The Wand Company TOS Tricorder is coming!

You might. At 37892, you have less than 4,000 people ahead of you.
Yeah, and the boxed tricorders aren't that big--they can probably load a lot of them on each cargo flight, but there's not telling how many flights before they switch to shipping, or whether the shipping starts right away as well. It would be interesting to know how big each wave is going to be, but I doubt they'd disclose that, since it's probably competition-sensitive.

I just saw on Facebook that the Sale on Amazon won't be restricted to pre-orders. Anyone and everyone can swoop in and buy them. Reseller's scalpers, hoarders.

I've been following this for years, counting the days until I could pre-order and be one of the first ones to have a complete Wand Landing Party set, a reward for being such a die hard fan. Now all the sudden I feel like there is a chance I might not even get one. I can see it now, as soon as it becomes available, sold out waiting for restocking, OH! it's sold out again, better luck next time! You might have to camp out at your computer desk and keep trying and trying. This way NO ONE is assured of getting one.

OK, so it turns out I'm about to splash a generous helping of egg on my face.

My previous post about what we can expect to pay in tariffs for the tricorder, like the information I got from Grok before I looked up the statute, is wildly, hilariously wrong.

My main mistake was failing to notice that there were not one, but two Executive Orders on tariffs, and the second one (the one I missed) is specific to Chinese-origin goods.

And the second one is where all the action is regarding the tricorder.

Reed Smith LLP, a big, white-shoe law firm, have on their website a "Trade Compliance Resource Hub." And unlike me, these guys do practice trade law.

According to Reed Smith:

First, the tariff on the tricorder will turn on country of origin, not where it's being shipped from. So that is, unfortunately, China. Second, the de minimis exemption for Chinese-origin goods isn't subject to when the Commerce Dept. can institute collection methods (like it says in the first EO), but rather a hard date of May 2, 2025 (which is in the second EO). And third, just how much we pay will turn on the shipping method!

Here's the relevant bit from the Reed Smith website:

End of the de minimis exemption for Chinese-origin goods

Effective at 12:01 a.m. (ET) on May 2, 2025, the United States will end the duty-free de minimisexemption for imports of Chinese-origin goods (including goods originating in Hong Kong). The de minimis exemption typically applies to goods imported by one person on one day having a fair retail value not exceeding $800.

For goods valued at or under $800 that would otherwise qualify for the de minimis exemption, the duty rates will vary depending on the shipping method:
  • For goods sent through means other than the international postal network, all applicable duties and tariffs will be due upon import. [I think this means FedEx, DHL, Amazon Prime, etc.]
  • For goods sent through the international post network, the import will be subject to duties of 30% ad valorem or $25 per item (at the transportation carrier’s discretion) in lieu of any other duties, including those previously imposed by executive order. The per item dollar amount will increase to $50 per item on June 1, 2025....

And here's the wrinkle: I can't tell from the Amazon UK website how they ship to the US!

And here's the other wrinkle: The tariffs don't apply to goods that get shipped out from China before the deadline!

Exceptions

The new reciprocal tariffs will not apply in the following circumstances:
  • Goods loaded onto a vessel at the port of loading and in transit on the final mode of transit before the reciprocal tariffs take effect will not be subject to the baseline or country-specific ad valorem tariffs (as applicable).

So, all of this could be irrelevant for any of the tricorders TWC manages to ship out of China before May 2! And that could be a lot, or even all of the first run!

Confused yet? Yeah, me too. Oy.

Has this person been reliable in the past? Because I can't help but notice that this is second-hand information, and thus may not even be true. This person could be trolling.

Apart from that, my skepticism stems from this being the exact opposite of what TWC said in their email to people who registered. If this is true, it would mean that either Wand was hiding the ball in their first email and has suddenly decided to come out with it, or their thinking has radically changed in the last week or two.

So I'll wait until I see direct confirmation from TWC that this is the case.

I gotta say that I feel a bit betrayed by TWC over this. I was expecting to order directly from them having "pre-registered" my interest a couple years ago... Throwing it on Amazon is like the wild west...

Don't panic. I am sure they are anticipating the huge demand. And if we miss the first run there will be subsequent runs following.

It's dark times but don't let that cloud our optimism for a great product that's coming our way. TWC could be charging 2x or 3x the price for this product! Especially for what it does! The electronics are amazing!

IF THIS WAS MADE BY FACTORY ENTERTAINMENT THE PRICE WOULD BE 2X OR 3X THE PRICE EASY! Just look at their SNW replicas they are offering!

Seems well known on the Wand Facebook group

I second that. And I reiterate my skepticism about the post--it's second-hand, and it's the opposite of what they told us last Friday.

Oh it hasn't dampened my enthusiasm for getting one or two... But it does give me a bit of concern about the free-for-all that comes on pre-order day. TWC should reserve at least 1 per pre-order interest registration, for the first week. maybe send out a special email with a link to the reserved tricorders. Give us that have literally been waiting years a shot at it first. I don't know if Amazon does that, or can do that, but it seems way more fair than hope you refresh your browser on the right second to get in on it. Its just disappointing. I mean maybe it will be 100% fine, but if its not I'm going to be mightily upset by it.

Thought I saw a post somewhere where they indicated a link would be sent to our E-Mails.

Yeah, but even though I've registered I am spotty in getting their emails. Not sure exactly why... usually I find out from one forum or another that I frequent that they've posted a new update.

That was in last Friday's email to people who were registered.

They've said elsewhere that if you registered, they have you, and I think they said if you have multiple registrations they'll queue you from the earliest one. Why not just go re-register on the website and see if that helps?

Can't blame you. I might even do that. Although my US account credentials worked on Amazon UK, so I'm not sure setting up a new account is necessary.
My credentials worked but had to add a payment method to the UK Amazon site.
