sample Rack I will be limited to only six data disks.

With the sensor switches I had on hand the data disks have the same click-to-eject mechanism but the throw is only about 1 mm. A search for better switches will be necessary. In the second photo you can see there is only a slight elevation.

Spectrometers are getting really small these days….this one measures and weighs……Dimensions: 89.0 mm x 63.5 mm x 31.3 mm……Weight: 275 g

For those who want to do more research on hacking the tricorder, the ARM processor will probably be looking to execute a Linux Shell script. This is a text file of commands that the operating system's Shell command interpreter executes. For the Windows world this is like a .bat (Batch) file. But you need to know the specific shell being used – like Bash or KornShell. The first line of a shell script, known as the shebang, specifies the interpreter to use. For example for a Bash script the first line would be - #!/bin/bash. If the interpreter specified in the shebang is not found, you're likely to encounter a "bad interpreter" error. But I do not know how the tricorder will report this. If you get something on the display - then we are on the right track.
